The Balearic Government continues its commitment to dialogue between the councils of Ibiza and Mallorca to find a solution to the transfer of waste between islands.
The intention of the Consell de Ibiza is to promote a pilot plan to assess the feasibility of transporting waste by boat to the Son Reus incinerator, but the position of the Consell de Mallorca remains firm in its refusal.
A conflict without progress
Mallorca’s Minister of the Environment, Pedro Bestard, has reiterated on several occasions that the island will not accept to treat waste from Ibiza, making it clear in the plenary session of the Consell mallorquín that there is no room for negotiation.
However, the regional government insists that the waste problem in Ibiza requires attention and that the option of Mallorca should not be ruled out definitively.
“What the Government would like is to reach a consensus because we are aware that there is a serious waste problem in Ibiza and that the landfill has an expiration date,” said the spokesman and vice president of the Government, Antoni Costa.
From the Consell de Ibiza, its president, Vicent Marí, has assured that he will continue trying to convince his Mallorcan counterparts. “Until the door is completely closed, we must continue working so that we can experiment with this option,” he said, maintaining his hope of reaching an agreement.
The Government’s position
The Balearic Government avoids positioning itself in favor of either side and is committed to dialogue between the councils. “We cannot look the other way,” said Costa, although he made it clear that the responsibility lies mainly with the Consell de Ibiza.
The Executive spokesman expressed his hope that a consensus could be reached in a “reasonable time” and urged both parties to continue negotiations.
However, so far, the Consell de Mallorca remains firm in its position, which leaves the future of the pilot plan proposed by Ibiza up in the air.
