The U.S. sports world was shocked Thursday after learning of the death of Marshawn Kneeland, a Dallas Cowboys player, at the age of 24. The news was confirmed by the franchise itself, which lamented “a tragic loss” and sent its condolences to the young athlete’s family.
Kneeland, who had recently caught his first NFL touchdown, was considered one of the most promising defensive players on the Texans’ roster. His sudden death leaves a deep void in the organization and in the sports community that followed his ascending career.
What Happened to Marshawn Kneeland
The Frisco (Texas) Police Department confirmed that the player was found dead in the early hours of this November 6, following a vehicle chase that occurred hours earlier. According to the official report, the officers responded to a report of a car that had evaded the authorities and ended up crashing on the Dallas Parkway, near Warren Parkway.
Upon arrival, Kneeland had fled the vehicle and a search operation was initiated with drones and several support units. Shortly thereafter, police received information that the player had expressed suicidal thoughts. He was eventually found dead around 1:30 a.m. with a self-inflicted gunshot wound, local authorities confirmed.
Neither the team nor its representative have offered further details, but the investigation remains open to clarify all the events that occurred that night.
A career on the rise and a life marked by self-improvement

Marshawn Kneeland had established himself as one of the NFL’s young defensive talents. Born in Grand Rapids, Michigan, he played college soccer at Western Michigan University, where he stood out for his strength and discipline before being selected by the Dallas Cowboys in the 2024 Draft.
During his brief time in the professional league, he played 18 games and was recognized for his positive attitude on and off the field. Just days before his death, he had experienced a special moment: his first touchdown in the NFL, after recovering a blocked punt in a game against the Arizona Cardinals.
Outside the sport, Kneeland faced difficult times. In 2024, he lost his mother, to whom he paid tribute by wearing a necklace with her ashes at every meet, a symbol of the emotional connection that has been with him ever since.
The team’s message and the legacy it leaves behind
Through a statement, the Dallas Cowboys expressed their dismay and described the player’s death as “a tragedy for the entire team family”. His agent, Jonathan Perzley, also shared a message on social media remembering Kneeland as “a young man with an infectious energy, full of dreams and love for soccer.”
His departure has reopened the debate on mental health in professional sports, an increasingly visible issue in the major U.S. leagues. NFL teams and teammates have expressed their grief and support for the player’s family, recalling his commitment, his effort and the passion with which he lived his short but intense career.
