The Consell de Formentera has completed a new phase of coastal cleanup, focused on the removal of five abandoned boats in the areas of Levante and south of the Mola. The operation, carried out by the specialized company Serveis Marítims Eivisub SL, has included the removal of the remains of burned, wrecked and sunken boats, as well as waste such as drums and life jackets. The removed vessels have been transported to the port of Ibiza for further management.
Exhaustive cleaning of the coastline
The five vessels removed showed different states of deterioration: three were burned, one was completely destroyed and another remained sunk on the seabed. According to the Consell de Formentera, the extraction procedure was carried out by sea to ensure safety and avoid additional environmental impacts. In addition to the boats, various associated waste was collected, such as clothing, life jackets and fuel cans. This effort is part of the Consell’s ongoing measures to preserve the coastal environment and ensure safety in these natural areas.
Pending work: one fishing vessel and more vessels on shore
Despite the progress made, the removal of an abandoned fishing vessel in the same area, which has a waterway that complicates its immediate removal, is still pending. Before proceeding, it will be necessary to empty the fuel tanks and ensure that there is no risk of spills that could damage the marine ecosystem. On the other hand, the Consell has informed that it is preparing a new intervention to remove more boats in the Levante area, using machinery from land to facilitate access to stranded vessels in areas of difficult maritime reach.
Emergency hiring in November
This operation is in addition to a previous emergency contract signed with Eivisub in November 2024, through which they committed to remove a total of fifteen vessels. Ten were removed on the first day, while the remaining five have been managed in this second phase, thus concluding the contract with this company.
Coordination with the Government Delegation
In parallel, the Conselleria de Medio Ambiente has held meetings with the Government Delegation to coordinate the removal of boats that remain accumulated in the landfill. These will be transferred to Ibiza for decontamination and destruction, as stipulated in the contract with the company Herbusa.
