The Women’s Office in Ibiza has reached a record 872 women attended so far this year, representing an increase of 27% over 2023, when 687 cases were attended. This growth, according to the coordinator of the service, Tonyi Ferrer, responds to an increase in requests for advice and support from women facing situations of violence or conflicts that could escalate.
Assistance programs and case diversity
This year, the office’s various programs have seen increases in the number of women beneficiaries. In the Program for the Care and Treatment of Women Victims of Gender Violence, 497 women received support, up from 482 in 2023.497 women received support, up from 482 in 2023. The Shelter Home Accommodation Program also showed a slight increase, with 82 women and 49 minors being sheltered, compared to 78 in the previous year. Another program that stands out is the Psychological Care for Sons and Daughters of Victims of Gender Violence Program, which assisted 65 minors in 2024. In addition, the Socio-labor Guidance Program registered a notable growth, from 16 to 63 women assisted.
Profiles of women served and duration of abuse
Most of the women assisted in the gender-based violence program are between 25 and 54 years of age, and the profile of the victims assisted varies both in terms of origin and employment situation. The Office reported that, of the 497 women who suffered some type of abuse, 293 were victims of physical and psychological abuse, while another 130 were victims of psychological abuse. In relation to nationality, 235 of the women were Spanish, while 233 were foreign, with a predominance of South American origin. It was also reported that 131 women have suffered violence for periods of between one and three years, and 88 women have endured abusive situations for more than a decade.
Awareness-raising activities for the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women
With a view to November 25, International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, the Consell de Ibiza has organized activities that include a free film series with titles on the subject, training sessions in the social and legal field, and various awareness-raising activities in schools and centers on the island. The director of the Center for Prevention and Addictive Behaviors of the Consell, Belén Alvite, stressed that the activities will run until December 12 in collaboration with local councils.
