The Spanish Agency for Food Safety and Nutrition (Aesan) has issued an urgent warning after detecting Listeria monocytogenes in several matured blended cheeses made from raw sheep and cow milk distributed in Spain. The alert affects six products of the brands Eroski, Beiardi, Agort and Udabe, all of them with different batches and expiration dates.
The origin of the notification comes from the health authorities of Navarra, which activated the Coordinated System for the Rapid Exchange of Information (SCIRI) upon confirming the presence of the bacterium in samples of these products.

Aesan details that the risk is limited to cheeses made with raw milk, a product that, since it does not undergo pasteurization, presents a greater probability of microbiological contamination. These are the products indicated:

Where have these products been distributed?
According to Aesan, the affected cheeses have been offered for sale mainly in:
-
Basque Country
-
Navarra
-
Castilla-La Mancha
-
Aragon
However, it is not ruled out that they may have reached other autonomous communities due to the possible redistribution among centers and chains.
The information has already been sent to all regional authorities through SCIRI, in order to ensure the immediate withdrawal of the affected lots.
What to do if you have one of these cheeses at home?
Aesan strictly recommends:
1. Do not consume the affected products
In no case should they be ingested, even if they look or smell good.
2. Check for symptoms in case you have consumed them.
Listeriosis can cause:
-
Fever
-
Diarrhea
-
Vomiting
If these symptoms appear, those affected should go to their health center.
3. Special precautions for pregnant women
Pregnant women are one of the groups most at risk. Aesan reminds to consult the guidelines of its pregnancy guide, where it details which foods to avoid due to the risk of Listeria monocytogenes, such as raw milk cheeses, uncooked sausages or refrigerated pâtés.
Listeria monocytogenes: why is it so dangerous?
Listeria is a bacterium capable of surviving even under refrigeration. Its infection can cause serious complications, especially in:
-
Pregnant
-
Mayores
-
Immunosuppressed persons
More severe cases may result in meningitis, septicemia or fetal complications.
A new call for extreme caution
With this alert, Aesan reinforces the key message: products made from raw milk require special vigilance, both on the part of producers and consumers.
While the recalls are being completed, authorities insist that the key is to check the lot, discard affected cheeses and be on the lookout for any symptoms, especially after consumption in recent weeks.
The investigation is still underway to determine the source of the contamination and prevent future incidents.
