Sant Antoni de Portmany will once again become the epicenter of traditional Ibizan gastronomy with the celebration of the XIII edition of the World Rice Competition of Matanzas, which will take place on Saturday, February 7. The contest is part of the program of the festivities of Sant Antoni and is one of the most important events of the festive calendar of the Pitiüses.
The contest maintains its popular and participatory character, and this year incorporates as a novelty cash prizes, in addition to the traditional awards. In addition, the World Rice Contest of Matanzas Junior will be held again, aimed at educational centers of the island.
Opening of the registration period
The City Council of Sant Antoni de Portmany has announced that the registration period to participate in the main competition will open on Monday, January 14, from 9.00 am, in the establishment Es Clot, located in Ample Street, 15. As in previous editions, places are limited and registration must be done in person.
A consolidated and record-breaking competition
Consolidated as one of the most popular gastronomic events in Ibiza, the World Rice Competition of Matanzas brings together every year numerous teams from both the municipality of Sant Antoni and other parts of Ibiza, the Balearic Islands and the Peninsula.
In the last edition, the competition reached a record number of participants, with 150 teams registered.
Cash prizes as the main novelty
As a novelty in this thirteenth edition, the contest will incorporate cash prizes for the best-ranked teams. The first prize will be 750 euros, the second prize will be 500 euros and the third prize will be 250 euros.
These awards are in addition to the traditional prizes, which include a lot of typical products for the first three winners and, in the case of the winning team, a steel sculpture inspired by the matanza rice.

A festive day with multiple activities
In addition to the culinary competition, the day of February 7 will feature a popular rice, musical performances, solidarity actions, animation, ball pagès and the subsequent awards ceremony, reinforcing the festive and community character of the event.
The junior contest is once again committed to young people
As a complement to the main competition, the program includes the third edition of the Matanzas Junior World Rice Competition, aimed at raising funds for study trips. This initiative, incorporated as a novelty in 2024, is aimed at primary and secondary schools on the island.
Teams, consisting of a maximum of 15 students, must be accompanied by adults, whether family members, members of parents’ associations or teachers from the school.
Rules of the World Junior Matanzas Rice Competition
Participants in the junior contest must bring their own ingredients and cooking utensils and cook a minimum of one kilo of rice.
The event will be held on Friday, February 6, starting at 11.00 a.m., in the Plaza de s’Era d’en Manyà.
Prizes will be awarded to the first three winners, with endowments of 750 euros for first place, 500 euros for second place and 250 euros for third place.
