{"id":135058,"date":"2025-11-05T18:50:59","date_gmt":"2025-11-05T17:50:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lavozdeibiza.com\/sin-categorizar\/government-reinforces-ibizas-purification-system-to-protect-its-natural-environment\/"},"modified":"2025-11-05T19:43:46","modified_gmt":"2025-11-05T18:43:46","slug":"government-reinforces-ibizas-purification-system-to-protect-its-natural-environment","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lavozdeibiza.com\/en\/current-news\/government-reinforces-ibizas-purification-system-to-protect-its-natural-environment\/","title":{"rendered":"Government reinforces Ibiza&#8217;s purification system to protect its natural environment"},"content":{"rendered":"<p data-start=\"349\" data-end=\"592\">The central government has approved an investment of <strong data-start=\"398\" data-end=\"501\">20 million euros to renovate water infrastructures and refurbish three wastewater treatment plants in the Balearic Islands<\/strong>, including the <strong data-start=\"518\" data-end=\"579\">wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) of Sa Coma<\/strong>, in Ibiza.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li data-start=\"349\" data-end=\"592\">\n<h4><a href=\"https:\/\/lavozdeibiza.com\/actualidad\/destacan-una-infraestructura-clave-para-tratar-aguas-residuales-en-ibiza\/\">Key infrastructure&#8221; to treat wastewater in Ibiza highlighted<\/a><\/h4>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"594\" data-end=\"863\">According to the Government Delegation in the Balearic Islands, the <strong data-start=\"656\" data-end=\"680\">Council of Ministers<\/strong> gave the green light this Tuesday to a <strong data-start=\"712\" data-end=\"728\">royal decree<\/strong> that regulates the direct concession of this subsidy to the archipelago, with the objective of improving the management of the integral water cycle.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"865\" data-end=\"1257\">In the case of Ibiza, the allocation will allow the <strong data-start=\"907\" data-end=\"983\">installation of a backup system for the central pumping of the Sa Coma WWTP<\/strong>, an essential infrastructure for wastewater treatment on the island. The action seeks to <strong data-start=\"1085\" data-end=\"1186\">guarantee the reliability of the system and avoid incidents in the event of electrical or technical failures<\/strong>, a key aspect on an island with high tourist and seasonal pressure.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1259\" data-end=\"1481\">The bulk of the investment will be allocated to the <strong data-start=\"1303\" data-end=\"1374\">reform of the treatment plants of Campos and Muro-Can Picafort (Mallorca)<\/strong> and <strong data-start=\"1380\" data-end=\"1405\">Es Mercadal (Menorca)<\/strong>, as well as the <strong data-start=\"1420\" data-end=\"1480\">renovation of infrastructures in Sa Marineta (Mallorca)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"175\" data-end=\"261\"><strong data-start=\"179\" data-end=\"261\">A strategic facility that already treats more than half of the island&#8217;s water flow.<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"263\" data-end=\"760\">The Sa Coma wastewater treatment plant, located between Ibiza town and Santa Eul\u00e0ria, was officially inaugurated in 2023 and has become a <strong data-start=\"395\" data-end=\"451\">key infrastructure for the island&#8217;s sanitation<\/strong>, taking on more than 50% of the urban wastewater generated in the municipalities of Ibiza, Santa Eul\u00e0ria and Sant Antoni. The plant, managed by the Balearic Water Agency (Abaqua), <strong data-start=\"638\" data-end=\"698\">largely replaces the old Jes\u00fas treatment plant<\/strong>, now converted into a pumping and pretreatment station.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"762\" data-end=\"1297\">With a capacity to serve a population of more than <strong data-start=\"819\" data-end=\"853\">95,000 equivalent inhabitants<\/strong>, the facility incorporates advanced purification systems that exceed the parameters required by European regulations and allow <strong data-start=\"985\" data-end=\"1054\">the tourist season<\/strong> to be <strong data-start=\"985\" data-end=\"1054\">faced with greater environmental guarantees<\/strong>. Its construction, with an investment of close to <strong data-start=\"1105\" data-end=\"1129\">40 million euros<\/strong>, is considered a leap in quality in water management in Ibiza and a central piece in the new maintenance contract for the island&#8217;s nine treatment plants.<\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"1259\" data-end=\"1481\">Conditions of the game<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"1483\" data-end=\"1748\">The <strong data-start=\"1486\" data-end=\"1551\">Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge<\/strong> will execute this item from the <strong data-start=\"1591\" data-end=\"1628\">General State Budget<\/strong>, while the <strong data-start=\"1646\" data-end=\"1685\">Balearic Government will have two years<\/strong> to develop the actions once the funds have been received.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1750\" data-end=\"2183\">The subsidy, of an exceptional nature, is granted to both <strong data-start=\"1809\" data-end=\"1837\">the Balearic and Canary Islands<\/strong> due to their <strong data-start=\"1850\" data-end=\"1871\">insular condition<\/strong> and the structural difficulties they present in terms of supply and sanitation. It is part of the <strong data-start=\"1979\" data-end=\"2040\">Ministry&#8217;<\/strong>s <strong data-start=\"1979\" data-end=\"2040\">strategic plan for the period 2025-2027<\/strong>, which seeks to move towards the <strong data-start=\"2069\" data-end=\"2105\">good status of water bodies<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"2110\" data-end=\"2131\">water security<\/strong> and <strong data-start=\"2138\" data-end=\"2182\">efficient wastewater treatment<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2185\" data-end=\"2427\">The Government recalls that the scarcity of surface water resources in the archipelagos <strong data-start=\"2277\" data-end=\"2306\">requires specific measures<\/strong> to improve their sanitation and purification systems, in a context of climate change and growing
