{"id":135104,"date":"2025-11-05T20:48:57","date_gmt":"2025-11-05T19:48:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lavozdeibiza.com\/sin-categorizar\/ibizas-challenge-to-become-one-of-europes-first-zero-waste-islands\/"},"modified":"2025-11-05T20:48:57","modified_gmt":"2025-11-05T19:48:57","slug":"ibizas-challenge-to-become-one-of-europes-first-zero-waste-islands","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lavozdeibiza.com\/en\/current-news\/ibizas-challenge-to-become-one-of-europes-first-zero-waste-islands\/","title":{"rendered":"Ibiza&#8217;s challenge: to become one of Europe&#8217;s first &#8220;zero waste&#8221; islands"},"content":{"rendered":"<p data-start=\"670\" data-end=\"1079\">The goal of making the Pitiusas islands a benchmark of sustainability took a new step forward this Wednesday with the celebration of a participatory workshop in the Sa Coma Island Park, where representatives of the Consell d&#8217;Eivissa, the Consell de Formentera, the island&#8217;s municipalities and the Balearic Government met to chart a joint path towards the <strong data-start=\"1054\" data-end=\"1078\">&#8220;zero waste islands&#8221;<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h4><a href=\"https:\/\/lavozdeibiza.com\/actualidad\/gestion-de-la-basura-en-ibiza-el-40-apoya-una-incineradora-pero-segun-donde-se-ubique\/?swcfpc=1\">Garbage management in Ibiza: 40% support an incinerator, but depending on where it is located.<\/a><\/h4>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"1081\" data-end=\"1554\">The meeting, organized by <strong data-start=\"1110\" data-end=\"1167\">Plastic Free: Alianza Residuo Cero Ibiza y Formentera<\/strong> and <strong data-start=\"1170\" data-end=\"1201\">Mission Zero Academy (MiZA)<\/strong>, is part of the project <em data-start=\"1228\" data-end=\"1261\">&#8220;Towards Zero Waste Islands&#8221;,<\/em> promoted by the sustainable innovation laboratory <strong data-start=\"1317\" data-end=\"1325\">(Ma)<\/strong> with the support of <strong data-start=\"1342\" data-end=\"1363\">IbizaPreservation<\/strong> and the <strong data-start=\"1369\" data-end=\"1388\">BeMed Foundation<\/strong>. The conference was aimed at identifying practical solutions to reduce waste at source, promote reuse and improve selective collection. <\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1558\" data-end=\"1919\">&#8220;Zero waste, sooner or later, is going to be the only possible path on islands with limited territories,&#8221; stressed <strong data-start=\"1672\" data-end=\"1687\">Sof\u00eda Ribas<\/strong>, coordinator of the Alliance. &#8220;It makes no sense that 60% of waste ends up in landfill or incinerator. We know that other territories are achieving this; Ibiza and Formentera can also do it if we work collectively.&#8221; <\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"1921\" data-end=\"2182\">In search of strategies<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"1921\" data-end=\"2182\">During the session, facilitated by MiZA experts, local institutions analyzed European success stories and discussed strategies to reduce the use of single-use packaging, prevent food waste and enhance the second-hand market.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2184\" data-end=\"2517\">The director of the European organization, <strong data-start=\"2225\" data-end=\"2246\">Kaisa Karjalainen<\/strong>, highlighted the involvement shown by local administrations: &#8220;The institutions have shown a clear willingness to work on concrete solutions. The challenge is great, but cooperation and prevention are the keys to moving towards a zero waste model&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2519\" data-end=\"2822\">The project also foresees a <strong data-start=\"2547\" data-end=\"2598\">study trip to a European island certified<\/strong> with the Zero Waste seal, with the aim of learning from their experience and adapting their good practices to the Pitiusan context.
