GEN-GOB, the entity that has managed the space for the past four years, has left the property after the City Council of Eivissa confirmed that it <g id=\"gid_1\">will not renew the assignment agreement<\/g> signed in 2021. The environmental organization has published a farewell letter, signed by its president, Joan Carles Palerm, in which he thanks the support received and regrets the loss of one of the few spaces dedicated to environmental education in the Pitiusas.  <\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"937\" data-end=\"1001\">A farewell after the municipal notice of non-renewal<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"1003\" data-end=\"1403\">The closure is the outcome of a decision announced in late August, when the City Council notified GEN-GOB that it would not extend the assignment. With this resolution, the consistory puts an end to the stage in which Can Casals has functioned as the <strong data-start=\"1245\" data-end=\"1274\">headquarters of the environmental group<\/strong>, educational enclave and reference space for workshops, lectures, scientific projects and activities open to the public. <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li data-start=\"1003\" data-end=\"1403\">\n<h5><a href=\"https:\/\/lavozdeibiza.com\/actualidad\/el-gen-gob-se-queda-sin-sede-tras-la-negativa-del-ayuntamiento-de-ibiza-a-renovar-la-cesion-de-can-casals\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">GEN-GOB is left without headquarters after the refusal of the City Council of Ibiza to renew the assignment of Can Casals<\/a><\/h5>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"1405\" data-end=\"1809\">In his letter, sent after Monday&#8217;s closure, Palerm summarizes the impact that the project has had: more than <strong data-start=\"1515\" data-end=\"1536\">5,000 students<\/strong> have passed through its facilities, in addition to schools, neighbors and local entities. The president of GEN-GOB is grateful for the trust of teachers and professors, the neighborhood support and the collaboration of associations that in recent days tried to prevent the eviction. <\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"1811\" data-end=\"1857\">A space rehabilitated with European funds<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"1859\" data-end=\"2219\">Can Casals, located in the neighborhood of Cas Serres, was rehabilitated in 2020 through <strong data-start=\"1941\" data-end=\"1989\">European Rural Development Funds (EAFRD)<\/strong> to recover heritage elements -such as the well and the tanc\u00f3n- and destine the property to cultural and environmental uses. A year later, the City Council signed an agreement with GEN-GOB to revitalize it and open it to the community. <\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2221\" data-end=\"2650\">Since then, the space has hosted courses, workshops, lectures, scientific campaigns, technical meetings and innovative educational proposals, including the <strong data-start=\"2379\" data-end=\"2423\">first environmental escape room in the Balearic Islands<\/strong>, focused on posidonia, which has received 2,800 students. Initiatives such as <strong data-start=\"2521\" data-end=\"2540\">&#8220;Fauna pitiusa&#8221;,<\/strong> a simulated nocturnal experience for schoolchildren, and the program <strong data-start=\"2606\" data-end=\"2649\">&#8220;Vive la naturaleza! Come to Can Casals!&#8221;.<\/strong> <\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2652\" data-end=\"2827\">The GEN-GOB Marine Area has used the facilities as a base for monitoring projects of oceanic posidonia, sea urchin studies or Cystoseira sampling.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_137692\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-137692\" style=\"width: 1280px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-137691\" src=\"https:\/\/lavozdeibiza.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/IMG_0218.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1280\" height=\"1041\" srcset=\"https:\/\/lavozdeibiza.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/IMG_0218.jpg 1280w, https:\/\/lavozdeibiza.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/IMG_0218-300x244.jpg 300w, https:\/\/lavozdeibiza.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/IMG_0218-768x625.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1280px) 100vw, 1280px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-137692\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">This Monday, Can Casals officially closed its doors.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2 data-start=\"2829\" data-end=\"2870\">Concern for the future of space<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"2872\" data-end=\"3308\">The farewell letter also expresses concern about the future of the space. Palerm recalls that the European funds committed the City Council to maintain a <strong data-start=\"3032\" data-end=\"3060\">cultural and environmental use<\/strong>, and hopes that this line is maintained. The president thanks the council for the opportunity to have managed Can Casals, but insists on the need to preserve both the uses and the natural heritage created together with the students and volunteers.  <\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3310\" data-end=\"3485\">&#8220;Today the gardens of Can Casals are full of life,&#8221; says the text, which highlights the recovery of species such as sargantanas, scarce when the group arrived at the space.<\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"3487\" data-end=\"3532\">Change of model: shared municipal use<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"3534\" data-end=\"3815\">As explained by the City Council to GEN-GOB, the non-renewal responds to a change in the management model: <strong data-start=\"3636\" data-end=\"3726\">Can Casals and Can Tomeu will become municipal spaces open to any entity<\/strong> wishing to carry out specific activities, without permanent assignment to a single organization.<\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"3817\" data-end=\"3884\">GEN-GOB seeks headquarters and denounces lack of educational spaces<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"3886\" data-end=\"4220\">From this Monday, GEN-GOB is left without alternative headquarters and will begin the search for a new place to continue its programs. The entity remarks that in the Pitiusas &#8220;there are almost no suitable spaces for educational activities outside the classroom&#8221; and that the loss of Can Casals is a setback in the environmental education offer. <\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4222\" data-end=\"4495\">Numerous entities &#8211; such as the Agrupaci\u00f3n Astron\u00f3mica de Ibiza, Amigos de la Tierra, APAEEF, IbizaPreservation, Sa Real, STEI and various educational centers &#8211; have publicly expressed their support for the environmental group and their recognition of the work carried out during these four years.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4524\" data-end=\"4791\">&#8220;We hope that Can Casals continues to live&#8221;, concludes the farewell letter.
