In Ibiza we have it <\/strong>&#8220;. With that sentence, direct and without nuances, <strong>Juan Miguel Costa, island director of Tourism,<\/strong> opened his speech at the round table <strong data-start=\"895\" data-end=\"963\">&#8220;The importance of nightlife for the economy and tourism&#8221;,<\/strong> held this Monday in Valencia as part of the <strong>International Congress of Nightlife<\/strong>. And he did so by making it clear that, in the midst of the transformation of the tourism model, <strong data-start=\"1125\" data-end=\"1174\">leisure is not a problem: it is an opportunity<\/strong>. <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h4><a href=\"https:\/\/lavozdeibiza.com\/en\/current-news\/leisure-venues-participate-in-more-than-e1-million-in-funding-to-sporting-events\/?swcfpc=1\">&#8220;Leisure venues participate in more than \u20ac1 million in funding to sporting events.&#8221;<\/a><\/h4>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<h4><a href=\"https:\/\/lavozdeibiza.com\/en\/current-news\/vicent-roig-between-the-noise-map-and-the-40-seals-this-summer\/?swcfpc=1\">Vicent Roig, between the noise map and the 40 seals this summer<\/a><\/h4>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"1177\" data-end=\"1677\">Costa defended that the island can take advantage of its enormous global visibility &#8211; &#8220;<strong data-start=\"1277\" data-end=\"1302\">a brutal exposure<\/strong>&#8220;, he remarked- to promote a strategy that goes beyond discos and clubs. &#8220;<strong data-start=\"1396\" data-end=\"1495\">Our great challenge is that all those people who come for leisure discover the other faces of Ibiza<\/strong>: the 75-80% green island, the coves, the culture, the gastronomy, the heritage,&#8221; he said. &#8220;We want leisure to be a <strong data-start=\"1610\" data-end=\"1622\">vehicle<\/strong> to connect with the Ibiza that many still don&#8217;t know.&#8221; <\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"1746\" data-end=\"1829\">Ibiza&#8217;s challenge: transforming the &#8220;party&#8221; label without giving up its strength<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"1831\" data-end=\"2263\">Costa insisted that the island is facing a decisive moment: &#8220;What we want is to gradually <strong data-start=\"1928\" data-end=\"1987\">change the perception of Ibiza only as a place to party<\/strong>&#8220;. The idea is not to hide the identity, but to expand it. If Ibiza attracts millions of people from all over the world every year thanks to its nightlife &#8211; &#8220;<strong data-start=\"2140\" data-end=\"2162\">the best in the world<\/strong>&#8220;, he repeated-, the next step is to <strong data-start=\"2196\" data-end=\"2262\">turn that attention into a bridge to the rest of the destination<\/strong>.  <\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2265\" data-end=\"2444\">The data accompany the speech: <strong data-start=\"2298\" data-end=\"2348\">87% of the island&#8217;s GDP comes from tourism<\/strong> and <strong data-start=\"2351\" data-end=\"2407\">30% is directly linked to nightlife<\/strong>. &#8220;Its weight is overwhelming,&#8221; he acknowledged. <\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"2538\" data-end=\"2590\">Public-private balance: regulating without suffocating<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"2592\" data-end=\"2771\">At one point at the table, Costa left one of the most commented phrases of the day: &#8220;I am very proud of my work,&#8221; he said.<strong data-start=\"2680\" data-end=\"2769\">Many times our function is to be as unobtrusive as possible. Do not put obstacles in the wheel <\/strong>&#8220;.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2773\" data-end=\"3116\">The island director admitted that the administration &#8220;always comes after&#8221; the private sector, especially in Ibiza, where innovation in leisure is constant. But he defended that the public role should focus on <strong data-start=\"2986\" data-end=\"3015\">regulating with common sense<\/strong>, accompanying and encouraging the industry to continue generating opportunities without compromising coexistence. <\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3118\" data-end=\"3350\">He also recalled the summer of 2021, when the island experienced the season without nightlife. &#8220;<strong data-start=\"3207\" data-end=\"3260\">There were those who said &#8216;this is the Ibiza we want,'&#8221;<\/strong>he commented. &#8220;But to give up our differentiating element would be to impoverish the destination.&#8221; <\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"3427\" data-end=\"3485\">From Valencia, Sydney and Barcelona: Ibiza as an example<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"3487\" data-end=\"3589\">Not only Costa placed Ibiza as a reference. The other three speakers at the table reinforced that message: <\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3591\" data-end=\"3801\"><strong data-start=\"3591\" data-end=\"3607\">Tico Torrons<\/strong>, president of <em data-start=\"3623\" data-end=\"3644\">Valencia Night Live<\/em>, spoke bluntly: &#8220;<strong data-start=\"3667\" data-end=\"3684\">I am envious<\/strong>. In Valencia they come for the culture or gastronomy and discover the leisure. In Ibiza it&#8217;s the other way around&#8230; and they do it very well&#8221;.  <\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3803\" data-end=\"4205\"><strong data-start=\"3803\" data-end=\"3821\">Victoria Moixe<\/strong>, of the New South Wales Government, told how Sydney lost dynamism because of nighttime hyper-regulation: &#8220;<strong data-start=\"3931\" data-end=\"3988\">Sydney was a city that went to sleep at nine o&#8217;clock<\/strong>.&#8221; The restrictions, he said, were costing <strong data-start=\"4025\" data-end=\"4063\">$16 billion a year<\/strong> in economic impact. Recovery came when the city realized that the nighttime economy is &#8220;a vital part of urban identity.&#8221;  <\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4207\" data-end=\"4628\"><strong data-start=\"4207\" data-end=\"4222\">David L\u00f3pez<\/strong>, director of Costa Este and vice-president of the Catalan nightlife employers&#8217; association, put numbers on the table: &#8221; <strong data-start=\"4341\" data-end=\"4385\">38% of Barcelona&#8217;s tourist offer<\/strong> last year was motivated by nightlife. The leisure tourist <g id=\"gid_2\">spends three times more<\/g> than the average tourist&#8221;. And he added: &#8220;<strong data-start=\"4518\" data-end=\"4546\">Ibiza is a great example<\/strong> of how nightlife can serve to open doors to other attractions of the destination&#8221;.  <\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"4717\" data-end=\"4757\">Cross-cutting leisure, including families<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"4759\" data-end=\"5236\">The table closed with a reflection by <strong data-start=\"4794\" data-end=\"4815\">Jos\u00e9 Luis Ben\u00edtez<\/strong>, president of Ocio de Ibiza: &#8220;Not everyone comes for the party, but <strong data-start=\"4892\" data-end=\"4922\">almost everyone goes out for a night<\/strong>&#8220;. Ben\u00edtez recalled that there are even hotels that offer babysitting services so that families can enjoy the nightlife. This is further proof that, like it or not, <g id=\"gid_2\">nightlife is part of the island&#8217;s life<\/g>, economy and image.
