The venue, located next to Opium, the group&#8217;s nightclub, on the city&#8217;s seafront, was reborn in October of this year under the brand name of another legendary brand linked to Ibiza and which represents the recovery of the historic label linked to the collective memory of <strong data-start=\"1152\" data-end=\"1161\">Ibiza&#8217;<\/strong>s nights: <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/lavozdeibiza.com\/actualidad\/ku-ibiza-abrira-nuevamente-un-grupo-promotor-se-ha-propuesto-devolver-a-la-vida-a-la-marca\/\">KU Barcelona<\/a> <\/strong>.   <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h5><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/lavozdeibiza.com\/en\/current-news\/we-conceived-unvrs-as-an-opera-house-the-intrahistory-of-the-worlds-best-club-told-exclusively-by-its-founder\/\">&#8220;We conceived [UNVRS] as an &#8216;opera house'&#8221;: the intrahistory of the world&#8217;s best club told exclusively by its founder  <\/a><\/strong><\/h5>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"1444\" data-end=\"1904\">In the context of the <strong data-start=\"1277\" data-end=\"1324\">10th International Congress of Nightlife<\/strong>, which has gathered this week in Valencia experts, institutions and operators from around the world to analyze the challenges of the sector, <strong>David Lopez, deputy director of Costa Este<\/strong>, explains in detail and exclusively to <strong>La Voz de Ibiza<\/strong> the reasons for the change and reflects on the evolution of Pacha after the purchase first by the still owner of <a href=\"https:\/\/lavozdeibiza.com\/series\/nochevieja-en-lio-ibiza-entradas-y-reservas-disponibles\/\">L\u00edo Ibiza<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/lavozdeibiza.com\/actualidad\/pacha-el-pelotazo-frustrado-de-trilantic\/\">Trilantic<\/a> and then <a href=\"https:\/\/lavozdeibiza.com\/actualidad\/five-holdings-descarta-nuevas-expansiones-de-la-marca-pacha-fuera-de-ibiza\/\">Five Holding<\/a>. Pacha Ibiza has not wanted to comment on the news. <\/p>\n<h2><strong data-start=\"1913\" data-end=\"2038\">Costa Este breaks up with Pacha: &#8220;We wondered what was really in it for us to have two cherries at the door&#8221;.<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"2040\" data-end=\"2570\"><strong data-start=\"2040\" data-end=\"2054\">Costa Este<\/strong> opened its Pach\u00e1 Barcelona franchise in 2015, after years of consolidating its presence on the seafront. L\u00f3pez recalls that <strong data-start=\"2178\" data-end=\"2209\">he had been with the group for 16 years<\/strong>, and when the opportunity arose to open a new location next to Opium, they opted to franchise the cherry brand to avoid internal <em>cannibalization<\/em>. <\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2040\" data-end=\"2570\">&#8220;<strong data-start=\"2370\" data-end=\"2559\">We had already been in the area of Barcelona&#8217;s Maritime Front since 2007 with the Opium brand, and then the opportunity arose in 2015 to open a new location next to Opium<\/strong>,&#8221; he explains.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2572\" data-end=\"2919\">At that time, Pacha represented a strategic solution: &#8220;<strong data-start=\"2642\" data-end=\"2917\">We took the easy path of choosing to franchise with Pacha, because that provided us with guidelines at the level of decoration, at the level of operation, at the level of image, at the level of concept, which we wanted to avoid confrontation with Opium<\/strong>&#8220;.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2572\" data-end=\"2919\">Somehow, they aspired to become an extension of the mythical Ibiza venue in winter and take advantage of synergies when booking artists and configuring posters. This was not the case. <\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2921\" data-end=\"3027\"><strong style=\"font-size: 16px;\" data-start=\"3031\" data-end=\"3284\">&#8220;Then comes the time to renew the contract, and then you ask yourself: What do we do now? Is it worth it? Lopez explains that the franchise was signed expecting a real operational link with Ibiza. &#8220;<strong data-start=\"4058\" data-end=\"4294\">We thought that in the low season we could receive many of the activities or parties, artists, etc., that Ibiza had during the summer, and that somehow we could be the base of operations in winter<\/strong>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4298\" data-end=\"4450\">That, he says, was discussed with the founder of the empire <strong data-start=\"4326\" data-end=\"4344\">Ricardo Urgell<\/strong> and with the family: &#8220;<strong data-start=\"4366\" data-end=\"4448\">We had talked to Ricardo Urgell at the time and that predisposition existed<\/strong>&#8220;. But the situation changed after the sale of the group: &#8220;<strong data-start=\"4505\" data-end=\"4609\">We were working on this when the sale to the Trilantic group took place, and then all this was diluted<\/strong>&#8220;. <\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4613\" data-end=\"4878\">With the subsequent sale to <strong data-start=\"4638\" data-end=\"4655\">Five Holdings <\/strong>(current owner of Grupo Pacha), the dynamics did not pick up again either. Costa Este continued to operate the premises successfully, but without receiving any relevant external input, according to L\u00f3pez. <\/p>\n<h2><strong data-start=\"4887\" data-end=\"4969\">The loss of essence of the Pacha brand<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"4971\" data-end=\"5222\">The interviewee argues that the corporate change &#8211; from a family-owned brand to a brand managed by investment funds &#8211; has had profound consequences on Pacha&#8217;s identity.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5224\" data-end=\"5448\">&#8220;<strong data-start=\"5225\" data-end=\"5438\">Pacha is a brand that in some way was a seal of identity that was very united and very marked by the personality and the person of Ricardo Urgell. They were subject and predicate practically one of the other. <\/strong>&#8220;, he says.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5450\" data-end=\"5847\">From this perspective, L\u00f3pez points out that the entry of a fund alters the original philosophy: &#8220;<strong data-start=\"5546\" data-end=\"5845\">When the group undergoes a change and enters into what would be a more formal management, into what would be a business concept, such as that of an investment fund, which has to give results accounts and explanations to its shareholders, that casual, so human, so different point of view that Ricardo Urgell could perhaps impregnate, is lost<\/strong>&#8220;.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5849\" data-end=\"5887\">And he makes a blunt comparison: <strong style=\"font-size: 16px;\" data-start=\"5891\" data-end=\"6116\">&#8220;So what is the difference between Pacha and any other slightly relevant brand in the whole world. Take me a nightclub in Las Vegas and tell me what the difference is between the nightclub in Las Vegas and the Pacha of today&#8221;.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2><strong data-start=\"6335\" data-end=\"6447\">Barcelona and the resurrection of KU<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"6449\" data-end=\"6660\">After terminating the contract with Pacha, Costa Este was faced with a strategic decision: continue as its own brand or adopt a pre-existing banner. The answer came in the form of an unexpected proposal.   <strong>&#8220;The opportunity arose to say, hey, why can&#8217;t we leverage the KU brand? Whoever has it is willing to offer it to us and work out a good deal. <\/strong>&#8220;. L\u00f3pez refers to <a href=\"https:\/\/lavozdeibiza.com\/actualidad\/santiago-llorens-el-hombre-detras-del-regreso-de-ku-me-gustaria-que-locomia-haga-un-show-al-mes\/\"><strong>Santiago Llorens<\/strong><\/a>former director of Pacha in Madrid and Barcelona and<strong> CEO of Grupo KU<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"6828\" data-end=\"7106\">The decision was not only economic, but also symbolic. &#8220;<strong data-start=\"6882\" data-end=\"7104\">It has a sentimental value, because it is a brand that also has its origin in Ibiza and that somehow coexisted for many years with Pach\u00e1, being a little bit Pacha&#8217;s competition or being the alternative to Pacha<\/strong>&#8220;.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"7108\" data-end=\"7349\">The interviewee admits that <strong data-start=\"7135\" data-end=\"7189\">the new generations no longer remember what KU was<\/strong>, an emblematic venue located in what is now UNVRS and was formerly Privilege, and that rebuilding that imaginary will be a job from scratch: &#8220;<strong data-start=\"7255\" data-end=\"7347\">You say to the new generations: do you know what KU is? and they don&#8217;t know what you are talking about <\/strong>&#8220;.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"7108\" data-end=\"7349\">However, he also recognizes that <strong data-start=\"7377\" data-end=\"7429\">the store was already functioning thanks to his own work<\/strong>, which facilitated the change: &#8220;<strong data-start=\"7462\" data-end=\"7625\">Since we were really doing relatively well with our own direct efforts, the name change didn&#8217;t cause us much of a problem<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_138650\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-138650\" style=\"width: 1190px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-138649 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/lavozdeibiza.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/KU-Barcelona.-Fotografia-YouBarcelona.jpg\" alt=\"KU Barcelona, which opened its doors a month and a half ago. Photo: YouBarcelona<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2><strong data-start=\"8941\" data-end=\"8994\">East Coast: a philosophy that explains the decision<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"8996\" data-end=\"9284\">To understand the positioning of Costa Este, L\u00f3pez recalls how it started: &#8220;<strong data-start=\"9083\" data-end=\"9282\">Our group was born from the perspective of two brothers, Javier and Ram\u00f3n Bordas, who when they were young started their career setting up a tent in Calella thinking about the people who come to spend the summer<\/strong>&#8220;.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"9286\" data-end=\"9452\">That naturalness, he says, generated a special magic: &#8220;<strong data-start=\"9345\" data-end=\"9450\">Sometimes when things are done that way is when they have magic and that magic is what creates that identity<\/strong>. That is why, he says, purely financial models can dilute the essence: &#8220;<strong data-start=\"9534\" data-end=\"9591\">When Pacha is sold to Trilantic, it is already denaturalized<\/strong>&#8220;. <\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"7720\" data-end=\"7770\"><strong data-start=\"7723\" data-end=\"7770\">Clubbing culture and its epochal change<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"7772\" data-end=\"7939\">The interview takes a more sociological turn when L\u00f3pez analyzes how the concept of disco has evolved. His reading connects with the memory of Ibiza&#8217;s nightlife. &#8220;<strong data-start=\"7942\" data-end=\"8084\">Nightlife was born as being a meeting center where people socialize, where people meet, where people get to know each other<\/strong>,&#8221; he recalls.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"8098\" data-end=\"8288\">In that original model, the protagonist was the <strong data-start=\"8145\" data-end=\"8161\">resident DJ<\/strong>: &#8220;<strong data-start=\"8166\" data-end=\"8286\">It was usually the resident who ended up winning over the audience, working those loyal customers night after night<\/strong>&#8220;. Then came the changes: &#8220;<strong data-start=\"8321\" data-end=\"8358\">The figure of the guest DJ appeared<\/strong>,&#8221; he says, and with him came international promoters, especially <strong data-start=\"8424\" data-end=\"8451\">the British in Ibiza<\/strong>, who began to manage specific nights. <\/p>\n<p data-start=\"8498\" data-end=\"8674\">That process led to a new paradigm: &#8220;<strong data-start=\"8543\" data-end=\"8672\">I go to a place because so-and-so is coming to play today. You don&#8217;t care if it&#8217;s called KU, if it&#8217;s called Pacha or whatever it&#8217;s called. <\/strong>&#8220;.
