This was warned by <strong data-start=\"571\" data-end=\"587\">Jaume Vadell<\/strong>, professor of Biology at the University of the Balearic Islands (UIB) during his speech at the Commission on Climate Change in Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries of the Parliament. <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h4><a href=\"https:\/\/lavozdeibiza.com\/en\/current-news\/more-than-130-students-from-ibiza-explore-the-countryside-as-a-job-opportunity\/\">More than 130 students from Ibiza explore the countryside as a job opportunity<\/a><\/h4>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 data-start=\"712\" data-end=\"792\"><strong data-start=\"715\" data-end=\"792\">Vineyards and almond trees, among the most vulnerable crops<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"794\" data-end=\"1135\">Vadell explained that <strong data-start=\"817\" data-end=\"837\">woody crops<\/strong>, including vineyards and almond trees, depend on a minimum number of hours of cold to maintain their productivity. With increasingly warmer winters, that need would no longer be guaranteed in much of the archipelago. &#8220;If the temperature increases too much, yields go down,&#8221; he warned.  <\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1137\" data-end=\"1358\">In his opinion, the scenario forces to <strong data-start=\"1172\" data-end=\"1211\">rethink the agricultural zoning<\/strong> and to evaluate which areas of the Balearic Islands -and especially of the Pitiusas- can continue to host with guarantees these crops in the coming decades.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1360\" data-end=\"1512\">He also pointed out that products very present in Ibizan orchards, such as <strong data-start=\"1434\" data-end=\"1460\">tomato, melon or watermelon<\/strong>, could be compromised by heat stress.<\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"1514\" data-end=\"1575\"><strong data-start=\"1517\" data-end=\"1575\">Ibiza and Formentera, the most affected in the archipelago<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"1577\" data-end=\"1808\">The biologist stressed that the impact of climate change is not uniform in all the islands. While in Menorca it is &#8220;less extreme&#8221; and in Mallorca it is &#8220;variable according to areas&#8221;, in <strong data-start=\"1755\" data-end=\"1807\">Ibiza and Formentera the situation is &#8220;more critical&#8221;.<\/strong> <\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1810\" data-end=\"2206\">Vadell presented a comparison between <strong data-start=\"1848\" data-end=\"1873\">Es Mercadal (Menorca)<\/strong> and <strong data-start=\"1876\" data-end=\"1893\">Santa Eul\u00e0ria<\/strong>, based on rainfall data, plant regeneration and aquifer capacity. The projections show that, with increases of one and two degrees, the <strong data-start=\"2047\" data-end=\"2105\">vegetation reserve of Santa Eul\u00e0ria suffers much more<\/strong>, due to the increase in evapotranspiration and the lower water resilience of the Pitiusan terrain. <\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2208\" data-end=\"2465\">This fragility is aggravated by increasingly frequent episodes of <strong data-start=\"2274\" data-end=\"2298\">torrential rains<\/strong>, which cause runoff, loss of fertile soil and discharges of clay water into the sea. &#8220;That land is a non-renewable resource and has been lost forever,&#8221; he warned. <\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"2467\" data-end=\"2537\"><strong data-start=\"2470\" data-end=\"2537\">Olive and carob trees, better adapted; corn and alfalfa, with limits<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"2539\" data-end=\"2744\">Despite the adverse outlook, Vadell pointed out that some crops could be better adapted to the future climate of the Pitiusas. Among them, the <strong data-start=\"2673\" data-end=\"2682\">olive tree<\/strong> and the <strong data-start=\"2688\" data-end=\"2701\">carob tree<\/strong>, which he described as &#8220;all-terrain&#8221; species. <\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2746\" data-end=\"2927\">On the other hand, <strong data-start=\"2760\" data-end=\"2768\">corn<\/strong> or <strong data-start=\"2774\" data-end=\"2785\">alfalfa<\/strong>, although tolerant of heat, see their growth limited from <strong data-start=\"2856\" data-end=\"2868\">36-37 \u00baC<\/strong>, an increasingly common figure in Ibizan summers.<\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"2929\" data-end=\"2986\"><strong data-start=\"2932\" data-end=\"2986\">Proposals to mitigate the impact on the Pitiusas islands<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"2988\" data-end=\"3087\">To slow the deterioration of agricultural soil and increase its resilience, Vadell proposed measures such as:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"3089\" data-end=\"3337\">\n<li data-start=\"3089\" data-end=\"3177\">\n<p data-start=\"3091\" data-end=\"3177\"><strong data-start=\"3091\" data-end=\"3126\">Increase organic matter<\/strong> by plant covers when possible.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"3178\" data-end=\"3207\">\n<p data-start=\"3180\" data-end=\"3207\">Use of <strong data-start=\"3187\" data-end=\"3204\">green manure<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"3208\" data-end=\"3274\">\n<p data-start=\"3210\" data-end=\"3274\">Better use of crop residues.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"3275\" data-end=\"3337\">\n<p data-start=\"3277\" data-end=\"3337\">Adjustments in <strong data-start=\"3291\" data-end=\"3312\">soil tillage<\/strong> to reduce erosion.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"3339\" data-end=\"3602\">The scientist recalled that global warming, driven by the intensive use of fossil fuels, has multiplied the frequency of extreme episodes: from one every ten years &#8220;in a world without human intervention&#8221; to <strong data-start=\"3562\" data-end=\"3601\">more than one per year today<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3604\" data-end=\"3821\">A scenario that, according to their analysis, places <strong data-start=\"3649\" data-end=\"3715\">Ibiza and Formentera in the front line of agricultural vulnerability<\/strong> and requires quick
