As of <strong data-start=\"519\" data-end=\"541\">January 1, 2026<\/strong>, the date on which the V16 light beacon will replace the traditional emergency triangles, the <strong data-start=\"694\" data-end=\"701\">V27<\/strong>, a new digital signal defined by the DGT as a &#8220;virtual triangle&#8221;, will also be integrated.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"782\" data-end=\"1116\">Both systems will coexist, but their operation and their role in road safety will be very different. While the V16 is a physical device that the driver must place on the vehicle, the V27 cannot be touched or seen with the naked eye: it acts as an intelligent warning that will appear directly on the car&#8217;s instrumentation. <\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"1118\" data-end=\"1162\"><strong data-start=\"1118\" data-end=\"1162\">V16 Beacons, mandatory as of 2026<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"1164\" data-end=\"1484\">The V16 beacon has become one of the most talked-about road safety devices in recent years. Its definitive implementation will come on <strong data-start=\"1314\" data-end=\"1336\">January 1, 2026<\/strong>, when it will be <strong data-start=\"1361\" data-end=\"1425\">mandatory for all vehicles circulating in Spain<\/strong>, completely replacing the emergency triangles. <\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1486\" data-end=\"1833\">This luminous device must meet one key requirement: it must be <strong data-start=\"1553\" data-end=\"1582\">connected and geolocated<\/strong>. Thanks to this, every time a driver activates a V16 beacon, the location of the damaged or accident vehicle will be automatically sent to the <strong data-start=\"1741\" data-end=\"1752\">DGT 3.0<\/strong> platform, the system that centralizes traffic and mobility information in real time.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h5><a href=\"https:\/\/lavozdeibiza.com\/en\/current-news\/what-is-the-risk-of-v16-beacons-and-how-does-it-affect-driver-safety\/?swcfpc=1\">What is the risk of V16 beacons and how does it affect driver safety?<\/a><\/h5>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"1835\" data-end=\"2140\">However, since their announcement, the <strong data-start=\"1870\" data-end=\"1885\">V16 Beacons<\/strong> have generated controversy. One of the most repeated criticisms is its <strong data-start=\"1949\" data-end=\"1988\">limited visibility during the day<\/strong>, especially in situations of sharp curves or changes in gradient, where the light beam can go unnoticed and generate risky situations.<\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"2142\" data-end=\"2184\"><strong data-start=\"2142\" data-end=\"2184\">The V27, the so-called &#8220;virtual triangle&#8221;.<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"2186\" data-end=\"2502\">This is precisely where the <strong data-start=\"2230\" data-end=\"2237\">V27<\/strong> comes into play, a technology that does not replace the V16, but complements it. Unlike the physical beacon, the V27 is not an object that is placed on the road. This is a <strong data-start=\"2411\" data-end=\"2428\">virtual signal<\/strong> that will be displayed directly on the <strong data-start=\"2465\" data-end=\"2501\">vehicle&#8217;s on-board systems<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2504\" data-end=\"2753\">The V27 is regulated by <strong data-start=\"2532\" data-end=\"2573\">Royal Decree 159\/2021, of March 16,<\/strong> the same that establishes the legal framework for the V16. Although this regulation came into force in July 2021, the DGT will not start implementing this technology until <strong data-start=\"2735\" data-end=\"2752\">January 2026<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2755\" data-end=\"3021\">From that date on, while V16 will be mandatory, <strong data-start=\"2815\" data-end=\"2849\">V27 will be voluntary<\/strong>. Its operation will be based on the connectivity of the vehicle with the <strong data-start=\"2918\" data-end=\"2984\">National Access Point for Traffic and Mobility Information<\/strong>, integrated in the DGT 3.0 platform.<\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"3023\" data-end=\"3069\"><strong data-start=\"3023\" data-end=\"3069\">How the V27 beacon works in practice<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"3071\" data-end=\"3366\">When a driver activates a <strong data-start=\"3102\" data-end=\"3116\">V16 beacon<\/strong> or when a hazard is registered on the road (such as a stopped vehicle, an accident or an obstacle), the information will be sent to the DGT cloud. From there, the <strong data-start=\"3278\" data-end=\"3285\">V27<\/strong> will cause the warning to appear on connected vehicles driving in the area.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3368\" data-end=\"3684\">The warning will be displayed in the form of a <strong data-start=\"3407\" data-end=\"3460\">virtual triangle on the car&#8217;s instrumentation<\/strong>, giving advance warning of the risk. In this way, the driver will receive the information even before visual contact with the incident, which is especially useful in low visibility or heavy traffic conditions.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h5><a href=\"https:\/\/lavozdeibiza.com\/en\/society\/dgt-clarifies-how-to-correctly-use-connected-v16-beacons-dos-and-donts-in-case-of-failure\/?swcfpc=1\">DGT clarifies how to correctly use connected V16 beacons: do&#8217;s and don&#8217;ts in case of failure<\/a><\/h5>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"3686\" data-end=\"3932\">The DGT has not yet specified <strong data-start=\"3718\" data-end=\"3758\">how exactly the V27 will be integrated into<\/strong> all vehicles, but has made it clear that it will be part of the digital equipment and will depend on the car being connected to the national traffic system&#8217;s cloud.<\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"3934\" data-end=\"3989\"><strong data-start=\"3934\" data-end=\"3989\">Technology designed for the road of the future<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"3991\" data-end=\"4253\">The arrival of the V27 fits in with the technological evolution of the automotive sector. Vehicles are increasingly incorporating <strong data-start=\"4112\" data-end=\"4136\">connected services<\/strong>, and communication between cars and traffic systems is emerging as a key tool for reducing accidents. <\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4255\" data-end=\"4529\">In this context, <strong data-start=\"4277\" data-end=\"4292\">V16 Beacons<\/strong> are considered only the first step. Its mandatory nature ensures that any incident is recorded and reported, while the V27 will allow <strong data-start=\"4441\" data-end=\"4497\">immediate and massive dissemination of this information<\/strong> to nearby drivers.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4531\" data-end=\"4815\">This system relies on <strong data-start=\"4584\" data-end=\"4612\">V2V (vehicle-to-vehicle)<\/strong> communication technologies and cloud-based telematics services. The goal is for vehicles to be able to <strong data-start=\"4729\" data-end=\"4758\">anticipate risks<\/strong>, not just react when they are already on top of the problem.<\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"4817\" data-end=\"4852\"><strong data-start=\"4817\" data-end=\"4852\">Less controversy and more prevention<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"4854\" data-end=\"5202\">Unlike V16, <strong data-start=\"4881\" data-end=\"4888\">V27<\/strong> should not generate as much controversy. As it does not depend on the visibility of a physical light, its effectiveness is not affected by sunlight, rain or road terrain. In addition, as it is a signal that appears directly on the vehicle, the driver&#8217;s reaction margin increases considerably.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h5><a href=\"https:\/\/lavozdeibiza.com\/en\/current-news\/v16-beacons-these-are-the-models-homologated-by-the-dgt-dgt\/?swcfpc=1\">V16 beacons: these are the models homologated by the DGT (DGT)<\/a><\/h5>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"5204\" data-end=\"5378\">The DGT considers that this technology will be key to reducing secondary accidents, one of the main risks when a vehicle stops on the road or shoulder.<\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"5380\" data-end=\"5419\"><strong data-start=\"5380\" data-end=\"5419\">V16 and V27: complementary systems<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"5421\" data-end=\"5729\">Far from competing with each other, the <strong data-start=\"5452\" data-end=\"5505\">V16 and V27 are designed to work together<\/strong>. The physical beacon will continue to be essential to signal the presence of the stopped vehicle and send its location, while the V27 will amplify that warning, bringing it directly to the interior of nearby cars.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5731\" data-end=\"5893\">Thus, the system combines physical and digital signage, an approach that aims at a <strong data-start=\"5814\" data-end=\"5859\">new way of understanding road safety<\/strong>, more preventive and less reactive.<\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"5895\" data-end=\"5935\"><strong data-start=\"5895\" data-end=\"5935\">A progressive change in mobility<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"5937\" data-end=\"6331\">Although the implementation of the V27 will be gradual and will depend on the level of connectivity of the vehicles, its arrival marks a before and after in traffic management in Spain.
