The <strong data-start=\"532\" data-end=\"574\">World Health Organization (WHO)<\/strong> has placed vaccination at the center of its strategy against a scenario of early circulation of the virus, with a sustained increase in influenza activity since October and a rapid expansion of this variant in more than 34 countries since August 2025. <\/p>\n<p data-start=\"834\" data-end=\"1328\">Although global influenza levels remain within expected seasonal patterns, WHO warns of <strong data-start=\"950\" data-end=\"988\">important regional differences<\/strong> and of an epidemiological dynamic that is accelerating in several areas of the northern hemisphere. The focus is not on increased clinical severity &#8211; which, for the moment, has not been observed &#8211; but on the <strong data-start=\"1190\" data-end=\"1218\">speed of transmission<\/strong> and the possible impact that the genetic drift of the virus may have on the effectiveness of vaccines. <\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"1330\" data-end=\"1374\"><strong data-start=\"1330\" data-end=\"1374\">Influenza K under international surveillance<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"1376\" data-end=\"1836\">The A(H3N2) K subclade has become the main WHO surveillance element this season. Already detected in more than thirty countries, its rapid spread has made it necessary to strengthen virological monitoring systems. According to the Organization, this virus presents <strong data-start=\"1654\" data-end=\"1724\">multiple amino acid changes in the hemagglutinin (HA) protein<\/strong> with respect to the J.2.4 clade from which it derives, which represents a significant evolution from the genetic point of view.  <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h5><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/lavozdeibiza.com\/en\/current-news\/what-is-influenza-k-and-why-is-it-worrying-health-experts-in-europe\/?swcfpc=1\">What is influenza K and why is it worrying health experts in Europe?<\/a><\/strong><\/h5>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"1838\" data-end=\"2238\">Despite this evolution, WHO stresses that <strong data-start=\"1880\" data-end=\"1936\">no increase in clinical severity<\/strong> associated with Influenza K <strong data-start=\"1880\" data-end=\"1936\">has been detected<\/strong>. Hospitalization rates, patient profiles and reported complications are similar to those observed with other A(H3N2) viruses in previous seasons. Even so, its ability to spread and its increasing prevalence make monitoring a priority. <\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"2240\" data-end=\"2286\"><strong data-start=\"2240\" data-end=\"2286\">Vaccine, key despite uncertainties<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"2288\" data-end=\"2719\">In this context, WHO has reiterated its core message: <strong data-start=\"2346\" data-end=\"2385\">vaccination remains essential<\/strong>, especially for people at higher risk of complications. Early estimates indicate that influenza vaccine continues to offer protection against hospitalization in both children and adults, although its effectiveness against mild to moderate clinical illness is not yet fully clear. <\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2721\" data-end=\"3048\">&#8220;Vaccines remain essential, especially for people at high risk of influenza complications and their caregivers,&#8221; WHO stresses in its statement. According to preliminary data, protection against hospitalization is between <strong data-start=\"2985\" data-end=\"3009\">70-75% in children<\/strong> and <strong data-start=\"3021\" data-end=\"3047\">30-40% in adults<\/strong>. <\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3050\" data-end=\"3414\">The Organization also recalls that current vaccines include <strong data-start=\"3116\" data-end=\"3136\">three components<\/strong>: A(H1N1)pdm09, A(H3N2) and B\/Victoria. Even in scenarios of partial genetic mismatch, vaccination can significantly reduce the risk of severe disease and complications, a key aspect in a season that is expected to be more intense in terms of transmission. <\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"3416\" data-end=\"3465\"><strong data-start=\"3416\" data-end=\"3465\">An earlier start to the season in Europe<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"3467\" data-end=\"3842\">One of the most striking elements of the current season is its <strong data-start=\"3532\" data-end=\"3561\">earlier timing<\/strong>. In temperate areas of the northern hemisphere, influenza circulation intensified earlier than usual. The WHO European Region officially declared the start of the 2025-2026 season in mid-November, approximately <strong data-start=\"3793\" data-end=\"3841\">four weeks earlier than the historical median<\/strong>.  <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h5><a href=\"https:\/\/lavozdeibiza.com\/en\/society\/the-k-variant-of-the-flu-is-ahead-of-christmas-these-are-the-10-symptoms-you-should-know-about-now\/?swcfpc=1\">The K variant of the flu is ahead of Christmas: these are the 10 symptoms you should know about now<\/a><\/h5>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"3844\" data-end=\"4256\">In many western European countries, consultations for influenza syndrome and hospitalizations began to increase early, with a <strong data-start=\"3990\" data-end=\"4031\">clear predominance of the A(H3N2) virus<\/strong>. This pattern has raised concerns about the pressure it may put on healthcare systems, especially in the care of people over 65 years of age, where hospitalizations are already showing an upward trend. <\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"4258\" data-end=\"4297\"><strong data-start=\"4258\" data-end=\"4297\">An unequal situation by region<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"4299\" data-end=\"4634\">The WHO report paints a mixed picture globally. In the <strong data-start=\"4371\" data-end=\"4398\">United States and Canada<\/strong>, cases are progressively increasing, with a confirmed expansion of the K subclade. In <strong data-start=\"4488\" data-end=\"4498\">Mexico<\/strong>, however, the A(H1N1)pdm09 virus continues to predominate, reflecting the diversity of patterns even within the same region. <\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4636\" data-end=\"5017\">In the <strong data-start=\"4642\" data-end=\"4660\">southern hemisphere<\/strong>, the season has been particularly prolonged in some countries and has not yet fully returned to inter-epidemic levels. <strong data-start=\"4789\" data-end=\"4813\">New Zealand and Fiji<\/strong> have unusually high influenza activity for this time of year, while <strong data-start=\"4904\" data-end=\"4917\">Australia<\/strong> is beginning to see a decline after weeks of intense circulation, also driven by A(H3N2).<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5019\" data-end=\"5221\">In <strong data-start=\"5026\" data-end=\"5049\">tropical regions<\/strong>, where influenza circulates practically all year round, the proportion of A(H3N2) viruses has increased steadily since August, progressively displacing A(H1N1)pdm09.<\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"5223\" data-end=\"5267\"><strong data-start=\"5223\" data-end=\"5267\">The K subclade, dominant in several zones<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"5269\" data-end=\"5532\">WHO notes that the spread of subclade K has been particularly rapid in the <strong data-start=\"5351\" data-end=\"5374\">Western Pacific<\/strong>, where countries such as Australia and New Zealand detected an early increase since August 2025. In <strong data-start=\"5655\" data-end=\"5669\">South America<\/strong>, on the other hand, transmission remains limited and, as of November 4, the presence of subclade K had not been detected. Even so, WHO considers it a priority to maintain surveillance due to the speed at which it is spreading in other parts of the world. <\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"5924\" data-end=\"5969\"><strong data-start=\"5924\" data-end=\"5969\">Health pressure and key recommendations<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"5971\" data-end=\"6306\">The simultaneous increase in influenza and other respiratory viruses can generate <strong data-start=\"6058\" data-end=\"6113\">significant pressure on health systems<\/strong>, especially in countries with less diagnostic capacity, surveillance or availability of hospital beds. Faced with this scenario, WHO insists on several priority lines of action. <\/p>\n<p data-start=\"6308\" data-end=\"6656\">These include the need to <strong data-start=\"6345\" data-end=\"6410\">maintain and reinforce virological and epidemiological surveillance<\/strong>, improve laboratory capacities, strengthen outbreak response and enhance risk communication based on scientific evidence. All of this, the Organization stresses, is key to building trust and combating misinformation. <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h5><a href=\"https:\/\/lavozdeibiza.com\/en\/society\/are-confinements-returning-to-uk-schools-governments-decision-on-wave-of-aggressive-flu-outbreaks\/?swcfpc=1\">Are confinements returning to UK schools? Government&#8217;s decision on wave of &#8216;aggressive flu&#8217; outbreaks <\/a><\/h5>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"6658\" data-end=\"6970\">At the clinical level, WHO recalls that <strong data-start=\"6700\" data-end=\"6762\">most cases of influenza are mild and self-limited<\/strong>, but insists on the importance of early identification of severe cases and the use of antivirals in people at high risk, as these measures can reduce hospitalizations and complications.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"6972\" data-end=\"7189\">It also recommends reinforcing <strong data-start=\"7006\" data-end=\"7065\">infection control measures in healthcare centers<\/strong>, such as the use of masks, patient isolation and additional protection in procedures that generate aerosols.<\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"7191\" data-end=\"7243\"><strong data-start=\"7191\" data-end=\"7243\">No restrictions, but with reinforced surveillance<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"7245\" data-end=\"7513\">Despite the early season and the spread of <strong data-start=\"7301\" data-end=\"7312\">Influenza K<\/strong>, WHO is not recommending travel or trade restrictions with any country. The decision is based on the absence of evidence of increased severity or unusual global impact associated with this subclass. <\/p>\n<p data-start=\"7515\" data-end=\"7950\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\">The Organization&#8217;s message is clear: calm, but not complacency. The flu season has started earlier, the virus is moving fast and vaccination is once again the <strong data-start=\"7692\" data-end=\"7752\">most solid tool to reduce the health impact<\/strong>, especially in the most vulnerable groups.
