During 2024, <strong data-start=\"522\" data-end=\"570\">48 requests for aid in dying<\/strong> were registered in the Islands, of which <strong data-start=\"583\" data-end=\"628\">17 were concluded with the effective benefit<\/strong>, which represents an <strong data-start=\"647\" data-end=\"687\">increase of 41.6% compared to 2023<\/strong>, when 12 euthanasias were performed. <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h4><a href=\"https:\/\/lavozdeibiza.com\/en\/current-news\/anger-and-indignation-medical-strike-hangover-complicates-healthcare-and-leaves-delays-of-more-than-a-month\/?swcfpc=1\">&#8220;Anger and indignation&#8221;: medical strike hangover complicates healthcare and leaves delays of more than a month<\/a><\/h4>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"727\" data-end=\"1060\">This is what is stated in the <strong data-start=\"744\" data-end=\"801\">Annual Report on the Aid in Dying Benefit<\/strong>, published Tuesday by the Ministry of Health, which confirms a trend of sustained growth since the law came into force in June 2021. In total, <strong data-start=\"971\" data-end=\"1059\">the Balearic Islands has registered 41 euthanasia benefits until December 31, 2024<\/strong>. <\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1062\" data-end=\"1411\">Of the 48 processes processed last year in the archipelago, <strong data-start=\"1126\" data-end=\"1163\">ten applications were denied<\/strong> because they did not meet the legal requirements, <strong data-start=\"1203\" data-end=\"1258\">three people voluntarily revoked their request<\/strong> and <strong data-start=\"1261\" data-end=\"1302\">18 died during the processing<\/strong> of the procedure. The 17 effective benefits represent <strong data-start=\"1367\" data-end=\"1410\">35.4% of the total number of processes completed.<\/strong> <\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"1413\" data-end=\"1468\">Balearic Islands, among the communities with the highest number of applications<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"1470\" data-end=\"1835\">At the state level, in 2024, <strong data-start=\"1513\" data-end=\"1555\">929 euthanasia request processes<\/strong> were recorded, of which <strong data-start=\"1568\" data-end=\"1611\">426 resulted in actual benefits<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"1616\" data-end=\"1636\">45.86% of the total<\/strong>, which is <strong data-start=\"1655\" data-end=\"1688\">27.5% more than the previous year<\/strong>. Since the approval of the law, the number of requests in Spain has increased by <strong data-start=\"1778\" data-end=\"1786\">437%<\/strong>, reaching <strong data-start=\"1803\" data-end=\"1823\">2,432<\/strong> accumulated <strong data-start=\"1803\" data-end=\"1823\">requests<\/strong>. <\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1837\" data-end=\"2156\">By autonomous region, <strong data-start=\"1864\" data-end=\"1908\">Catalonia leads the number of applications<\/strong> (303, with 142 accepted), followed by <strong data-start=\"1946\" data-end=\"1956\">Madrid<\/strong> (129, with 62 accepted) and the <strong data-start=\"1983\" data-end=\"1997\">Basque Country<\/strong> (75, with 50). <strong data-start=\"2012\" data-end=\"2048\">The Balearic Islands is in sixth position<\/strong>, behind Andalusia and the Canary Islands, but ahead of regions such as Castilla y Le\u00f3n, Asturias and Galicia.<\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"2158\" data-end=\"2229\">Older than 60 years of age and neurological pathologies, the majority profile<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"2231\" data-end=\"2544\">The report reveals that <strong data-start=\"2253\" data-end=\"2319\">almost 76% of the applicants were over 60 years of age<\/strong>, with the group over 80 years of age being particularly significant. <strong data-start=\"2392\" data-end=\"2453\">Neurological (32.51%) and oncological (29.71%) diseases<\/strong> were the most frequent pathologies, together accounting for more than 62% of the cases. <\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2546\" data-end=\"2814\">As for the processes completed in 2024 in Spain, <strong data-start=\"2602\" data-end=\"2638\">131 applications were denied<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"2640\" data-end=\"2683\">54 people voluntarily withdrew<\/strong> and <strong data-start=\"2686\" data-end=\"2741\">308 died before completing the procedure<\/strong>, which again highlights the complexity and duration of the process.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2816\" data-end=\"3136\">The sustained increase in requests and benefits reflects, according to Health, a <strong data-start=\"2898\" data-end=\"2945\">greater implementation and knowledge of the law<\/strong>, as well as the progressive consolidation of the right to euthanasia within the public health system, also in communities such as the Balearic Islands, where cases continue to grow year
