{"id":147120,"date":"2025-12-25T13:40:00","date_gmt":"2025-12-25T12:40:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lavozdeibiza.com\/sin-categorizar\/the-vagus-nerve-key-to-a-younger-heart\/"},"modified":"2025-12-25T13:40:00","modified_gmt":"2025-12-25T12:40:00","slug":"the-vagus-nerve-key-to-a-younger-heart","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lavozdeibiza.com\/en\/current-news\/the-vagus-nerve-key-to-a-younger-heart\/","title":{"rendered":"The vagus nerve, key to a younger heart"},"content":{"rendered":"<p data-start=\"238\" data-end=\"528\">Restoring the connection between the <strong data-start=\"269\" data-end=\"305\">heart and the right vagus nerve<\/strong> may <strong data-start=\"312\" data-end=\"351\">prevent cardiac aging<\/strong>, according to a study led by experts at the <strong data-start=\"398\" data-end=\"441\">Sant&#8217;Anna School of Advanced Studies<\/strong> in Italy and published in the scientific journal <strong data-start=\"491\" data-end=\"527\"><em data-start=\"493\" data-end=\"525\">Science Translational Medicine<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"530\" data-end=\"876\">The research concludes that <strong data-start=\"560\" data-end=\"612\">preserving bilateral cardiac vagal innervation-especially<\/strong> that of the right vagus nerve-acts as an <strong data-start=\"670\" data-end=\"711\">anti-aging factor in the heart<\/strong> by directly protecting the health of <strong data-start=\"754\" data-end=\"772\">cardiomyocytes<\/strong>, the cells responsible for cardiac contraction, <strong data-start=\"827\" data-end=\"875\">independent of heart rate<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"878\" data-end=\"1153\">&#8220;The heart ages more rapidly when the integrity of the connection with the vagus nerve is lost,&#8221; explains <strong data-start=\"990\" data-end=\"1011\">Vincenzo Lionetti<\/strong>, professor and head of the study, who stresses the importance of this nerve pathway in the long-term preservation of cardiac function.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"1155\" data-end=\"1201\">The protective role of the right vagus nerve<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"1203\" data-end=\"1587\">The study focuses on the <strong data-start=\"1233\" data-end=\"1265\">right cardiac vagus nerve<\/strong>, which it identifies as a true <strong data-start=\"1303\" data-end=\"1338\">biological protector of the heart<\/strong>. According to the researchers, even a <strong data-start=\"1378\" data-end=\"1402\">partial restoration<\/strong> of this connection is sufficient to <strong data-start=\"1439\" data-end=\"1524\">counteract the cardiac remodeling mechanisms associated with aging<\/strong> and maintain <strong data-start=\"1540\" data-end=\"1565\">effective contractility<\/strong> of the heart muscle. <\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1589\" data-end=\"1782\">This finding reinforces the idea that the aging of the heart does not depend solely on mechanical or circulatory factors, but also on the <strong data-start=\"1737\" data-end=\"1781\">integrity of its neurovegetative control.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"1784\" data-end=\"1846\">A multidisciplinary approach between medicine and bioengineering<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"1848\" data-end=\"2263\">The study stands out for its <strong data-start=\"1874\" data-end=\"1915\">markedly multidisciplinary approach<\/strong>, combining <strong data-start=\"1929\" data-end=\"2000\">experimental medicine, cardiovascular research and bioengineering<\/strong>. The research has been led by the <strong data-start=\"2043\" data-end=\"2102\">Translational Critical Care Unit (TrancriLab)<\/strong> of the Center for Interdisciplinary Research in Health Sciences, together with the <strong data-start=\"2188\" data-end=\"2217\">Institute of Biorobotics<\/strong>, both belonging to the Sant&#8217;Anna School. <\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2265\" data-end=\"2512\">The laboratory led by Prof. <strong data-start=\"2305\" data-end=\"2325\">Silvestro Micera<\/strong> was instrumental in the development of an <strong data-start=\"2359\" data-end=\"2406\">implantable bioabsorbable nerve conduit<\/strong> designed to <strong data-start=\"2422\" data-end=\"2511\">promote and guide spontaneous regeneration of the thoracic vagus nerve at the cardiac level<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2514\" data-end=\"2682\">The contribution of bioengineering made it possible to demonstrate that controlled regeneration of this nerve pathway can have <strong data-start=\"2631\" data-end=\"2664\">lasting functional effects<\/strong> on the heart.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"2684\" data-end=\"2732\">New perspectives for cardiac surgery<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"2734\" data-end=\"3060\">The authors consider that these results <strong data-start=\"2778\" data-end=\"2816\">open up new clinical perspectives<\/strong>, especially in the field of <strong data-start=\"2851\" data-end=\"2894\">cardiothoracic surgery and transplantation<\/strong>. Restoring cardiac vagal innervation during surgery could become an <strong data-start=\"2997\" data-end=\"3059\">innovative strategy for long-term cardiac protection<\/strong>. <\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3062\" data-end=\"3257\">&#8220;This approach could shift the clinical paradigm from treating late complications of premature cardiac aging to <strong data-start=\"3210\" data-end=\"3224\">preventing<\/strong>them,&#8221;
