That is the deadline set by the <strong data-start=\"514\" data-end=\"562\">expansion of the Santa Eul\u00e0ria desalination plant<\/strong>, whose tender has just been approved by the Balearic Government through <strong data-start=\"597\" data-end=\"607\">Abaqua<\/strong>, and which will significantly increase the production capacity of desalinated water on the island. <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li data-start=\"362\" data-end=\"712\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/lavozdeibiza.com\/actualidad\/la-nueva-planta-desaladora-de-ibiza-ya-tiene-fecha-y-producira-1-000-m%c2%b3-de-agua-al-dia-en-sant-antoni\/\">The new desalination plant in Ibiza has a date and will produce 1,000 m\u00b3 of water per day in Sant Antoni<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"714\" data-end=\"1064\"><a href=\"https:\/\/lavozdeibiza.com\/actualidad\/la-cuarta-desaladora-infraestructuras-moviles-y-balsas-las-propuestas-del-consell-de-ibiza-ante-la-sequia\/\">Until this work is completed, the system will continue to operate <strong data-start=\"780\" data-end=\"812\">with no real safety margin<\/strong><\/a>. As happened this summer, <strong data-start=\"846\" data-end=\"961\">a major breakdown in any of the desalination plants during the high season would jeopardize the supply<\/strong>, since production is working at maximum capacity and the only available buffer is that offered by the reservoirs. There is water in storage for a few hours. Maybe a few days.   <\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"1066\" data-end=\"1117\">The expansion that will allow the system to breathe<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"1119\" data-end=\"1496\">The project will allow the Santa Eul\u00e0ria desalination plant to increase from <strong data-start=\"1185\" data-end=\"1227\">16,000 to 22,000 cubic meters per day<\/strong>, almost 40% more, through the incorporation of a <strong data-start=\"1261\" data-end=\"1299\">fourth reverse osmosis rack<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1119\" data-end=\"1496\">This is not a local improvement: the <strong data-start=\"1338\" data-end=\"1391\">island&#8217;s three desalination plants are interconnected<\/strong>, so the new flow can be redistributed according to the needs of the system as a whole.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1498\" data-end=\"1888\">This point is key because <strong data-start=\"1525\" data-end=\"1570\">the Ibiza desalination plant cannot be expanded<\/strong>, which makes Santa Eul\u00e0ria the only structural pillar capable of absorbing the growth in demand, until the fourth desalination plant is available for which it will be many years, perhaps a decade.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1498\" data-end=\"1888\">The Sant Antoni plant, on the other hand, will be <strong data-start=\"1728\" data-end=\"1766\">reinforced with a mobile desalination plant<\/strong>, a backup solution designed for emergencies and consumption peaks, but insufficient to solve the basic problem. It will provide an additional 1,000 cubic meters per day. <\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"1890\" data-end=\"1935\">Skyrocketing production and depleted aquifers<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"1937\" data-end=\"2314\">The project comes after years of <strong data-start=\"1968\" data-end=\"2021\">sustained increase in the consumption of desalinated water<\/strong>, caused by the <strong data-start=\"2040\" data-end=\"2080\">accelerated deterioration of aquifers<\/strong>, both in quantity and quality. According to Abaqua data, Ibiza has gone from consuming <strong data-start=\"2172\" data-end=\"2218\">about 5 cubic hectometers per year in 2009<\/strong> to <strong data-start=\"2221\" data-end=\"2240\">almost 13 in 2024<\/strong>, and everything indicates that <strong data-start=\"2262\" data-end=\"2313\">in 2025 it will exceed 14 cubic hectometers<\/strong>. <\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2316\" data-end=\"2568\">This evolution has led to an <strong data-start=\"2376\" data-end=\"2432\">increasing number of months of<\/strong> operation <strong data-start=\"2376\" data-end=\"2432\">at the limit of their capacity<\/strong>, reducing to a minimum the capacity to react to breakdowns, drought episodes or peaks in demand associated with the tourist season.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"2570\" data-end=\"2612\">The fourth desalination plant, just a promise<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"2614\" data-end=\"2885\">Meanwhile, the fourth desalination <a href=\"https:\/\/lavozdeibiza.com\/en\/current-news\/the-fourth-desalination-plant-that-sets-off-environmental-alarms-in-ibiza\/\"><strong data-start=\"2641\" data-end=\"2671\">fourth desalination plant in Ibiza<\/strong> <\/a>remains on paper. It has no <strong data-start=\"2708\" data-end=\"2730\">defined location<\/strong>, no technical project, and no timetable. To date, it <strong data-start=\"2782\" data-end=\"2822\">is no more than a political commitment<\/strong>, with no real impact on the island&#8217;s production capacity.  <\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2887\" data-end=\"3024\">For this reason, the Santa Eul\u00e0ria extension has become the <strong data-start=\"2950\" data-end=\"2967\">centerpiece<\/strong> to prevent the system from collapsing in the coming years.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"3026\" data-end=\"3091\">A complex project, almost 10 million and no margin for error<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"3093\" data-end=\"3408\">The project includes the remodeling of the seawater intake, new pipelines, filters and high-pressure equipment, a new reverse osmosis train, improvements in the pumping and distribution of treated water, as well as the adaptation of the electrical and control installations and the brine discharge system.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3410\" data-end=\"3637\">Everything has been designed with criteria of <strong data-start=\"3447\" data-end=\"3475\">minimum environmental impact<\/strong> and, above all, with a priority objective: to <strong data-start=\"3520\" data-end=\"3570\">keep the plant operational during the works<\/strong>, aware that Ibiza cannot afford prolonged stoppages.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3639\" data-end=\"4019\">The base bidding budget amounts to <strong data-start=\"3684\" data-end=\"3710\">9.99 million euros<\/strong>, including VAT. In addition, there is a <strong data-start=\"3756\" data-end=\"3778\">technical assistance<\/strong> contract for construction management and health and safety coordination for <strong data-start=\"3848\" data-end=\"3865\">314,600 euros<\/strong>, with a total term of <strong data-start=\"3889\" data-end=\"3901\">25 months<\/strong>. The execution period of the works will be <strong data-start=\"3946\" data-end=\"3958\">23 months<\/strong>, once awarded and authorized by the Consell de Govern.  <\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"4021\" data-end=\"4048\">Two more summers on the edge<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"4050\" data-end=\"4285\">Until the expansion becomes a reality, Ibiza will continue to rely on a system <strong data-start=\"4132\" data-end=\"4156\">stressed to the maximum<\/strong>, where any relevant failure in a desalination plant during peak demand months could have immediate consequences.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4287\" data-end=\"4541\">The expansion of Santa Eul\u00e0ria, together with the mobile desalination plant of Sant Antoni and a greater incorporation of desalinated water by the municipalities, will alleviate the pressure on the aquifers and improve the capacity to respond to emergencies.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4543\" data-end=\"4780\">But the message is clear: <strong data-start=\"4569\" data-end=\"4645\">for the next 24 months, Ibiza will continue to pray that nothing goes wrong<\/strong>.
