{"id":147573,"date":"2025-12-30T12:22:14","date_gmt":"2025-12-30T11:22:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lavozdeibiza.com\/sin-categorizar\/minimum-wage-in-2026-to-start-at-1184-euros-per-month-pending-further-increase\/"},"modified":"2025-12-30T12:22:14","modified_gmt":"2025-12-30T11:22:14","slug":"minimum-wage-in-2026-to-start-at-1184-euros-per-month-pending-further-increase","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lavozdeibiza.com\/en\/current-news\/minimum-wage-in-2026-to-start-at-1184-euros-per-month-pending-further-increase\/","title":{"rendered":"Minimum wage in 2026 to start at 1,184 euros per month pending further increase"},"content":{"rendered":"<p data-start=\"375\" data-end=\"738\"><strong data-start=\"375\" data-end=\"419\">The minimum interprofessional wage (SMI)<\/strong> will start <strong data-start=\"430\" data-end=\"438\">2026<\/strong> unchanged with respect to the end of 2025, at <strong data-start=\"483\" data-end=\"517\">1,184 euros per month in 14 payments<\/strong>, pending agreement by the <strong data-start=\"541\" data-end=\"566\">Ministry of Labor<\/strong> with <strong data-start=\"579\" data-end=\"607\">unions and employers<\/strong> on a new increase after Christmas. The increase, when approved, will have <strong data-start=\"685\" data-end=\"737\">retroactive effect from January 1, 2026<\/strong>. <\/p>\n<p data-start=\"745\" data-end=\"1049\">The <strong data-start=\"748\" data-end=\"760\">SMI 2026<\/strong> will be set taking as a reference the report of the <strong data-start=\"810\" data-end=\"832\">committee of experts<\/strong>, which has proposed two scenarios depending on whether the minimum wage <strong data-start=\"901\" data-end=\"928\">is taxed or not in the IRPF<\/strong>. Specifically, it recommends a rise of <strong data-start=\"969\" data-end=\"1013\">3.1% if the SMI remains tax exempt<\/strong>, or <strong data-start=\"1021\" data-end=\"1048\">4.7% if it is taxed<\/strong>. <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li data-start=\"745\" data-end=\"1049\">\n<h5><a href=\"https:\/\/lavozdeibiza.com\/en\/current-news\/spain-raises-the-retirement-age-in-2026-these-are-the-requirements-to-collect-100-of-the-pension\/?swcfpc=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Spain raises the retirement age in 2026: these are the requirements to collect 100% of the pension<\/a><\/h5>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"1051\" data-end=\"1345\">These proposals would raise the minimum wage to <strong data-start=\"1114\" data-end=\"1139\">1,221 euros per month<\/strong> (37 euros more) if the tax exemption is maintained, or to <strong data-start=\"1212\" data-end=\"1234\">1,240 euros per month<\/strong> (56 euros more) if taxation under <strong data-start=\"1286\" data-end=\"1344\">personal income tax (IRPF)<\/strong> is chosen.<\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"1347\" data-end=\"1407\"><strong data-start=\"1351\" data-end=\"1407\">The role of the committee of experts in the increase of the SMI<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"1409\" data-end=\"1701\">The <strong data-start=\"1412\" data-end=\"1442\">SMI expert committee<\/strong>, created in January 2021 and made up of representatives of the <strong data-start=\"1503\" data-end=\"1515\">government<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"1521\" data-end=\"1535\">trade unions<\/strong> and <strong data-start=\"1548\" data-end=\"1561\">academia<\/strong>, is tasked with ensuring that the minimum wage reaches <strong data-start=\"1625\" data-end=\"1650\">60% of the average wage<\/strong>, as set out in the <strong data-start=\"1676\" data-end=\"1700\">European Social Charter<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1703\" data-end=\"2074\">For the <strong data-start=\"1728\" data-end=\"1736\">2026<\/strong> update, Labor requested two different proposals, with and without taxation, in view of the possibility that the <strong data-start=\"1835\" data-end=\"1847\">Treasury<\/strong> will revise the current personal income tax deduction to adapt it to the increase in the minimum wage. Given that the Ministry of Labor defends that the <strong data-start=\"1981\" data-end=\"1999\">minimum wage<\/strong> should <strong data-start=\"1981\" data-end=\"1999\">not be taxed<\/strong>, everything suggests that <strong data-start=\"2022\" data-end=\"2030\">3.1%<\/strong> will be the starting point of the negotiation. <\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"2076\" data-end=\"2118\"><strong data-start=\"2080\" data-end=\"2118\">Clash between unions and employers<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"2120\" data-end=\"2577\">This position does not coincide with that of the <strong data-start=\"2160\" data-end=\"2174\">unions<\/strong>, which are in favor of the minimum wage starting to be taxed. <strong data-start=\"2235\" data-end=\"2249\">CCOO and UGT<\/strong> have proposed an initial increase of <strong data-start=\"2287\" data-end=\"2295\">7.5%<\/strong>, to <strong data-start=\"2307\" data-end=\"2339\">1,273 euros gross per month<\/strong>, which would translate into a real increase of <strong data-start=\"2382\" data-end=\"2408\">2.7% in net terms<\/strong>, to <strong data-start=\"2420\" data-end=\"2442\">1,216 euros per month<\/strong> after taxes. Even so, both organizations have shown themselves open to revising their proposal after learning of the experts&#8217; report. <\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2579\" data-end=\"2846\"><strong data-start=\"2614\" data-end=\"2629\">Employers<\/strong> are on the opposite side. <strong data-start=\"2631\" data-end=\"2648\">CEOE and Cepyme<\/strong> propose a maximum increase of <strong data-start=\"2683\" data-end=\"2691\">1.5%<\/strong>, up to <strong data-start=\"2703\" data-end=\"2725\">1,202 euros gross<\/strong>, subject to respect for the <strong data-start=\"2758\" data-end=\"2796\">rules of absorption and compensation<\/strong> set forth in the <strong data-start=\"2813\" data-end=\"2845\">Workers&#8217; Statute<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"2848\" data-end=\"2904\"><strong data-start=\"2852\" data-end=\"2904\">Takeover reform, the main stumbling block<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"2906\" data-end=\"3115\">Beyond the amount of the <strong data-start=\"2933\" data-end=\"2948\">SMI in 2026<\/strong>, the main conflict centers on the <strong data-start=\"2989\" data-end=\"3042\">reform of the absorption and compensation rules<\/strong>, promoted by <strong data-start=\"3058\" data-end=\"3086\">Labor and the unions<\/strong> and rejected by the employers.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3117\" data-end=\"3487\">The president of the <strong data-start=\"3137\" data-end=\"3145\">CEOE<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"3147\" data-end=\"3168\">Antonio Garamendi<\/strong>, has warned that they will go to <strong data-start=\"3205\" data-end=\"3219\">court<\/strong> if the government limits that <strong data-start=\"3250\" data-end=\"3271\">salary bonuses<\/strong> -such as seniority or night work- absorb the increase in the minimum wage. In his opinion, this measure could lead to wage increases of up to <strong data-start=\"3419\" data-end=\"3435\">20% or 25%<\/strong> in some cases and break <strong data-start=\"3462\" data-end=\"3486\">collective bargaining agreements<\/strong>. <\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"3489\" data-end=\"3535\"><strong data-start=\"3493\" data-end=\"3535\">Increase of the SMI without tripartite agreement<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"3537\" data-end=\"3739\">The scenario of disagreement is not new. In recent years, the <strong data-start=\"3601\" data-end=\"3626\">Ministry of Labor<\/strong> has agreed <strong data-start=\"3654\" data-end=\"3672\">minimum wage<\/strong> increases only with the <strong data-start=\"3692\" data-end=\"3706\">unions<\/strong>, without the backing of the employers. <\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3741\" data-end=\"3993\">The last increase, approved in <strong data-start=\"3771\" data-end=\"3790\">February 2025<\/strong>, raised the SMI by <strong data-start=\"3808\" data-end=\"3816\">4.4%<\/strong>, to <strong data-start=\"3828\" data-end=\"3853\">1,184 euros per month<\/strong>, with retroactive effect from <strong data-start=\"3889\" data-end=\"3911\">January 1, 2025<\/strong>. It was the <strong data-start=\"3920\" data-end=\"3946\">fifth consecutive year<\/strong> in which the <strong data-start=\"3960\" data-end=\"3968\">CEOE<\/strong> was left out of the agreement. <\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3995\" data-end=\"4247\">Although the Government is not legally obliged to negotiate the <strong data-start=\"4056\" data-end=\"4063\">SMI<\/strong>, it must consult the social agents.
