{"id":148551,"date":"2026-01-07T10:43:23","date_gmt":"2026-01-07T09:43:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lavozdeibiza.com\/sin-categorizar\/aena-defends-increases-in-airport-taxes-to-finance-network-modernization\/"},"modified":"2026-01-07T10:43:23","modified_gmt":"2026-01-07T09:43:23","slug":"aena-defends-increases-in-airport-taxes-to-finance-network-modernization","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lavozdeibiza.com\/en\/current-news\/aena-defends-increases-in-airport-taxes-to-finance-network-modernization\/","title":{"rendered":"AENA defends increases in airport taxes to finance network modernization"},"content":{"rendered":"<p data-start=\"247\" data-end=\"573\">The President and CEO of Aena, <strong data-start=\"291\" data-end=\"309\">Maurici Lucena<\/strong>, has assured that the company will propose <strong data-start=\"350\" data-end=\"422\">increases in airport charges of less than 6% until 2031<\/strong>, following the authorization of the National Commission for Markets and Competition (CNMC) to apply a <strong data-start=\"526\" data-end=\"572\">6.44% increase as of March 2026<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"575\" data-end=\"885\">In statements to the newspaper <em data-start=\"602\" data-end=\"613\">Expansi\u00f3n<\/em>, reported by Europa Press, Lucena defended a policy of <strong data-start=\"678\" data-end=\"702\">tariff moderation<\/strong> for the period between 2027 and 2031, in a context of <strong data-start=\"768\" data-end=\"808\">strong growth in air traffic<\/strong> and results close to record highs for the airport operator.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h4><a href=\"https:\/\/lavozdeibiza.com\/en\/current-news\/son-sant-joan-at-13-degrees-workers-at-palma-airport-denounce-extreme-cold-due-to-aena-construction-work\/?swcfpc=1\">Son Sant Joan, at 13 degrees: workers at Palma airport denounce extreme cold due to AENA construction work<\/a><\/h4>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"887\" data-end=\"1342\">The top executive of Aena has stressed that the rates will have to increase &#8220;<strong data-start=\"960\" data-end=\"977\">moderately<\/strong>&#8221; in order to be able to face the <strong data-start=\"1002\" data-end=\"1060\">record investment plan of 12,888 million euros<\/strong> planned to modernize the Spanish airport network during the five-year period 2027-2031. Although he did not specify the exact increase, he pointed out that the annual rise could be <strong data-start=\"1239\" data-end=\"1262\">between 3% and 5%<\/strong>, as opposed to the freeze or even reduction applied during the last decade. <\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1344\" data-end=\"1614\">Lucena insisted that, despite these increases, airport tariffs in Spain will continue to be &#8220;<strong data-start=\"1452\" data-end=\"1487\">among the lowest in Europe<\/strong>&#8221; and assured that the company has &#8220;<strong data-start=\"1532\" data-end=\"1553\">plenty of room<\/strong>&#8221; to increase its level of indebtedness if necessary.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1616\" data-end=\"1979\">In this new scenario of greater investment and debt, Aena&#8217;s chairman considers it compatible to <strong data-start=\"1711\" data-end=\"1751\">maintain the current 80% pay out<\/strong>, to finance all the actions of the third Airport Regulation Document (DORA III) through a combination of capital and debt, as well as to <strong data-start=\"1899\" data-end=\"1941\">undertake some international operations<\/strong>, if the right conditions are met.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1981\" data-end=\"2376\">In relation to the conflict with Ryanair, Lucena pointed out that in Europe the consensus is spreading that an <strong data-start=\"2099\" data-end=\"2123\">excessive dependence<\/strong> on the Irish airline, &#8220;given its behavior&#8221;, is <strong data-start=\"2177\" data-end=\"2203\">not always positive<\/strong>. In this sense, he acknowledged that the recovery of the routes abandoned by the low cost airline will be slow and defended the <strong data-start=\"2326\" data-end=\"2375\">model of joint management between airports<\/strong>. <\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2378\" data-end=\"2657\">On the operational level, Aena closed <strong data-start=\"2412\" data-end=\"2462\">2025 with levels close to historical records<\/strong>, with forecasts of around <strong data-start=\"2496\" data-end=\"2525\">320 million passengers<\/strong> in the Spanish network and close to <strong data-start=\"2556\" data-end=\"2600\">100 million international tourists<\/strong>, far exceeding the figures prior to the pandemic.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2659\" data-end=\"3000\">For <strong data-start=\"2664\" data-end=\"2672\">2026<\/strong>, expectations point to a new all-time high, driven by airline seat scheduling and the consolidated recovery of the sector.
