The PSIB of Sant Josep has expressed its indignation at the «deplorable» state of the children’s playground on Avenida San Agustín, in Cala de Bou, considering that it presents an «unacceptable» situation for a public space intended for the use of minors.

According to the socialist party in a statement, the facilities have deficiencies that put the safety of children at risk, which, in their opinion, shows a prolonged lack of maintenance. Among the problems detected, the PSIB has pointed out the existence of broken and abandoned equipment, with dismantled and unusable play elements.

Also, the socialists have warned of the presence of graffiti and vandalism graffiti, accumulated dirt and rusted metal elements, circumstances that reinforce the feeling of abandonment of the enclosure. «A playground should be a meeting point for families and a safe space for minors, but in this case it has become a neglected place,» they have lamented.

From the PSIB consider that the state of the park conveys an image of «abandonment and neglect» by the Administration, and have called for immediate action to reverse the situation. In this regard, they have urged the City Council of Sant Josep to act quickly and establish regular maintenance protocols to prevent similar situations from being repeated in other parts of the municipality.

«The safety and well-being of children must be an absolute priority,» stressed the socialists, who are confident that urgent measures will be taken to recover this public space for the use of families in the area.

The Association of Entrepreneurs of the Bay of Cala de Bou asked the City Council of Sant Josep on Wednesday to act to stop the «irreparable damage to the image» of the neighborhood after the publication of an article in Diario de Ibiza in which the term «Cala de Bronx» was used, an expression they consider «sensationalist and stigmatizing». In its statement, the group regretted that such headlines directly harm businesses, hotels and families in the area, so they ask the Consistory «a clear institutional support» and the dissemination of objective security data to refute that image.

They claim to preserve the brand «Cala de Bou».

Bahía Negocis recalled that for years administrations, businesses and residents have worked to consolidate the tourist brand «Cala de Bou», and that «all that effort is compromised» when expressions are used that associate the neighborhood with crime. According to the association, the official denomination has made it possible to «differentiate» the area and build an identity of its own, a process that -they stress- cannot be «undermined by headlines that put impact before informative rigor».

No data indicating an increase in the number of robberies, they say

The business collective stated that «there is no data to prove» that Cala de Bou suffers more robberies or thefts than other parts of Ibiza. «Incidents of insecurity occur in different areas of the island and are not an exclusive problem or especially aggravated in our bay,» they point out. In this sense, they consider that generating social alarm «only fragments the community» and harms residents and economic activity.

A «quiet, family-oriented area in the midst of transformation».

The association defended that Cala de Bou is an area «in constant improvement«, with significant private investments in business renovation that have sought to raise the quality of supply. According to Bahia Negocis, these transformations have consolidated an economic fabric «capable of serving residents and visitors all year round», which, in its opinion, «does not correspond to the image disseminated in the article in question».

A message that seems to contrast with the one that the association itself transmitted two weeks ago, when it warned that the area could become a «ghost town» if urgent urban development actions were not carried out before the 2026 season. On that occasion they denounced closures of businesses and an «obsolete» urban environment (although they did not speak of insecurity specifically).

They demand a public position from the City Council

The entity requests two specific actions from the City Council:

  1. An official communiqué with real data on safety in the neighborhood.

  2. A public endorsement of the image of Cala de Bou as a safe and prosperous environment.

The collective made an «appeal to informative responsibility» to protect both economic activity and neighborhood pride. It also reiterated its willingness to meet with the Consistory to «collaborate in all necessary improvements» in the municipality.

The Portmany Bay Business Association warned that Cala de Bou could become a «ghost town» if the Sant Josep Town Hall does not take visible and urgent action before the 2026 season, after observing increasing closures in small businesses and an urban landscape that they consider «obsolete» despite the recent renovation of several hotels.

As explained in a statement after their meeting on the 17th with municipal officials, the association argued that tourists expect an environment in keeping with the image of Ibiza, but that «the deterioration of our streets destroys the reputation of the area», so they demand immediate interventions to avoid further closures.

Bahía Negocis insisted that it will reach out to the City Council, although it asked for «immediate» results. At the same time, he denounced the «serious economic damage» caused by the Waste Tax Ordinance, which «punishes responsibility» by not incorporating incentives for separating waste at source. The only possible bonus, 10% through ISO 14001 certification, was described as «unattainable» for small companies, due to the cost of consulting. For this reason, they demanded an immediate modification of the regulations with retroactive effect.

Changes in tourism

The association also noted a «critical» change in the visitor profile, with a decline in family tourism and a growth in the number of travelers arriving with a large part of their spending prepaid, which reduces consumption in local businesses and increases the pressure on family economies that keep their businesses open.

The group also requested municipal support to strengthen the digital presence and social media promotion of small establishments, so that their offer is visible and used by the new type of visitor they expect to receive in the summer of 2026.

Finally, Bahia Negocis criticized the deterioration of the public space and the lack of maintenance during the year, insisting that Cala de Bou should present a decent state for neighbors and businessmen, avoiding actions of «facelift» only before the summer season.

The City Council of Sant Josep has installed new signage in the streets Cala de Bou and Es Caló in order to reinforce road safety and remind drivers of the slow traffic lanes.

Although the legal speed limit in the area is 30 kilometers per hour, the municipality has chosen to set it symbolically at 29 km/h as a visual impact measure to draw the attention of drivers and encourage effective compliance with the regulations.

This action, as reported by the Consistory, seeks to increase road awareness and improve safety in a stretch that has been the scene of serious traffic incidents in recent months. The signs will remain installed until the end of the year, although future complementary actions along the same lines are not ruled out.

Two fatal accidents

The intervention takes place in one of the most accident-prone areas of the bay of Portmany, where there have been two fatal accidents in 2025 alone.

This is a road with narrow sidewalks, no physical barriers between pedestrians and vehicles, and where speed limits are frequently violated.

The first accident occurred on Sunday, May 18, when a 62-year-old tourist from Torrevieja was hit by a Dacia Dokker van while walking in the early morning.

The driver, a 30-year-old man of Peruvian nationality, was four times the legal alcohol limit and, according to official sources, fell asleep at the wheel. The vehicle hit signs and street furniture before ramming the pedestrian, who was trapped under the underbody of the van.

The SAMU 061 emergency services could only certify his death. The driver was arrested after the incident.

The second fatal hit-and-run occurred on September 7, when a Jeep Wrangler SUV, driven by an Irish citizen under the influence of nitrous oxide, left the roadway, drove onto the sidewalk and rammed into a group of pedestrians.

In the impact, one young woman died and two others were injured of varying degrees. The driver was arrested by the local police and charged with gross negligence manslaughter, serious injury and driving under the influence of drugs.

The presence of numerous witnesses and the cooperation of the public were key to identifying the perpetrator and reconstructing what happened.
