The Consell Insular de Ibiza has approved the tender for the first comprehensive cleaning, conservation and maintenance service for the island’s road network, an unprecedented initiative that represents a structural change in the management of the island’s roads. The contract has an investment of 3.75 million euros and will have an initial duration of one year, with the possibility of extension for a second year.

The new service will allow to act in a planned and continuous way on all the roads owned by the island, covering about 200 kilometers of roads and about 100,000 square meters of landscaped areas. The objective is to improve road safety, reinforce fire prevention and organize the vegetation on the margins, as well as to guarantee a more adequate maintenance of traffic circles, medians and green spaces.

Until now, these tasks were carried out on an ad hoc or fragmented basis, through isolated actions. With this contract, the Consell ensures that for the first time a stable and professionalized model of road maintenance is established, which will allow a more efficient and homogeneous management of the island’s road network.

The tender is divided into three separate lots. The first includes the cleaning and clearing of roadside verges, with systematic actions throughout the year. The second one introduces as a novelty the forest cleaning, as well as the pruning and felling of trees in stretches with forest masses, by means of specific campaigns previously planned. The third lot focuses on the integral maintenance of landscaped areas, with pruning, irrigation, phytosanitary treatments and aesthetic improvement of the spaces.

The service will have specialized and dedicated human resources, with a minimum of 21 professionals distributed among the three lots, as well as specific machinery, adapted vehicles and signaling and safety systems. The contract specifications also establish demanding criteria in terms of occupational risk prevention, personnel training and the use of approved protective equipment.

The City Council of Sant Josep de sa Talaia reports that it has reinforced during the last weeks the special works of street cleaning and maintenance of public space in different parts of the municipality, with actions that seek to improve the condition of streets, sidewalks and areas of daily use.

Deep cleaning in Platja d’en Bossa

One of the most outstanding interventions has been carried out in Platja d’en Bossa, where municipal teams have applied high-pressure steam cleaning to sidewalks and pedestrian areas. This system, used especially in high traffic areas, allows the removal of embedded dirt and renew the image of the environment.

The municipality reinforces street cleaning and maintenance with pressure cleaning, weeding and improvements in waste points to improve the condition of streets and public spaces.

Action on accumulations of earth in Cala de Bou

In Cala de Bou, the consistory has reinforced the street cleaning in Sant Agustí Avenue, where it has acted on the accumulation of soil in a parking lot. The intervention aims to improve accessibility and prevent these deposits from affecting mobility or drainage of the space.

Maintenance and clearing in Sant Jordi

The works have also reached Sant Jordi, where the informative stickers of the waste collection points in Sant Jordi street have been renewed, in order to keep the signage updated and facilitate the correct use of the containers. Likewise, the street of Vitrac, in the area of Can Raspall, has been cleared, a task aimed at keeping the margins of the street clear and reinforcing safety.

The workers of the company Valoriza, concessionaire of the street cleaning service in the municipality of Santa Eulària, have agreed in assembly to start an indefinite strike from next November 22. The decision, supported by the union Comisiones Obreras (CCOO), is due to what they describe as an unsustainable situation marked by continuous labor problems and deficiencies in the service.

The conflict is framed in a context of tensions between the City Council of Santa Eulària and the concessionaire company. In August, the consistory announced the opening of a sanctioning file against Valoriza for the breaches detected during the first six months of management of the waste collection, street cleaning and beach cleaning services.

The secretary of Union Action of CCOO, Ana Lopez, explained to Radio Ibiza that since the beginning of the new contract there have been accumulating incidents that directly affect the 63 workers on the payroll. Among them, she cited repeated errors in the payroll, the non-payment of a salary due in October and the poor state of the fleet of vehicles, since not all the new trucks foreseen in the contract have been incorporated.

The union representative stressed that this is not a «strategic» strike, but a necessary measure of pressure to open a real process of dialogue and negotiation with the company. The objective, she added, is to guarantee adequate working conditions and that workers receive their salaries in full and correctly.

The City Council of Ibiza has made Thursday night an intensive soapy cleaning in the neighborhood of Es Pratet to eliminate the strong odor that remained in the streets after the rain that fell during the day.

As happens with every storm, neighbors and merchants had expressed their discomfort with the smell of sewage that, as often happens in this neighborhood, spread through the area after the storm. The precipitation, which fell early in the morning, left waterlogged streets, debris and a persistent stench that again generated complaints among residents.

Following these protests, the City Council mobilized a cleaning operation with water and perfumed soap to neutralize odors and improve the condition of public roads.

The work was carried out throughout the day on the most affected streets, where the cleaning crews performed soapy buckets and removed debris accumulated by the dragging of rainwater.

The neighbors positively assessed the action, which they described as a quick and effective response. «It was a necessary cleanup. The smell was unbearable, but today the neighborhood smells clean,» commented a resident of the area.

The Ibiza Town Hall has opened an informative file to the company concessionaire of the waste collection and street cleaning service after detecting deficiencies in the provision of the service. The decision comes after in recent days there was a noticeable deterioration in the state of cleanliness of the streets of the municipality.

«The City Council maintains constant control over the cleaning concessionaire and we cannot allow situations like those of the last few days, where the service has not been provided as it should be, to be repeated. It is intolerable the state in which the municipality was«, warned the fourth deputy mayor and councilman of Environmental Management and Cleaning, Jordi Grivé.

Complaints for violations of the waste ordinance

In parallel, the Local Police of Ibiza has filed a totalof 16 complaints in just two days for violations of the municipal wasteordinance. These sanctions are part of the surveillance and control work that the police force performs continuously in different parts of the municipality.

Among the most outstanding actions is the denunciation of a woman caught leaving a mattress in Galicia Street, as well as the sanctioning of the manager of a beauty salon in Bisbe González Abarca Street for leaving hairdressing utensils on the public road.

During the day on Monday, the agents also located the improper dumping of several bulky objects, such as bottles, doors, oil bottles and other utensils, the abandonment of which is a violation of the ordinance. The municipal cleaning service immediately proceeded to remove this waste for proper management.

Citizen control and accountability

These actions are part of the regular inspection devices executed by the Local Police by order of headquarters, in order to ensure compliance with regulations and maintain in good condition public spaces.

The City Council reminds citizens that bulky objects, such as furniture or appliances, should be deposited only on the days and times established for each neighborhood. The winter schedule for the collection of tools is currently in force, so it is recommended to consult the updated calendar or contact the municipal service before removing any object to the public road, in order to avoid penalties.

Four tons of wipes block Ibiza’s sewage system https://lavozdeibiza.com/current-news/four-tons-of-wipes-block-ibizas-sewage-system/ Wed, 05 Nov 2025 15:36:35 +0000 https://lavozdeibiza.com/sin-categorizar/four-tons-of-wipes-block-ibizas-sewage-system/ Local authorities warn of the serious economic and environmental impact of flushing wipes and other waste down the toilet, a habit that costs the community hundreds of thousands of euros a year.

]]>
Ibiza’s sanitation infrastructure is under critical pressure due to improper use of toilets. In an alarming revelation, authorities have reported that four tons of waste were extracted from the sewage system in just one week.

Among the materials removed are mainly wipes, tampons and gauze, products that, according to the councilman beautification, Jordi Grivé Cardona, «should never be flushed down the toilet». These elements, unlike toilet paper, do not break down with water, but are compacted, forming real «mountains of fibers» that cause clogs of great magnitude in the sewage networks, said the City Council of Ibiza.

The hidden cost of traffic jams

The impact of this practice goes far beyond physical damage to pipelines. The blockages generated by this waste seriously affect the operation of pumping systems, increasing cleaning, repair and maintenance costs.

According to Grivé , the removal and management of this waste costs hundreds of thousands of euros a year, a cost that he describes as «unnecessary and avoidable». Added to this is the environmental impact derived from the dumping of non-biodegradable materials and the additional use of water and energy resources to solve the blockages.

«We need your collaboration for this,» emphasizes the City Council and reminds the remind the population that nothing but toilet paper should be flushed down the toilet. should be flushed down the toilet.

An appeal to citizen responsibility

In view of this situation, the local authorities have made an urgent appeal for citizen collaboration, appealing to individual responsibility to preserve the proper functioning of the sanitation system.

The message is clear and direct:

  1. To the toilet, toilet paper only.

  2. The rest (wipes, sanitary napkins, tampons, rags), to the wastebasket.

Tourist rental housing workers will earn the same as in the hotel industry https://lavozdeibiza.com/current-news/tourist-rental-housing-workers-will-earn-the-same-as-in-the-hotel-industry/ Thu, 07 Nov 2024 13:26:21 +0000 https://lavozdeibiza.com/sin-categorizar/2024/11/07/tourist-rental-housing-workers-will-earn-the-same-as-in-the-hotel-industry/ According to UGT, this should already be the case according to the collective bargaining agreement, but it is not respected. It would imply a 50% increase in the salary of some workers, such as those in the cleaning sector.

]]>
From 2025, workers in tourist rental housing will earn the same salary as their peers in hotels. For some people, this could mean an increase of up to 50% in salary. Next year, the UGT will demand in the negotiation of the Hotel and Catering agreement the participation of an employer by the holiday rental associations of the Balearic Islands. The union will demand that the conditions of the agreement also apply to workers engaged in cleaning, gardening or maintenance of tourist accommodation. This will have an economic impact on both homeowners and cleaning companies. This has been announced by José García Relucio, general secretary of the federation of Services of UGT in the Balearic Islands, in declarations granted to Diario de Mallorca. The union leader has pointed out that it is «a battle won«, since the collective agreement already contemplates the «tourist holiday homes«, although this point was not fulfilled. In fact, García Relucio has pointed out that this was already contemplated for a decade in collective agreements, but that the exponential growth of tourist homes has motivated the union to put the focus on respecting the rule. According to UGT representatives, the main impact of this measure has to do with the fact that wages in the cleaning sector are far below what hotel workers earn. «Tourist rentals decorate their homes either with companies or with self-employed or uninsured cleaning women to whom they pay the minimum wage, which constitutes a breach of the regulations that harms these workers, and the coffers of Social Security, as well as incurring unfair competition,» UGT has denounced on its website.

Values

Workers in the cleaning sector could earn 50% more if they are paid according to what is charged in the hotel sector. Holiday homes would fall under level C of the agreement (the same as one-star hotels). At this level, a chambermaid earns a gross salary of 2,027 euros per month. On the other hand, today the Cleaning agreement pays 1,387 euros per month. For those who hire independent professionals and not a cleaning company, the value of the agreement is even lower: 1,323 euros gross per month.
