La entrada Good news: forest fires in Ibiza and Formentera are down significantly se publicó primero en La Voz De Ibiza.
]]>During the year, 82 forest fires were recorded throughout the archipelago, with a total area affected of 17.1 hectares, of which 13.4 hectares corresponded to treeless vegetation and 3.7 hectares to wooded vegetation.
These figures are well below the average of the last ten years (88 fires and 148 hectares burned annually), as highlighted by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Natural Environment on Friday.
By islands, Mallorca concentrates 48 percent of the ignitions, with 39 forest fires, followed by Ibiza, with 26 fires (32 percent of the total). Menorca, with nine fires (11 percent), and Formentera, with eight (10 percent), are the islands with the fewest fires recorded during the year.
Likewise, most of the fires occurred during the high danger season, between May 1 and October 15, when 60 fires were recorded, affecting 15.8 hectares. These fires represent 97 percent of the total area burned during the entire year.
In terms of the severity of the claims, only one fire has reached the level of IGP1, due to its proximity to an urban center. It is the fire of sa Talaia de Sant Antoni de Portmany, on July 30, which remained an outburst.
In the absence of final investigations, 96 percent of the forest fires have been caused by human activity, either by negligence, accidents or intentional acts, while only 4 percent have had a natural origin, mainly by lightning.
The Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Natural Environment, Joan Simonet, who thanked the work and dedication of all the staff of the inter-island forest fire operation (OIIF), stressed that «these data, largely, and also taking into account the luck factor, are the result of constant work in awareness, prevention, coordination and rapid response to forest fires».
However, he warned against «relaxing» because the current climate change context increases the danger year after year.
Likewise, Simonet has valued the nearly 500 hectares carried out this year by the Conselleria for the prevention of forest fires. «The fires are extinguished during the winter, so prevention work, such as forest belts, are one of the main lines of action of the Government,» he stressed.
In this regard, he recalled that in December the new call for aid for the prevention of forest fires (PIFO) and the active management of forests for the years 2025 and 2026 was published.
The resolution approves an initial endowment of 1.5 million euros for the 2025 call, with the possibility of an additional increase if necessary.
According to Simonet, this line of subsidies allows owners and managers of forest estates to carry out actions that contribute to reducing the danger of fires and restoring the damage caused by natural phenomena.
He also called for co-responsibility, stressing that «it is essential» to continue encouraging forest owners, land managers and other administrations to continue working together in fire prevention and active landscape management, «key to have more resilient territories in the face of fire».
For her part, the general director of Natural Environment and Forest Management, Anna Torres, considered it «fundamental» to remember that, although the most dangerous and extensive fires usually occur during the high danger season, the possibility of a forest fire exists throughout the year.
For this reason, he pointed out, it is essential to have an inter-island operation tailored to the characteristics of the Balearic Islands, as well as to insist on the importance of self-protection, prevention, active forest management and public awareness, especially in urban-forestal interface areas.

]]>According to the daily map of fire risk published on the portal Alertafoc of the Balearic Government, all the municipalities of Ibiza appear today in red color, corresponding to Alert Foc 4, with the only exception of Sant Joan de Labritja, which remains in Alert Foc 2, of moderate or high risk; the island of Formentera also appears in this intermediate level. In all cases, the authorities insist on the need to take extreme precautions and to consult the current regulations before any activity involving the use of fire in rural areas.
The Foc 4 Alert category is declared when the meteorological risk of forest fire is «very high or extreme», which automatically activates additional restrictions with respect to other levels: from the prohibition to light fires on any forest land to the temporary suspension of authorizations to burn stubble, permanent pastures, pruning and forestry debris.
Today, Monday, November 24, the maximum forest fire danger level in Eivissal is #AlertaFoc4.

With the maximum level in force, it is strictly forbidden to light fires in forest areas, including pine forests and scrubland on the island, due to the high risk that any spark or ignition could turn into a large fire. This restriction also extends to recreational areas, camping areas and rest areas of the road network, even in the points specifically designated for barbecues in periods of lower risk.
The Regional Ministry reminds that, while the Foc 4 Alert is maintained, all previously granted authorizations for agricultural burning are suspended, both for stubble and for permanent pastures and pruning or silvicultural residues.
Another key measure is the ban on machinery and equipment that can generate sparks, deflagrations or electrical discharges on forest land and in a 400-meter band around it. Their use is only allowed if expressly authorized by the competent body or if they are essential for extinguishing fires, in accordance with the Govern’s fire regulations.
It is also prohibited the introduction and use of pyrotechnic material in the vicinity of the forest, except in urban areas located more than 500 meters from the forest area. The regulation also reminds that throwing cigarette butts, burning objects or any material likely to cause a fire is a serious offense, especially on days with maximum alert level.
The authorities stress that public cooperation is essential to prevent new outbreaks and protect both the natural environment and the safety of residents and visitors. The Balearic Executive insists that, in adverse weather conditions such as today, a minimum carelessness can trigger a fire of great magnitude.

]]>According to current regulations, all activities that could generate sparks or fire are prohibited, including the burning of plant debris, due to adverse weather conditions. These include wind gusts of up to 70 km/h and low humidity, which significantly increase the possibility of ignitions.
The alert map issued by the Govern de les Illes Balears places the Pitiusas in Alert Foc 3 level, which implies the suspension of all authorizations for the use of fire, as well as the need to take extreme precautions. This level of alert is usual in periods of high danger, which in Ibiza extends from April 1 to October 15, but this time it has been activated outside that range due to the incidence of the squall Herminia.

The Bombers d’Eivissa, through their social networks, have insisted on the need to avoid outdoor activities that may pose a risk of fire. Among their advice they highlight:

In addition to the risk of forest fires, squall Herminia is generating adverse maritime conditions, with waves of up to 4 meters and southwest winds of force 7. Although maritime connections in Ibiza and Formentera remain operational, cancellations are not ruled out if conditions worsen.
The situation could become more complicated in the coming hours, with Herminia expected to evolve into an Isolated High Level Depression (DANA) by mid-week, intensifying the adverse phenomena in the archipelago. Local authorities continue to monitor the development of the storm and issue updates to ensure the safety of residents and tourists.

]]>In Ibiza, 22 forest fires were recorded, reaching a total burned area of 3.19 hectares. Of these, 1.53 hectares corresponded to wooded areas, while 1.66 hectares were considered treeless. For its part, Formentera reported six fires affecting 0.29 hectares, with 0.27 hectares of wooded areas and 0.02 hectares of treeless areas.
The rest of the islands also presented alarming figures. In Menorca, 8.22 hectares burned in five fires, while in Mallorca there were fires of great magnitude, such as s’Albufera and Andratx, which consumed more than 100 and 70 hectares respectively, totaling 306.97 hectares burned.
The Government of the Balearic Islands insists on the importance of adopting preventive measures to avoid forest fires, especially in the most vulnerable times of the year.
The main recommendations include avoiding the use of fire in wooded areas during periods of high temperatures, keeping the land clear of dry vegetation that could act as fuel, and respecting local regulations on activities that could generate fire risks.
Citizen collaboration is also crucial in the fight against fires. In the event of any suspicious activity or a fire outbreak, the population is urged to contact the 112 emergency service immediately so that teams can act quickly. With a total of 318.7 hectares affected, local authorities reiterate the importance of prevention, as the impact of fires not only affects the islands’ biodiversity, but also their environmental sustainability and quality of life.

]]>La entrada Alert 3 for fire risk in Ibiza and Formentera se publicó primero en La Voz De Ibiza.
]]>This alert is established on a scale of 1 to 4. According to the Forest Management Service, in the case of level 3, it is a «formal activation of weather warnings for FMA (winds, maximum temperatures, heat waves and / or storms), regardless of the risk of forest fire from AEMET, or when there are unique circumstances from the hazard analysis». This entails restrictions, such as the impossibility of burning in forest areas, although it is allowed to do so if distance is kept with this type of land, and taking precautionary measures.
The alert level is based on information from AEMET (especially wind speed and precipitation, and considering orange or red alerts for adverse phenomena). It also considers daily hazard analysis carried out by the Forest Management Service (General Directorate of Natural Environment and Forest Management) and/or the Forest Fire Communications Center (CCIF). It is worth remembering that for today, originally, AEMET had warned an orange alert level in Ibiza and Formentera, which was later lowered to yellow, for strong winds of up to 90 km/h in some areas and waves that could reach 4 meters.

Meanwhile, in Formentera, the fires have burned 0.29 hectares, with 0.27 hectares of wooded area and 0.02 of treed land. These figures place the Pitiusas as the islands with the smallest area affected by fires in the Balearic Islands, compared to the 236.97 hectares burned in Mallorca and 8.22 in Menorca. However, each hectare lost in a territory as limited as the Pitiusas represents a significant blow to its fragile ecosystem.
Throughout the year, prevention work has been intensified in Ibiza and Formentera, especially in urban areas near forest areas. The Conselleria has emphasized the importance of identifying elements vulnerable to fire around homes, a recommendation especially relevant in this month, when milder temperatures facilitate the work of cleaning and adequacy. Joan Simonet, head of the department, recalled that prevention remains the best tool to avoid natural tragedies that not only affect the environment, but also local communities.
