]]>The action is part of the Libera project, promoted by SEO/BirdLife and Ecoembes, which analyzes the type, quantity and volume of abandoned waste to understand its origin and prevent its environmental impact, a problem that directly affects natural areas of islands such as Ibiza.
Among the most common types of waste found in the Balearic Islands are beverage cans, glass bottles and jars and plastic bottles, a common typology in natural areas with human presence. These data show the pressure on the natural environment, also in island territories such as Ibiza, where landscape conservation is key.
At the national level, the results of this ninth edition of the Libera project reflect a similar pattern. Cigarette butts, beverage cans and small plastic fragments were the most commonly found waste in Spain as a whole, where 44,065 pieces of waste were characterized in fields, forests and woodlands.
The campaign has had the involvement of public administrations, schools, companies and associations of the archipelago. In the case of Ibiza, the participation of the CEIP Sant Antoni, which joined in the tasks of collecting and characterizing waste as part of its environmental awareness work, has stood out.
Along with schools, associations such as the Red Cross have also collaborated in the organization of collection points in different municipalities, reinforcing the role of environmental volunteering in the fight against litter in the Balearic Islands.
As in previous editions, the participating groups have mainly used the mobile application ‘Basuraleza’, a tool that allows them to register the waste found in nature, access environmental training and participate in volunteer initiatives at the national level.
For those who have opted for more technical analysis, the ‘e-Litter’ application has also been available, oriented to the detailed registration of waste in terrestrial ecosystems. All the information collected is integrated into the databases of the Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge and feeds the Garbage Barometer, the annual report that analyzes the evolution of this environmental problem.

]]>La entrada The transfer of garbage from Ibiza to Mallorca is getting closer: when does it start? se publicó primero en La Voz De Ibiza.
]]>Last Tuesday, the Balearic Parliament has validated the decree of strategic projects, a rule that will allow to legally fit the plan. Thus, it shields the legal coverage of the transfer and configures this movement of the Ibizan garbage as an exceptional measure, with a previous pilot test and an aid of 50 million to the Consell de Mallorca.
This initiative had been left up in the air last September, when the Vox party rejected the first draft of the decree, paralyzing the technical work already started. However, after weeks of negotiation, PP and Vox have reached an agreement that allows its processing as a bill.
The unblocking of regulations has been key for the Consell de Mallorca to resume negotiations with Ibiza and speed up the formalization of the agreement between both institutions.
The plan foresees a compensation of 50 million euros, which the Balearic Government will pay to Mallorca over a period of ten years, at a rate of five million euros per year. This figure seeks to compensate the receiving island for the costs derived from the transport and incineration of waste from the Pitiusas.
The initial objective was to launch a pilot test between October and November 2024, once the tourist season was over. In May, the Consell de Ibiza, the Consell de Mallorca and the Govern Balear reached a political pre-agreement to activate the transfer of waste, given the situation of exhaustion of the Pitiusan landfill.
The project seeks to provide an immediate solution to a problem that has been dragging on for years. Currently, Ca na Putxa receives more than 90,000 tons of garbage per year, and its storage capacity is close to the limit. The Consell de Ibiza had warned of the need to find an urgent solution to avoid an environmental crisis.
As Diario de Mallorca advanced, the Consell mallorquín is working in parallel on a 10% reduction in the municipal solid waste (MSW) tariff to compensate for the impact of the increase in volume coming from Ibiza. This adjustment will be applied once the final agreement between the parties has been formalized.
The operation is strongly opposed by the PSIB and Més per Mallorca. The socialist spokeswoman in the Consell, Catalina Cladera, denounced that «the transfers must be done in a minimum amount and with environmental guarantees, both in terms of incineration and mobility issues».
Cladera also criticized the attitude of the Consell de Ibiza for not having advanced in sustainable management policies: «Let them do their homework and minimize the amounts of waste that will come».
From Més per Mallorca, spokesperson Catalina Inés Perelló accused the Ibizan authorities of inaction: «Ibiza should have done its job. It cannot be that, as an immediate solution, we receive waste from others. They have had to look for a decree law to justify it».

]]>«We are very pleased that today in the Consell de Govern has approved the decree that was taken a few weeks ago in Parliament. We understand that we have an agreement that gives us the viability to be able to transport waste to the island of Mallorca, to the Tirme plant, so that it can be incinerated there,» said Andrés.
The conseller explained that they are already working in coordination with the Consell de Mallorca to finalize the agreement that will regulate the transfer of waste between the two islands.
«We are still in contact with the Consell de Mallorca to finish defining the agreement that we have to have the two councils, who are the ones who have the competences in waste, both us here in Eivissa and them there in Mallorca,» Andres recalled.
He is confident that this document will be defined «in a few weeks».
Following the approval of the decree, the most immediate task is to finalize three key elements:
Tons of waste to be sent to Mallorca.
Transfer costs, including shipping, transportation companies and operational adjustments.
The associated logistics, which must be coordinated with the shipping companies and the island concessionaire.
«We have to adjust the amount of tons that we will have to transport, the costs that we will have for this transfer, for the shipping companies, for the transport companies and also for our concessionaire,» he detailed.
Once the parameters of the transfer have been established, a one-year pilot test will begin to analyze the economic, environmental and operational impact of sending waste to Mallorca.
The waste concessionaire of Eivissa will be responsible for adapting the system during this experimental phase. «We hope that it will last more or less a year, to see what are the consequences or the results we have of this transfer and that there is no inconvenience to the citizens of Eivissa,» said Andres.

]]>During these actions, the agents have carried out a specific surveillance in clean points, streets with repeated irregular dumping and historic neighborhoods, detecting a significant increase in deposits after hours and abandonment of bulky objects. Only in the last two days have been processed

On the same day, the agents located gas cylinders, doors, oil bottles and other utensils irregularly deposited in the street. The municipal cleaning service had to proceed to their removal and proper management, given the danger and negative impact of this waste on the urban environment.
The City Council recalls that last week, in a device deployed in the Marina and Dalt Vila, the Local Police reported three people for violations related to coexistence and misuse of public space. In addition, a specific control in the Obispo Huix street ended with five sanctions for improper dumping, and in Menorca street the person responsible for leaving furniture outside the authorized day and time was identified.
The Consistory stresses that these interventions are part of the ordinary operations that are being reinforced in view of the increase in waste infractions. It also recalls that

]]>This will determine the model of «finalist treatment of non-hazardous waste on the island of Ibiza«, given the proximity of the end of the useful life of the ca na Putxa landfill, which, according to the latest assessment of the technicians, is estimated at just over 6 years.
The Sectorial Master Plan for the Prevention and Management of Non-Hazardous Waste on the island of Eivissa is the territorial planning instrument whose purpose is to «regulate the planning, projection, execution and management of the general infrastructure, equipment and service systems necessary for the management of non-hazardous waste, define the waste prevention and management model for the island of Eivissa, establish objectives adapted to current regulations and program the actions and instruments necessary for the development of the Plan».
As reported, in the session of February 7, the Executive Council of the Consell Insular de Ibiza «has agreed to initiate a participatory process to determine the final treatment model for non-hazardous waste from Ibiza«.
This process is divided into two phases: one aimed at the general public and the other aimed at those members of the public who are considered interested persons in accordance with the aforementioned regulations. «Said persons will be determined in the agreement of the Executive Council and will constitute a working group that will hold joint sessions.»
From the Consell have detailed that the initiative, driven by the Department of Environmental Management , aims to define a «new model of finalist treatment of waste from the treatment plant waste, since the model that defines the current plan, deposit in the controlled landfill of Ca na Putxa, has two major limitations, so it is expected to put. This decision will condition the management of waste on the island of Eivissa in the long term and will have important environmental, social and economic repercussions that will directly affect all citizens».
«All members of the public have the right to participate through the formulation of comments or allegations, expressing their observations and opinions when all options are open and before final decisions are made. To exercise this right, the information and documentation currently available on the alternatives under analysis is made available to the public, without prejudice to other documentation that may be incorporated during the process,» they state.
Public participation will begin with the consultation of the documentation and the creation of a consultation mailbox ([email protected]). Subsequently, a survey will be enabled and the mailbox will be maintained for suggestions and comments for a period of one month.
At the time, from the consistory had highlighted the «breadth of the study that was commissioned in 2019, whose data were subsequently updated by an alternative study commissioned by the neighbors of the landfill. In any case, they are currently working on a methodology that allows, thanks to the data already available to the Consell de Ibiza and other administrations such as the Balearic Government and the municipalities, to update and conclude these studies to extract the most useful and updated information possible. This methodology will be exposed and submitted to a period of public participation, always ensuring transparency and strict compliance with the law».
The Balearic Government has been optimistic about the possibility of resolving the conflict between the Consell de Ibiza and the Consell de Mallorca in a short time. However, so far, Mallorca has refused to receive Ibiza’s waste for incineration at Son Reus, leaving a viable solution to the problem up in the air.
The Consell de Ibiza is committed to transferring part of the waste to the incinerator of Son Reus, in Mallorca, and is even proposing to carry out pilot tests to demonstrate that the measure is feasible and safe. However, the Consell de Mallorca has so far rejected this option, closing the door to any negotiation on the issue.
During the Intermunicipal Conference of the PP on the island, the president of the Government, Marga Prohens, assured that the autonomous Executive is looking for a solution «that is good for everyone» and that it must be agreed between the Consell de Ibiza and the Consell de Mallorca.
The spokesman of the Executive, Antoni Costa, pointed out in the last press conference after the Consell de Govern that the solution must come from the island institutions themselves.
Costa has recognized that the situation in Ibiza is «very serious» and that the landfill has an «expiration date», so it is urgent to find a viable solution. However, the Govern has chosen not to intervene directly, urging both councils to reach an agreement.
The Platform ¡Hay Soluciones! has called for an urgent solution to prevent the island from running out of space for its garbage. Their proposal is clear: rule out the construction of an incinerator in Ibiza and move the rejection fraction to Mallorca, where there is an infrastructure already prepared for it.

Pruning waste in common containers.
On the website of the Port Authority of the Balearics published on May 6th that it has renewed «part of its urban furniture in the port of Ibiza with the incorporation of 75 new litter garbage cans made from recycled material extracted from the sea«.
Specifically, these containers have been created from old disused fishing nets.
The action is contemplated within the cleaning and maintenance service that Serveo has in the ports of Ibiza and La Savina.
While the company that has been in charge of manufacturing the garbage cans with recycled material has been Fábregas.
«The renovation of this urban furniture is a commitment of the port agency for the circular economy and environmental awareness. In addition, it is an action that is part of the port-city integration», have argued from the APB.
This situation has been documented by the workers with photos and videos, which are in the possession of this media.
Company sources have told La Voz de Ibiza that they are certified by ISO 14001 on environmental management, which implies «frequent controls and audits».
On the other hand, Serveo subcontracts to a company «which is an expert ad hoc in waste treatment. In the case of the port of Ibiza, they have confirmed to La Voz de Ibiza that there is a contracted company «that is dedicated to waste management, collection and classification of waste».
Serveo has refused to reveal the identity of this collaborating company.
«This complaint does not correspond to reality,» said sources from the contracting company. However, the workers support their allegations with evidence. «We collect waste and throw it in the black bin: plastics, bottles, tree pruning, etc…«.
For its part, the company promotes itself as a signatory of the United Nations Global Compact, «consolidating our commitment to a sustainable business model that addresses global challenges.
United Nations Global Compact«consolidating our commitment to a sustainable business model that addresses global challenges».The organization also «integrates the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into the company’s strategy to guarantee that
in our growth we contribute to the 2030 Agenda and move forward in a sustainable manner.»
In addition, they say they put the «focus on decarbonization, operational efficiency, cleaner and healthier services, driving innovation. We work every day on promoting equality and safe environments, on hiring vulnerable groups, as well as on a governance model that integrates our entire supply chain. Our track record is backed by solid management systems in health and safety, quality, lean management and environment.
We also hold the SGE-21 certification, which accredits us as an ethical and socially responsible organization, and the efr certification, which endorses us as a conciliatory, egalitarian and inclusive company».
All this situation unveiled by La Voz de Ibiza in the APB facilities goes against the «action plan for the implementation of the 2030 Agenda towards a Spanish Strategy for Sustainable Development» promoted by the Government of Spain.
Among the environmental challenges, it states that «Spain is very vulnerable to climate change and therefore must work on mitigating the risks and adapting to it».
To this end, it seeks to reduce the negative environmental impact of cities«paying special attention to air quality and waste management«, among other points.
For this reason, the «improvement of the management systems for this type of waste» is proposed .
«The most important challenge in relation to the current data is the adoption of policies to drive towards a circular economy that raises awareness among the different agents generating waste, of the interest, not only from an environmental point of view but also from an economic point of view, of preventing the generation of waste and promoting recycling, recovery and reuse strategies,» states the document agreed with the rest of the autonomous communities.
«At the municipal level, the challenge is also to advance and improve the management of this waste, integrating these policies and measures in circular economy strategies.
Despite the progress made, it is necessary to advance and improve the behavior of the actors in the monitoring and control measures, as well as in the incorporation of the culture and environmental management requirements of to business organizations, including the awareness of workers and managers and public administrations», it states.
