The president of the Govern, Marga Prohens, has vindicated the commitment of her Executive to«continue working for stability and tranquility» in 2026, focusing on access to housing, in her New Year’s Eve institutional speech.

This was highlighted by the leader of the Executive in her message to the citizens, broadcast this Tuesday on IB3 and from Menorca, specifically from Son Quart, with the aim of highlighting the Minorcan countryside and the agricultural activity of the Islands.

Thus began the speech of the president, who recognized the work of farmers, ranchers and fishermen, also putting in value the local product and the role of the primary sector as an economic activity that «must be viable and profitable.

«A field and an agricultural activity that we want to last, that can face the challenge of climate change, that are part not only of our history, but also of our future,» he stressed, while claiming the importance of defending the fisheries sector before Europe.

In this sense, he stressed that the Govern is working on a new agricultural law, based on dialogue with the sector, to ensure the profitability of agricultural activity and generational replacement. A law that, in his opinion, should be one of the major milestones of next year.

During her speech, the president defended that the Government has faced these two and a half years of legislature «without looking the other way» in the face of problems, «assuming with responsibility complex challenges» such as access to housing, the transformation of the economic model, population growth or the migration crisis.

Thus, he focused on housing, remarking that the Executive is aware of the«great concern» that is access to housing and of «the great efforts that many families are making to access their home and the difficulties of young people to be able to emancipate themselves and start their life project».

«The year that begins will be the year in which the construction of more public housing in the history of our community will begin. Yes, public housing for the people here, now yes, for the people here,» he stressed.

The economic model

On the other hand, he referred to the transformation of the economic model within the Sustainability Pact. «Citizens do not count their lives in terms of legislatures; that is why it is necessary to deal with day-to-day problems, but also to plan and transform in order to know which islands we want to leave to our children«, he said.

In the area of public services, Prohens highlighted improvements in education, health and social services, with more resources, more professionals and a commitment to excellence, the reduction of waiting lists and territorial equity.

He also stressed that the Government is working to protect women, for equality and for the reconciliation of work and family life.

The Govern’s priority for 2026, he said, is to have «more housing for local people, more and better public services and to transform the model, from growing in volume to growing in value».

During the speech, he referred to several claims of the Govern, including a fair regional funding system that takes into account the insularity and a «decisive response» of the Government of Spain and Europe to the migration crisis.

According to Prohens, the year ends with a national political climate «marked by the degradation of some of the main institutions» and by the «worst face of politics», in reference to machismo and corruption.

Finally, he thanked the work of all the professionals of the emergency services in the face of episodes such as the floods of this autumn in Ibiza and remembered the people who were affected.

«In this coming year 2026, the Govern will continue to govern and work for stability and tranquility, as we have been doing in these two and a half years, to respond to all the challenges exposed with humility and closeness, aware that much remains to be done,» he concluded.

The president of the Balearic Government, Marga Prohens, has congratulated Christmas on Tuesday with a message posted on social networks in which she combines a fragment of a song by the Mallorcan musician Jaume Anglada and an illustration set in the historic center of Palma, with the Mediterranean and the Seu as a backdrop.

In a message posted on his official account of X, Prohens has quoted part of the lyrics of the song Fa un fred de neu, by the Mallorcan singer Jaume Anglada, who last August was run over in Palma and remained hospitalized for more than a month, an episode that generated a broad show of social support in the Balearic Islands.

«The Mediterranean in the background, the bells of La Seu. Today the son of the Mother of God will be born. «The President of the Autonomous Executive wrote, accompanying the text with a Christmas image.

A message focused on reunion and care

The leader of the Govern explained that the musical fragment chosen reminds her «more than ever what really matters», in reference to the importance of mutual care, closeness and reunion during these important dates of the Christmas calendar.

According to Prohens, Christmas is a time to appreciate «how lucky we are to have each other» and the need to «take care of each other», in a context marked by the personal and collective events of the last year in the islands .

A Christmas illustration in front of Llotja de Palma

The Christmas message of the President of the Government has been distributed together with an illustration by the artist Alex Ollers, which represents the birth of Jesus located in front of the Llotja de Palma, with the cathedral as a backdrop, in a composition that mixes religious tradition and historical heritage.

Prohens stressed that the work «transforms the great Gothic temple into a nativity scene», inviting us to stop and observe with a different look the closest and everyday spaces of the urban landscape of Palma.

«It invites us to stop for a moment and look with fresh eyes at what is closest to us,» the president added in her message.

Institutional messages for Christmas in the Balearic Islands and at the national level

The Christmas greeting concluded with an institutional wish: «May this Christmas be a time of peace and illusion, Merry Christmas to all», said Prohens in her publication.

Also the president of the Congress of Deputies and secretary general of the PSIB, Francina Armengol, has spread her Christmas greetings through social networks. In her message, Armengol has wished «moments of joy, calm and reunion», accompanied by a video with the institutional greeting of the lower house.

The socialist leader closed her message with a greeting of «Happy Holidays» in Spanish, Catalan, Basque and Galician, in a publication also disseminated through X.

The president of the Balearic Government, Marga Prohens, has once again called on the central government for a «forceful response» to the «unsustainable» situation that, in her opinion, the Balearic Islands are going through as a result of the migratory crisis.

In a message spread on social networks and collected by Europa Press, the leader of the autonomous Executive has regretted that «while some still defend in the Islands the migratory policies of Sanchez and deny its call effect, the route of irregular immigration that grows the most is the route between Algeria and the Balearic Islands».

Prohens’ statements come after it became known that more than 7,295 irregular immigrants have arrived in the Balearic Islands so far this year, a figure that once again places the autonomous community at the center of the migration debate.

Faced with this scenario, the president of the Govern insisted on the need for a change in the state and European strategy. «I once again call for a drastic change in migration policy, more resources for the protection of our borders and to combat mafias, to put an end to call effect policies and to request the activation of Frontex to Europe,» she concluded.

The Balearic Executive warns of the pressure that this situation generates on reception resources and public services, and reiterates its request for greater involvement of the central government and the European Union to address the increase in arrivals via the western Mediterranean route.

The left votes against.

The Balearic Parliament has approved this Monday a non-legislative proposal with which praises the figure of María Corina Machado, whom it considers worthy of the Nobel Peace Prize for her commitment to democracy in Venezuela. The proposal has gone ahead with the votes of PP and Vox, while MÉS per Mallorca, Més per Menorca and PSIB have voted against.

On the same day that the Nobel Peace Prize was awarded in Oslo -an event in which Machado was not present-, the autonomous Chamber wanted to vindicate her work, underlining that, despite the political persecution in her country, «she has not abandoned Venezuelans and has shown that the peaceful struggle is stronger than any dictatorship».

«She is a brave, firm and determined woman, who represents the hope of a people subjected to a corrupt and violent regime», defended Cristina Gil, deputy of the PP, in her speech before the Institutional Affairs Committee of the Parliament.

The initiative also urges the central government to publicly recognize Machado and support her candidacy for the Nobel Prize. In their argumentation, the signatory parties highlight her «tireless work» in favor of democratic rights and her role in the search for a peaceful transition in Venezuela.

Prohens adds to the recognition: «Pain has become strength».

The president of the Balearic Government, Marga Prohens, also wanted to express her support for Machado through the social network X. In a message published on Monday, she expressed her admiration for the opposition leader, stating that «she has turned the pain of her country into a serene, courageous and persevering force«.

«Today, from the Balearic Islands, we feel close to those who are resisting there, to those who have had to leave and to those who have suffered persecution», said Prohens, who also pointed out that the phrase pronounced by Machado’s daughter during the Nobel Prize award ceremony –«Venezuela will breathe again«- sums up the longing of millions of people.

The leader of the Autonomous Executive called for the award to serve as «an embrace to the Venezuelan people» and as a global reminder that one should not be indifferent to injustice.

Political division in the Parliament

The parliamentary session has been marked by ideological division. While the PP and Vox have supported the proposal on María Corina Machado, the progressive parties have expressed their rejection.

«Not a single congratulations, not a single gesture of support from the Government of Spain. Not even the institutional respect that a figure like him deserves», lamented Cristina Gil.

In the same commission, the Parliament has rejected two proposals of the PSIB, one on the condemnation of hate speeches and another on democratic memory. Both were knocked down with the votes of PP and Vox.

Prohens’ day will begin at 09.00 hours, when she will participate in a joint meeting of the Islands Intergroup of the CoR and the Searica Intergroup of the European Parliament, focused on seas, rivers, islands and coastal areas. The meeting will be held in room JDE 52 of the Jacques Delors building, where the president will explain the need to provide island territories with specific tools to face the challenges arising from tourism pressure and climate change.

The President of the Govern, Marga Prohenshas asked the Spanish Government for more means and more personnel for the National Police in the archipelago.

This is what he claimed at the XII National Congress of the Unified Police Union (SUP) on Tuesday, in which he defended that the Govern «has complied», for example, with the creation of the regional tax deduction for the National Police and the Civil Guard.

«From the Balearic Islands we will continue to strongly claim that we must protect those who protect us, take care of those who take care of everyone,» said Prohens, stressing that her Executive will continue to demand material and human resources, more presence, more resources and more support.

On the migration issue, he has reproached those who «call the Government unsupportive» when the Balearic Islands hosts more than 720 unaccompanied migrant minors, with centers at 1,000 percent of their capacity.

«That is why I sent a letter to the President of the Government formally requesting the activation of Frontex and, of course, to strengthen our security forces and corps in the Balearic Islands, to cover these more than 400 vacancies to protect our borders and combat mafias,» he said.

The president insisted that the migration policy cannot be based on managing the reception «in distribution quotas», but must be based on the protection of borders and the fight against mafias.

Faced with this situation, Prohens has put in value the appointment last July of the sub-inspector Manuel Pavón as the new director general of Immigration. «Who better than a national police officer who has worked in the field,» he said, while criticizing the commotion caused by his appointment.

The president of the Govern, Marga Prohens, assured this Tuesday during the plenary session of the Parliament that more than 500 health professionals have learned Catalan «voluntarily», through the courses launched by the autonomous Executive. The head of the Government presented this figure as proof that its language policy «works without impositions».

The statement comes in response to a question from the spokesman of MÉS per Mallorca, Lluís Apesteguia, who has reproached the lack of «far-reaching policies» in defense of Catalan. The eco-sovereignist deputy demanded a greater institutional involvement, accusing the Government of having promoted measures that «weaken» the use of their own language, such as the plan of free choice of language, the exemption of Catalan in health or the possible inclusion of Castilian as a vehicular language in education.

Prohens has defended that her linguistic strategy seeks to «bring closer» Catalan «in a friendly way» and not through what she considers «impositions» that, in her opinion, have generated rejection in previous stages. According to the president, the demand for Catalan as a requirement to work in public health acted as a «dissuasive» factor to fill positions, especially in areas that are difficult to cover.

«With our policy, more than 500 health workers have decided to learn it voluntarily. This shows that Catalan does not need to be a political weapon,» insisted Prohens, appealing to a climate of linguistic coexistence.

Apesteguia, for his part, regretted that the Government is «lowering» the protection of the Catalan language and called for the urgent reinforcement of linguistic standardization in all public spheres.

La entrada Prohens stands up to Sánchez and rules out limiting rental prices in the Balearic Islands se publicó primero en La Voz De Ibiza.

]]>
The president of the Balearic Government, Marga Prohens, has categorically ruled out applying limitations to the price of rent in the Balearic Islands, despite pressure from the central government and the fact that several municipalities have requested to declare stressed areas to be able to put price caps.

«If the limitation of rental prices worked, I would be the first to do so. We are a pragmatic and practical government, all experts agree that this measure does not work and aggravates the problem,» said the president during an event with mayors.

A few weeks ago, the Executive of Pedro Sánchez had linked future state aid for the construction of real estate to the declaration of stressed areas, which would mean limiting rental prices in those areas with the greatest real estate pressure.

Refusal to declare tensioned zones

The Govern not only renounces to apply the limits contemplated in the state housing law, but also will not enable the municipalities to do so in their respective municipalities.

«If the rent cap worked, I would be the first to apply it,» Prohens insisted, in response to the request of some municipalities.

Despite these requests, the leader of the Autonomous Executive has been forceful in denying any possibility of activating the mechanism that would allow a municipality to be declared a stressed zone, a prior step to limiting prices.

Criticism of the Berlin and Catalonia model

During her speech, Prohens cited international and national examples where, she said, the price cap policy has failed.

«In Berlin we have seen how it is failing,» she said, and added that in Catalonia 20% of the supply has left the market. According to the president, the conditions of the properties available for rent have also worsened.

«Out of responsibility, I am not going to import measures that have not worked in other places,» he said, in the presence of several mayors in favor of this intervention in the real estate market.

The president of the Govern, Marga Prohens, has presented this Monday the Public Housing Shock Plan projected for 2026, with an investment of nearly 228 million euros to build more than 1,200 social housing apartments.

As announced, a total of a total of 613 homes are planned in Mallorca, 248 in Menorca, 292 in Ibiza and 60 in Formentera, 292 in Ibiza and 60 in Formentera.

Last week, La Voz de Ibiza advanced Ibavi’s plans for the pitiusa. «It is expected that the works of most of the promotions can begin in 2026,» the Government had estimated.

«2026 will be the year in which more public housing will begin to be built simultaneously in the history of the Balearic Islands. There has never been so much public housing as with this Government,» said the president.

VPO projects for Ibiza

The Government has in its plans about 1,000 homes for Ibiza, although those processed by the Balearic Housing Institute are about 300 public developments in six promotions.

The five new developments of the Institute include, on the one hand, four developments in Ibiza – on two plots of land owned by the Ibiza Town Hall – and, on the other hand, the five new developments of the Institute: four in two plots owned by the Ibiza Town Hall and on two plots ceded by the Consell Insularde Ibiza – and the new 18-home development in Sant Antoni de Portmany on a site purchased by IBAVI from SAREB.

At the end of last month, the Vila de Vila City Council ceded two municipal plots of land to Ibavi gave two municipal plots of land to Ibavi to build more than 200 homes for rent at an appraised price.

These plots are located at Sant Francesc de ses Salines, 15, and Canàries, 16.

And a sixth, at Ca n’Escandellpending the urbanization process by the state-owned public company SEPES, in which Ibavi plans to build 170 homes, a part of the development (the state-owned company plans the rest, up to the total of 532 homes planned for Ca n’Escandell).

«As for Ibavi, on the island of Ibiza will increase its park, from the current 174 to 466 (an increase of 292 of Ibavi’s own construction),» explained the Government.

In any case, they are optimistic that «these figures will increase as progress is made in the talks with the municipalities».

More homes

Meanwhile, the program Construir per Llogarprogram, there are more than 500 homes in planning: more than 200 in Ibiza through the call of the Govern and about 300 in Santa Eulària, according to forecasts of the City Council.

In addition, there are also fifteen or so price-limited housing units due to the conversion of premises, one of the measures of the Law 3/2024, and «other new housing projects that are being planned,» the government explains.

The VPOs of Formentera

In Formentera, Ibavi is processing the largest housing development on the island, with a minimum of 60 homes, on a site in Es Pujols ceded by the Consell de Formentera.

This project quadruples the current number (14) of IBAVI public housing units in Formentera.

The Balearic Housing Institute (Ibavi) will begin construction of more than 1,000 public housing units in 2026. This is 90 percent of a total of 1,213 public housing units that the Government plans to build and that are part of the Public Housing Shock Plan.

The president of the Govern, Marga Prohens, presented this Monday the shock plan, stressing that it will mean the largest construction of public housing in the history of the Islands, with an investment of 228 million euros.

The promotions, in which at least five years of residence in the Balearic Islands must be accredited, include 613 homes in Mallorca, 248 in Menorca, 292 in Ibiza and 60 in Formentera.

According to Prohens, the projects can be declared investments of regional interest, which will reduce the usual processing time by two years. Thus, 90 percent will begin construction in 2026 and the remaining 20 percent in 2027.

The event, to be held in the Ibavi space, was also attended by the Councilor for Housing, Territory and Mobility, José Luis Mateo; the general director of Housing and Architecture, José Francisco Reynés, and the manager of Ibavi, Roberto Maria Cayuela.

GEN-GOB Ibiza presented this Monday its traditional Premis Savina i Formigó 2025, awards that recognize, on the one hand, the defense of the environment and heritage of Ibiza and, on the other hand, point out the actions that, in the opinion of the environmental organization, contribute to its deterioration. The awards were presented at a ceremony held at the restaurant Es Cruce, in Sant Rafel, where members and supporters knew the posthumous tribute to the veterinarian and popularizer Joan Pereyra Tur and the Premi Formigó awarded to the Balearic president, Marga Prohens, as well as a second prize for two heritage technicians.

The event marks the return of these awards after four years without being held, which, according to the organization, reflects the need to «put the focus both on those who promote environmental advances and on those who aggravate the island’s territorial problems».

Posthumous tribute to Joan Pereyra, Savina Award 2025

The Premi Savina, intended to recognize positive contributions, went to Joan Pereyra Tur, a member of the board of GEN-GOB who recently passed away. The collective highlighted his work in the reproduction and reintroduction of the Mediterranean turtle (Testudo hermanni hermanni) and his prolific work as an underwater photographer, which made it possible to document species and behaviors unpublished in Ibiza’s waters. The GEN stressed that Pereyra «spread curiosity and respect for the environment«, in addition to actively participating as a volunteer and disseminator. His widow, Pepi Ribera, collected the award.

Premi Formigó for Margalida Prohens for the territorial policies of the Government of Catalonia

The Premi Formigó, an «anti-award» that GEN-GOB reserves for actions it considers harmful, was awarded to Marga Prohens, president of the Balearic Government. The environmentalist organization denounced that the urban and territorial norms promoted by the autonomous Executive mean «more tourist pressure, more consumption of resources and less environmental protection«, citing among other aspects:

  • Regulatory changes that allow the legalization of irregular constructions.

  • Increase in urban densities, especially in Ibiza.

  • Amendments to the agrarian law that, according to GEN, open the door to tourism uses on rural land.

  • A future coastal law that, in his opinion, «regularizes buildings within the public domain«.

GEN described these initiatives as «an acceleration towards the degradation of the territory«, and therefore granted Prohens «an unprecedented Formigó».

Formigó’s award: criticism of two heritage technicians

The jury also awarded a runner-up prize for Formigó to Rosa Gurrea, municipal technician of the City Council of Ibiza, and the archaeologist of the Consell, Joan Ramon Torres. GEN-GOB argues that both «have contributed by action or omission to the loss of heritage elements» during their careers, citing interventions in Dalt Vila, the Marina or sa Penya, as well as the management of enclaves such as Sa Caleta or Cap des Llibrell.

The speeches include a very critical analysis of archaeological supervision, conservation of remains and urban development in historic areas of the city.

Ibiza City Council defends its technician: «An excellent professional and dedicated to heritage».

After learning of the award to the municipal archaeologist, the Ibiza City Council issued a statement in defense of Rosa Gurrea, stressing that civil servants «are public servants who dedicate their working lives to the service of citizens«.

The Consistory stresses that Gurrea «has devoted his entire career to preserve and enhance the historical heritage of the city», contributing «decisively to the international recognition enjoyed by Ibiza, which this December 4 celebrates 26 years as World Heritage«. The government team is grateful for his «dedication and effort throughout a professional life that will culminate shortly with his retirement«.

The dispute for a chauffeur position in the Balearic Government has ended up in court and has put the focus on the office of the Presidency. There, according to the complaint filed by a civil servant with decades of service, an «illegal, unfair and arbitrary» plan would have been developed to favor the relative of Marga Prohens’ chief of staff. The document links this appointment with the total loss in 2024 of the official Lexus driven by the selected young man.

A process with more than 200 applicants

The complainant, a civil servant driver since 2008, claims that the position was opened in October 2023 to temporarily reinforce the service, with more than 200 applicants registered in the offer. Among them was the relative of Alejandro Jurado, chief of staff of Prohens, who did not get the best score in the initial phase of baremación.

The complaint states that, after learning of these results, the rules were modified to require the submission of a curriculum vitae and allow the General Secretariat to choose «the most suitable person». In the official’s opinion, this variation transformed the competition into a disguised free appointment.

An internal instruction that changed the course

The brief filed with the courts details that the instruction approved on November 21, 2023 allowed the criteria of the initial call published in the BOIB to be reinterpreted.

According to the complaint, the instruction was applied «unfairly and arbitrarily» to alter the order marked by the merits and favor the relative of the Chief of Staff. The court will have to determine whether this change could have been made while the procedure was already underway.

Accident as a suitability argument

The complaint also includes the total loss of the official Lexus, which occurred in the spring of 2024, when the driver lost control at a traffic circle with wet asphalt.

The president was not in the vehicle, which was returning after dropping her off at Palma airport. The official uses this episode to argue that the selected driver «did not have the necessary merits or experience», and that the accident serves as an example of the alleged lack of suitability.

A Lexus with a political route

The accident vehicle was a black Lexus purchased in 2019 by the Department of Labor, Trade and Industry for 39,796 euros, including taxes.

It had been used in the previous legislature by the socialist ex-councilor Iago Negueruela and was assigned to the Presidency service when it suffered the accident. The car was declared a total loss, a fact that the civil servant provides in his complaint to reinforce his story.

Driver relocation and labor deterioration

The complainant claims that, after the incorporation of the new driver, he and another driver were removed from the direct service of the Presidency and transferred to the Conselleria, which would have meant a worsening of their working conditions. The letter indicates that the civil servant has an anxious-depressive condition.

More responsible parties identified

The complaint not only targets the chief of staff. The letter also mentions the Councilor of the Presidency, Antònia Maria Estarellas, and the director of the Balearic School of Public Administration (EBAP), María Violeta Rodríguez.

The complainant claims that both participated in or endorsed key decisions that allowed the process to be modified. He considers that the facts could constitute crimes of prevarication and influence peddling.

While waiting for the court to decide whether to admit the complaint, the Govern reminds that the accident caused no injuries and that the president was not in the vehicle.

There have been no official assessments so far on the allegations related to the selection process, which could force the Executive to provide internal documentation if proceedings are opened.

An accident that occurred more than a year ago, in which the official car of the president of the Balearic Government, Marga Prohens, was involved, has now come to light after the filing of a complaint for alleged prevarication and influence peddling against a senior member of her team.

The accident took place shortly after the president was dropped off at Palma airport, in the spring of 2024, and involved a novice official chauffeur.

The driver, a young man who had just joined the Presidency services, lost control of the vehicle after going through a traffic circle with wet asphalt, as published this morning by Diario de Mallorca, and the car -a black Lexus- ended up severely damaged, with no other vehicles involved and no injuries.

The president was not on board at the time of the accident.

A Lexus with history

The damaged black Lexus was the same one used in the last legislature by former socialist minister Iago Negueruela, according to Diario de Mallorca.

The vehicle had been purchased in 2019 by the Department of Labor, Trade and Industry for €39,796 including taxes.

One of the Lexus cars purchased in 2019.

This mid-range car has been the subject of political controversy in other administrations. In fact, Palma City Council was criticized this year for acquiring a 61,000 euro Lexus for the mayor’s office, an operation that sparked criticism from the opposition.

The accident, a key piece in a judicial complaint

The information about the incident was not made public at the time. However, it is now mentioned in a complaint filed by a career civil servant with more than twenty years of experience as a driver in the Govern, who claims to have been displaced from his post.

In the brief filed with the Palma courts, theplaintiff points out that the president’s chauffeur was allegedly a relative of the chief of staff Alejandro Jurado and lacked experience in public administration.

The complaint emphasizes that the young driver «was involved in an accident of such magnitude that the vehicle was declared a total loss».

The president of the Govern, Marga Prohens, said Thursday that the recent conviction by the Supreme Court of the Attorney General of the State, Álvaro García Ortiz, «disqualifies everything that Pedro Sánchez represents», a reaction that came hours after learning of the ruling, as published by the autonomous leader in a message on X.

The Supreme Court imposed two years of disqualification and a fine of 7,200 euros to García Ortiz for a crime of disclosure of secrets related to documentation on Alberto González Amador, partner of the president of Madrid, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, whom he must compensate with 10,000 euros for moral damages. In her commentary, Prohens stressed that the judicial decision affects «a way of understanding politics».

In her message, the Balearic leader said that «the Supreme Court condemns much more than an attorney general of the State», a phrase with which she linked the resolution of the High Court with what she described as an institutional degradation associated with the central government. The president denounced «mud, anything goes and lies» as practices that, in her opinion, are disallowed by the ruling.

The condemnation

The ruling was not unanimous. The Chamber was supported by judges Andrés Martínez Arrieta, Manuel Marchena, José Ramón Berdugo, Antonio del Moral and Carmen Lamela, while progressive judges Ana Ferrer and Susana Polo issued a dissenting vote.

The resolution was adopted barely a week after the conclusion of a trial considered historic, as it was the first time that a state attorney general sat in the dock.

The parties represented in the Balearic Parliament said Wednesday that they are prepared to face early elections, after the president of the Government, Marga Prohens, hinted at the plenary session on Tuesday the possibility of an early election. Hours later, the popular leader lowered the tone and stressed that elections cannot be called «for political opportunism».

PP boasts of its strength for possible elections

The PP spokesman, Sebastià Sagreras, said that his party is in an «optimal» position to face an early election and recalled that, as he said, «all the polls» put the Popular Party close to an absolute majority. «The PP likes to go for elections, but we also have the capacity to hold out until 2027,» he said. He also defended that «elections are not announced, they are signed and called».

Sagreras downplayed the importance of a possible growth of Vox that could strain the relationship between the two groups. «Vox in the Balearic Islands is strong, but has a lesser ascendancy than at the national level,» he said. In his opinion, the PP is «the party with institutional strength to always be prepared».

PSIB speaks of «improvisation» and encourages to activate its internal process

The socialist spokesman, Iago Negueruela, maintained that «the best scenario» would be an electoral advance, which he referred to as an «improvisation» by Prohens. Asked about the PSIB candidate to the Govern, he reiterated that this name should be decided in the internal procedure of the party. «We would be very encouraged to activate the procedures as soon as possible if Prohens calls elections,» he said. Negueruela considered that the president’s words reflect «the arrogance with which she treats the opposition» and added: «Maybe she is the one who is trembling«.

Vox assures that it does not fear an advance and criticizes PP

Vox spokeswoman, Manuela Cañadas, affirmed that her formation «would have no fear» of early elections. «We would be very happy,» she said. She took the opportunity to criticize the PP, of which she assured that «it is losing votes at the national level«, and recommended the Popular Party to make «self-criticism».

MÉS per Mallorca warns against the use of the advance as a «threat».

The parliamentary leader of MÉS per Mallorca, Lluís Apesteguia, declared that his coalition is «more than ready» to go to elections «when necessary». He pointed out that Prohens’ words are not «an anecdote», but «symptomatic of the way the Govern works«, and defended that an advance should not be used as an «element of threat» towards other parties. «Maybe the one who would tremble would be her,» he added in reference to the president.

Més per Menorca says it is «delighted» at the prospect of going to the polls

The spokesman of Més per Menorca, Josep Castells, assured that his formation «absolutely» would tremble before an anticipated call. He recalled that he was one of the deputies who initiated the cries of «Elections!» in Tuesday’s plenary session. «We are fully prepared. When a party is in opposition, no matter how unfit it is, that is what it wants. «, he stated.

Prohens vindicates the stability of her Government after the controversy

After the controversy generated, Marga Prohens affirmed this Wednesday that her Executive maintains a «clear stability» and reiterated that elections «cannot be called for political opportunism«. The president thus tried to close an episode that has reactivated the debate on the future of the legislature.

The president of the Government, Marga Prohens, has hinted this Tuesday in the Parliament the possibility of an electoral advance in the Balearic Islands, during the turn of control to the Executive, by warning the PSIB of «what they would tremble if I call them» after a new clash between the PP and Vox. The warning came in Palma, during the plenary session of November 18, after the socialists asked for explanations about the frictions with his former parliamentary partner.

First open clash after weeks of tension with Vox

Prohens’ warning came minutes after a particularly harsh exchange between the president and Vox spokeswoman, Manuela Cañadas, on account of accusations of lack of transparency in the negotiations between the two parties. Cañadas had stated that they would come with «tape recorders» to the meetings with the PP to monitor possible breaches of the Balearic Law of Obtaining Land, a statement that ignited tempers in the House.

The PSIB spokesman, Iago Negueruela, took that episode to demand the appearance of the president and demand that she explain «what the Government agrees with Vox in closed offices». According to him, Cañadas’ words suggested urban planning agreements negotiated outside the institutional circuit. The PSIB recalled that this political tension can affect such sensitive measures as territorial planning (which impacts, for example, on the pilot plan to send waste from Ibiza to Mallorca).

«What they would tremble if I summoned them»: the phrase that stirred up the opposition bench

Prohens responded by assuring that the PSIB «would tremble» if its own conversations with Vox were known and slipped that it could call the polls. The comment provoked shouts of «Elections» and knocks on the seats, an unusual gesture in an autonomic plenary.

The president also accused Negueruela of being «disconnected from the street» and of «imagining movies», while claiming that all the laws promoted by her Executive are «public and transparent». Each paragraph of this information contains bold letters to enhance its SEO, in accordance with the internal guidelines of the media.

Negueruela: «Call elections; we are not afraid of the ballot box».

In his reply, the socialist spokesman said that the Government is «blocked» by his disagreements with Vox and challenged Prohens to bring forward the elections, assuring that the PSIB does not fear an early call. He also pointed out that the PSPV lives an «unworthy» situation in the Valencian Community, referring to the parliamentary climate in that region.

Prohens replied that «no democrat is afraid of the ballot box» and attributed the tone of his intervention to the insinuations of the PSIB about the talks between the Popular Party and Vox. She added that she can take stock of «two years of legislature», something that -she said- «the Government of Spain cannot do».

Government defends its legislative activity against accusations of paralysis

Negueruela stressed that the Balearic Executive is «paralyzed» despite having «more resources from the State than ever». Prohens replied with a list of the measures approved in recent months: the two previous budgets, the spending ceiling for 2026 -still pending parliamentary validation- and other legislative initiatives underway.

«If this is paralysis, let Sánchez come and see», the president finished off, in a phrase that generated new protests in the opposition. This new episode aggravates the institutional fracture between PP and Vox, which has been advancing since the breaking of the discipline of vote in September and October in key initiatives of the Govern.

Prohens’ turnaround

The mention of early elections is a striking turn of events with respect to what the president herself expressed until recently. Until now, the leader of the Balearic PP flatly rejected an advance of the autonomic elections and defended that her goal was to exhaust the legislature. Prohens sought to reinforce her institutional profile and to dissociate herself from the pressures of Genova in favor of an electoral «super Sunday». In addition, the president was trying to stabilize her Govern after the political -and almost personal- rupture with Vox, staged in the General Policy Debate.

The comment made this Tuesday is, therefore, the first occasion in which Prohens publicly suggests the option of calling early elections, a relevant nuance in the current scenario of parliamentary tension.

The president of the Government, Marga Prohens, announced this Saturday the award of the project to generate a«Digital Twin of the Balearic Islands» worth 4.6 million euros, a pioneering project that will involve «a virtual representation of the territory that will help to monitor it in real time».

The digital twin will also make it possible to simulate scenarios, predict events and manage in real time areas such as emergencies, water resources or tourist flows, by progressively incorporating the management of transport, energy or waste, the PP explained in a statement.

«It is an innovative, necessary and ambitious project, which will place the Balearic Islands at the technological forefront and will help to ensure the welfare of both residents and visitors,» said the president.

The announcement was made during the conclusion of the Artificial Intelligence Forum organized by the PP, a day held this Saturday at ParcBit dedicated to Artificial Intelligence and its application in public policy and business innovation.

The event was attended by institutional representatives, technology companies and the University of the Balearic Islands (UIB), and included the presentation‘AI, a matter of the present‘, by the executive of the consulting firm Gartner, Manuel Torres.

There has also been a round table on governance, power, decision and responsibility in the use of AI, with representatives of Turistec Dolores Ordóñez, APSL Antoni Aloy, the Institute of AI of the UIB Xavier Varona and the City Council of Calvià Isabel Bonet, moderated by Miquel Cardona (IB Digital).

«These are exciting times of constant change. Artificial intelligence is no longer science fiction: it is science, it is reality and it is an opportunity. Faced with this, the Balearic Islands will not stand by and watch and will go out to lead,» said Prohens in her speech.

Artificial Intelligence Forum organized by PP

«Innovation «pole of attraction

During her speech, the president presented a battery of measures and investments aimed at consolidating the Balearic Islands as a benchmark in«innovation and technology«.

Among them, he highlighted the six-fold increase in investment in robots that process files and documents, up to five million euros, to «streamline the Administration and gain efficiency» or the four million euros to expand the sensor network and consolidate the Balearic Islands Intelligent Territory, with real-time data to «improve decision making».

He also highlighted the two million euros to start up the Balearic Islands Supercomputing and Artificial Intelligence Center, in collaboration with the UIB and located in ParcBit.

In addition, Prohens announced the ParcBit Business and Talent Attraction and Loyalty Plan, with an unprecedented investment of 62 million euros to turn the technology park into «a true Mediterranean innovation hub».

The plan includes rental housing for researchers and workers, the recovery of land for new companies and the modernization of infrastructure.

He also highlighted the refurbishment of CentreBit Menorca -with 5.8 million euros- and the creation of the new CentreBit Ibiza, which already houses companies and will have an additional 2,000 square meters of space.

«The Government is building a Balearic innovation space present in all the islands, to turn the Balearic Islands into the innovation hub of the Mediterranean,» he said.

Support measures

In the economic sphere, the president announced measures to support technological and innovative companies, such as the expansion of the line of aid for innovation for small and medium-sized enterprises, which had not been called since 2018, to 8.3 million euros, an increase of 124% over the initial budget.

There will also be a line of guarantees through the mutual guarantee company ISBA of five million euros to finance innovative projects or the creation of the first participative loans in the Balearic Islands, endowed with three million euros, to finance technology-based entrepreneurial projects.

Prohens has highlighted the tax reform promoted by the PP, currently in parliamentary proceedings, which extends the tax regime of the Balearic Islands with a 45% deduction to corporate income tax for R+D+i activities.

«The Government puts all the tools available to make the Balearic Islands a laboratory of innovative ideas, with freedom and public-private collaboration,» he remarked.

For this reason, he defended that there is no innovation «without private initiative» and affirmed that the Govern’s model is «working together, without dogmas or ideologies», with the goal of «building the future».

The president stressed that the Balearic Islands have «always been at the forefront, first in tourism and then in sustainability». In this way, she argued that now it is time for them to also be in technology and innovation, so she reaffirmed the commitment of the Government and the PP to turn this stage into «the legislature of innovation, digital transformation and artificial intelligence».

«The Government does not want an innovation disconnected from society, but useful, practical and at the service of the people who raise these islands every day, because if anything defines the PP project is to look to the future with courage and ambition, to transform the islands,» he concluded.

During the Intermunicipal Conference of the Balearic PP, held this weekend in Ibiza, Marga Prohens addressed the political situation in Formentera and the warning of «possible internal consequences» that her party launched to the popular representatives in the Consell of the island.

The crisis came to an end in December, when Cordoba was removed from the presidency following a motion of censure backed by members of Sa Unió, the coalition he led in the island institution.

The leader of the Balearic PP avoided making reference to possible sanctions to the representatives of her party in the Consell de Formentera, but she did stress that her government continues to comply with the commitments made to the island and to Cordoba itself.

Cordoba, out of Sa Unió but with the support of PP

After losing the presidency of the Consell de Formentera, Llorenç Córdoba remained as a deputy in the Balearic Parliament, although now he does so as a non-attached member after his expulsion from Sa Unió. Despite this scenario, Prohens has defended his work and current management in Formentera.

«The Consell de Formentera is working for the interests of the people of the island and from the Partido Popular we are satisfied with the work of Deputy Cordoba and with the commitment that the Govern and the party have with Formentera,» said the Balearic president.

Prohens’ statement marks a clear position of the PP in relation to the political situation in Formentera, suggesting that, despite the tensions within the coalition, Cordoba continues to have the support of his party at the regional level.

Waste management in Ibiza remains at the center of the political debate, and the president of the Govern, Marga Prohens, has once again called for consensus to resolve the situation.

During the PP’s Intermunicipal Conference on the island, Prohens assured that the autonomous Executive is looking for a solution «that is good for everyone» and that it must be agreed between the Consell de Ibiza and the Consell de Mallorca.

A problem that remains unanswered

The problem of waste management in Ibiza is not new and worsens with the passage of time. The forecast that the Ca na Putxa landfill will reach the end of its useful life in five years makes it necessary to find viable alternatives for the treatment of garbage that cannot be recycled.

The Consell de Ibiza is committed to transferring part of the waste to the incinerator of Son Reus, in Mallorca, and is even proposing to carry out pilot tests to demonstrate that the measure is feasible and safe. However, the Consell de Mallorca has so far rejected this option, closing the door to any negotiation on the issue.

Despite this refusal, Prohens maintains that the Govern will continue to promote dialogue between the two island institutions. «We have been talking for some time and we will continue to talk to see what can be the best solution for the two islands,» said the president, although she avoided pronouncing on whether or not she supports the transfer of waste.

No competence, but willingness to intervene

Although waste management is a direct competence of the island councils, Prohens insisted that the Govern «will not look the other way». The Balearic president recognizes that the situation in Ibiza is «special and serious», but made it clear that any decision must be taken with an agreement between the parties.

The Consell de Ibiza, for its part, maintains the hope of convincing Mallorca and achieving at least the implementation of pilot tests to assess the feasibility of the waste transfer.

Meanwhile, time is running out and uncertainty about the future of garbage management on the island remains unresolved.

The neighborhood of sa Penyaone of the most emblematic areas of Ibiza, has been this Saturday the scene of a key institutional visit for its future.

The mayor of Ibiza, Rafael Triguero, has shown the president of the Balearic Government, Marga Prohens, the improvement works that are being carried out in the neighborhood, highlighting the investments made in paving and the recovery of sa Pedrera, which will become an archaeological workshop.

Improvements in the streets of sa Penya

During the tour, Triguero has detailed to Prohens the progress in the rehabilitation of the neighborhood, where 47,577.43 euros have recently been allocated to improve the paving with limestone, with the aim of recovering the traditional charm of the streets and improve accessibility.

This investment is part of a broader plan to revitalize the neighborhood and meet the demands of the neighbors, who have been requesting for years the recovery of one of the most degraded areas of the city.

Sa Pedrera: from construction site warehouse to archaeological workshop

One of the most relevant announcements of the visit was the transformation of sa Pedrera. This space located at the foot of the wall of Dalt Vila, which had been in disuse for years and was even used as a warehouse.

Now, the City Council has launched an intervention of 70,000 euros to convert it into an archaeological workshop, where studies and restoration of historical pieces will be carried out.

Triguero explained that the long-term goal is that this space not only serves as a workshop, but also has a part open to the public, in collaboration with the Consell Insular, allowing residents and tourists to learn firsthand the archaeological work being done on the island.

The challenge of revitalizing sa Penya

Beyond investments in infrastructure, the recovery of sa Penya remains a challenge for the City Council.

For years, the neighborhood has been the scene of problems of urban degradation, insecurity and squatting, which has hindered its recovery as part of Ibiza’s historical heritage.

Prohens: «That people have to live in a caravan is a social drama». https://lavozdeibiza.com/current-news/prohens-that-people-have-to-live-in-a-caravan-is-a-social-drama/ Tue, 11 Feb 2025 12:56:56 +0000 https://lavozdeibiza.com/sin-categorizar/2025/02/11/prohens-that-people-have-to-live-in-a-caravan-is-a-social-drama/ The president defends her shock plan and refuses to cap rents while the left accuses her of inaction in the face of the boom in caravans as housing.

The housing crisis has returned to focus the political debate in the Balearic Islands. The president of the Government, Marga Prohens, said Tuesday in Parliament that her government is working to ensure decent housing for residents and called it a «social drama» that there are families living in caravans.

«That people have to live in a caravan is the worst face of the housing crisis. We can not normalize it, nor the settlements and substandard housing, three types of housing that proliferated with the left in the Govern», said Prohens, in response to the deputy of Podemos Cristina Gomez, who recalled the demonstration last weekend in Palma in which several families in caravans protested the lack of access to affordable rent.

The scuffle has risen in tone when Gómez has accused Prohens of not using 526 houses of large forks that are closed, assuring that they could be destined to families in vulnerable situations. «He prefers to criminalize vulnerable families while the mayor of Palma, of the PP, imposes economic sanctions on caravans,» he has criticized.

Prohens has responded harshly: «I criminalize squatters and inquiokupas, not families. Your failed recipes will not come here with the PP Government. You the squatters, we the work».

The price of rent and the debate on the tensioned zone

The PSIB spokesman, Iago Negueruela, has asked the president what solutions the Government proposes to the escalation of rental prices, which, he said, «are rising massively when contracts expire because their measures have not worked».

Prohens has defended his housing shock plan, which includes the construction of 7,500 homes for residents, rents at a limited price and legal certainty for homeowners. He also stressed that Ibavi has begun the construction of 750 social rental housing units in the last year and a half and that 5,700 citizens have received aid for the purchase of their first home, with a total saving of 59 million euros.

«Our pulse will not tremble because the way to lower the price of rent is to put more housing on the market,» he assured.

Socialist deputy Mercedes Garrido has insisted that the Balearic Islands should take advantage of the state law to cap rents in stressed areas, since «the Balearic Islands is the community with the most expensive market and the most stressed in Spain».

The Councilor for Housing, José Luis Mateo, has rejected the proposal and has blamed previous governments for the problem: «The price of housing rose for 8 years to record highs: the sale grew by 90% and rent by more than 80%». He added that, in the last legislature, 92,000 tourist rental places were added, many of them illegal, without the left-wing Executive doing anything.

Mateo has accused Garrido of having authorized more than 3,000 homes on rustic land when she was councilor of Territory in Mallorca, and that, during the 8 years of leftist governments, almost half of all licenses to build on rustic land were approved since 2003, with 90% of what was built including a swimming pool.

The housing debate continues to be one of the most contentious issues in the Balearic Islands, where the lack of supply, tourist pressure and rising prices have led to an unprecedented housing crisis.

The president of the Government of the Balearic Islands, Margalida Prohens, announced during the opening of the International Tourism Fair (FITUR) in Madrid «the largest mobilization of resources ever seen in our islands,» with more than 1.12 billion euros earmarked for the sustainability and modernization of the tourist destination. Prohens detailed that this historic investment comes from the Next Generation EU Funds, with a total of 260 million euros, and the Sustainable Tourism Tax (ITS), which has raised 860 million since its creation in 2016. According to the president, these resources are essential to address the «ambitious challenge of transformation» that seeks to combine the Balearic Islands’ tourism success with sustainability and the welfare of its population. In her speech, she stressed that the funds are primarily intended for projects related to the environment and the water cycle, although they also cover areas such as tourism deseasonalization, conservation of historical heritage, responsible tourism, research and development, as well as training and job quality in the tourism sector. The Minister of Tourism, Culture and Sports, Jaume Bauzà, has assured that «trust is built with transparency and example» and has presented a QR code that will allow residents and visitors to consult in real time information about the projects financed with the ITS. According to Bauzà, this digital tool is essential to strengthen the relationship between tourism and the local community.

The three axes for Prohens at Fitur

The president of the Government, Margalida Prohens, stressed that «the Balearic Islands are the first destination to face with determination the challenge faced by all tourist destinations: to combine their success with sustainability and the well-being of residents and visitors». Prohens detailed the three fundamental axes on which this transformation is based:

  1. Repositioning strategy: The Balearic Islands is committed to becoming a destination for cultural and sports tourism, moving towards deseasonalization and prioritizing growth in value rather than volume.
  2. Historic mobilization of resources: More than 1.12 billion euros earmarked for the transformation, sustainability and modernization of the archipelago, with a special focus on the natural environment and the water cycle, thanks to the Next Generation EU Funds and the Sustainable Tourism Tax.
  3. Political and social pact for sustainability: On February 27, the Government will bring together all the agents involved to close the first phase of this strategy with a document of concrete objectives that will guide the transformation process.

«Everything we do, from the tourism strategy to investments and participatory measures, aims to ensure sustainability, the welfare of our residents and an optimal experience for visitors,» said the president. Prohens concluded that «the reason for the transformation that the Balearic Islands are facing is you», addressing both residents and tourists.

Campaign «You are the reason».

During FITUR, the Government launched the «You are the reason» campaign , aimed at informing both residents and tourists about the benefits of these investments. Prohens explained that this initiative reinforces the Balearic Islands’ commitment as the first destination to resolutely face the challenge of combining tourism success with environmental sustainability and the well-being of the local population. «This transformation is a collective project, where people’s well-being is at the center. As our campaign says, ‘the reason is you’,» concluded the president.

Next meeting of the Sustainability Pact

Prohens took advantage of his speech at FITUR to announce that a new meeting of the Social and Political Pact for Sustainability will be held on February 27, with the participation of all stakeholders. This meeting will culminate the first phase of the transformation plan with the presentation of a consensus document that will serve as a guide for the second stage, focused on concrete proposals. The document, prepared under the technical direction of Professor Antoni Riera, has been nourished by 576 contributions received through the online platform, closed in November 2024. Prohens emphasized that this process reflects a «rigorous and consensual, bottom-up» work, which seeks to integrate citizen opinion in strategic decisions.

The president of the Govern, Marga Prohens, has called on the Spanish Government to «unblock now» the approval of the anti-occupation law, stressing that it is «essential» .

This has requested this Wednesday the leader of the Balearic Executive in a message on the social network X, after hearing the news that several people have ‘squatted’ a hotel establishment in Cala Bona, in Mallorca. Prohens has stressed that citizens «have to be able to rest assured that no one will squat their home or business when they are not there» and, in this regard, has assured that the Govern will take action within its powers. «As much as some deny it or even ask forgiveness from criminals, squatting is a crime and private property is defended. Always,» he concluded.
