The police tutors in Ibiza and Formentera carried out 1,072 actions during the academic year 2023-2024, representing an increase of 5% over the previous period, according to the report presented by the Directorate General of Emergencies. Although interventions within the school environment have remained unchanged, actions outside schools have increased by 18%, reflecting greater conflict in other environments.

Decrease in conflicts inside the classroom, but more problems outside the classroom

One of the most relevant data of the report is the 7% reduction in the number of interventions for conflicts between students in the classrooms of Ibiza and Formentera. However, the increase in incidents outside the school environment puts the focus on problems such as family conflicts, social risk or risky behavior in public spaces.

At the Balearic level, the number of interventions for serious bullying increased by 34 %, although the authorities emphasize that the trend of increases close to 50 % has slowed down. As for drugs and possession of substances, there has been a decrease of 11.6 % in the number of interventions in schools.

More party interventions and prevention of risk behaviors

The report also highlights the reinforcement of prevention in summer parties, one of the priorities of the Govern during the last course. In Ibiza and Formentera, workshops on alcohol consumption, drugs, knives and sexual aggressions were given to students of ESO and Bachillerato.

For the next school year, the authorities seek to consolidate these initiatives and implement new emergency prevention programs, such as storm and high wind protocols for primary and secondary school students.

The Consell de Govern has given the green light to the construction of the new nursery and primary school in Santa Eulària, which will be called CEIP Es Faralló and will have 457 school places.

The Regional Ministry of Education and Universities has catalogued this project as a«priority», since Santa Eulària is the municipality of Ibiza with «more newly arrived students», which makes it essential to open a center with two complete lines to «meet the demand» for schooling and maintain «adequate» ratios. The works of Es Faralló, declared in November as «investment of regional interest», will provide the municipality with a reference center, which will have:

  • 6 early childhood education units
  • 12 elementary school classrooms
  • Specific Educational Unit in an Ordinary Center

Santa Eulària, a municipality with a growing school network

At present, Santa Eulària has eight infant and primary schools, distributed between the urban center and the different towns of the municipality. The schools of Santa Eulària, Sant Ciriac and Venda d’Arabí are located in the town, while the villages of Jesús, Puig d’en Valls, Sant Carles, Santa Gertrudis and S’Olivera have their own facilities. The construction of the CEIP Es Faralló is part of the Educational Infrastructure Plan, which foresees the creation of 13 new centers for Ibiza and the expansion or refurbishment of 24 more in the next decade.

Complaint that schools in the Balearic Islands do not inform about the application of the choice of language for children https://lavozdeibiza.com/current-news/complaint-that-schools-in-the-balearic-islands-do-not-inform-about-the-application-of-the-choice-of-language-for-children/ Thu, 14 Nov 2024 19:42:43 +0000 https://lavozdeibiza.com/sin-categorizar/2024/11/14/complaint-that-schools-in-the-balearic-islands-do-not-inform-about-the-application-of-the-choice-of-language-for-children/ The organization Escuela de Todos demands that the Regional Ministry of Education force schools to comply with the regulations and guarantee that families can choose the language of instruction.

The organization School for Allwith PLIS Education and Balearic Civil Society (SCB), has denounced that most of the early childhood education centers in the Balearic Islands do not inform on their websites about the right of parents to choose the language of instruction for their children. choose the language of instruction for their childrenas established by law. According to the entity, the Minister of Education and Universities, Antoni Vera, had promised that this information would be available on the websites of all schools, but to date, less than ten schools have complied with this indication. In view of this situation, Escuela de Todos demands that the Regional Ministry of Education and the Inspectorate take measures to ensure that schools are transparent and respect the Law of Linguistic Normalization along with the decree of minimum standards.

More claims for language choice

Last October, Escuela de Todos had also warned that the directors of some primary schools would have «replaced the will of parents to choose the language» by denouncing that «they would not have used the correct form» for enrollment. As reported by La Voz de Ibiza, in 13 of the 44 educational centers of Ibiza and Formentera, families have not been allowed to choose Spanish as the first language of instruction. Thus, in these centers the authorities «supplanted the families and imposed Catalan for all of them». In this regard, Escuela de Todos pointed out that, in June, the General Directorate of Educational Planning and Management sent instructions to the centers to include differentiated boxes in the registration forms, allowing parents to choose the language. According to the entity, the president of the Govern, Marga Prohens, acknowledged that in some places this directive was not initially complied with, but stated that, after an inspection, the correct form is now used in all of them. Escuela de Todos questioned these statements by revealing that, according to them, the councilor Antoni Vera has acknowledged in two resolutions that he does not have specific information on the forms used in each center, so he cannot verify whether parents were actually allowed to exercise their right.
