The return to the Pandora universe with Avatar 3: Fire and Ash is not only a cinematic event, but also a declaration of intent about the future of cinema in theaters. In the midst of the streaming era, the new installment directed by James Cameron arrives with a technical bet that claims the big screen as the ideal place to experience the audiovisual spectacle.

Spain also plays an important role in this premiere: it is one of the few countries in the world where the film will be shown with Cinity technology, an advanced projection system reserved for a very limited number of theaters.

Spain, a key location for the screening of Avatar 3

While in many countries Cinity technology is still a rarity, in Spain its implementation has been growing in recent years. Together with China, a pioneer country in this format, Spain is at the forefront in terms of the number of cinemas prepared to offer this experience.

This progress has been made possible thanks to the commitment of Odeon Multicinemas, which has been progressively adapting its facilities since 2023. To date, more than seventy films have already been screened in this format, and for the premiere of Avatar 3 the Cinity theater network will be expanded even further.

What is Cinity technology and how is Avatar 3 experienced?

The big difference in this third installment of Avatar is in how it will look: Cinity is a display system that integrates up to seven cutting-edge technologies into a single projection: 4K resolution, 3D imaging, increased brightness, high frame rate (HFR), high dynamic range (HDR), an expanded color gamut and surround sound.

The result is a more fluid, luminous and detailed image, accompanied by a sound that envelops the viewer. This combination seeks total immersion, something especially relevant in a saga designed to be experienced rather than simply seen.

All the cinemas in Spain where to see Avatar 3 in Cinity format

These are the confirmed cinemas where you can enjoy Avatar 3: Fire and Ash with Cinity technology:

  • A Coruña: Odeon Narón (Narón)

  • Alicante: Odeon Alicante

  • Asturias: Odeon Parque Astur (Avilés)

  • Barcelona: Odeon Vilanova (Vilanova i la Geltrú)

  • Bizkaia: Odeon Ballonti (Portugalete)

  • Cádiz: Odeon Bahía Plaza (Algeciras)

  • Girona: Odeon Girona

  • León: Odeon León

  • Madrid:

    • Odeon Sambil (Leganés)

    • Odeon Alcalá Norte (Madrid)

With this deployment, Spanish audiences will be able to enjoy the new installment of Avatar as it was conceived: as an immersive experience designed for the big screen, where technology and narrative go hand in hand.

James Cameron and the defense of cinema as an experience

The concern for preserving the theatrical experience is increasingly visible in the industry. In recent years, directors such as Christopher Nolan, Ryan Coogler and Paul Thomas Anderson have defended the importance of screening films in optimal conditions, respecting the original format.

In this line, James Cameron once again positions himself as one of the filmmakers most committed to technological innovation. Although Avatar 3 does not resort to extreme analog formats like other recent productions, it does represent a different technical feat, designed to exploit the capabilities of modern exhibition to the maximum.

Spanish cinema is preparing for a 2025 full of big names and projects that promise to consolidate the industry’s good creative momentum. Directors such as Alejandro Amenábar, Carla Simón, Cesc Gay, and Gracia Querejeta head the list of filmmakers who will release new productions. With these bets, the industry seeks not only to maintain the narrative quality that has characterized national fiction, but also to overcome the pending challenge: to improve its performance at the box office.

Stories for all tastes

Among the most anticipated projects is Alejandro Amenábar’s El cautivo, an ambitious historical production set in 1575, starring Julio Peña and Alessandro Borghi. There is also Romería by Carla Simón, which deals with family relationships marked by drugs and AIDS, and Mi amiga Eva by Cesc Gay, an intimate account of the changes in the life of a 50-year-old woman.

Gracia Querejeta will present La buena suerte, based on the novel by Rosa Montero, while Daniel Sánchez Arévalo will offer a choral comedy entitled Rondallas, set in a Galician coastal town. In the thriller area, Alberto Rodríguez will premiere Los tigres, about the discovery of a cocaine stash in a sunken cargo ship. Filmmaker Agustín Díaz Yanes returns with Un fantasma en la batalla, a political thriller that deals with the fight against ETA, while Fernando Colomo explores the creative crisis as a comedy with Las delicias del jardín.

Projects that revive hits and classics

2025 will also be the year of nostalgia. Samantha López Speranza will continue the saga of El otro lado de la cama with Todos los lados de la cama, and Pedro Aguilera revisits Carlos Saura’s classic with Día de caza, shifting the focus to women hunters. In addition,Borja Cobeaga will present Los aitas, a comedy that brings together a group of parents in Berlin during a gymnastics competition.

Expectations and releases to be confirmed

Although the list of titles is extensive, there are still questions as to whether projects such as Rodrigo Sorogoyen’s El ser querido or Aida y vuelta, a continuation of the mythical TV series, will arrive in time for this year. With these productions, 2025 promises to be a crucial year for Spanish cinema, not only for the quality of its stories, but also for the possibility of consolidating its position on the international scene and in the public’s preferences.

Movie theater attendance in 2024 has registered a 5% decline in 2024. In the year ahead, there were a total of 71 million moviegoers and a figure of €477 million grossed at the box office, according to provisional data as of December 29 from Comscore.

Thus, after three consecutive years of market growth, 2024 was marked by the effects of the screenwriters’ and actors’ strike in the United States, which led to the postponement to 2025 of many of the international releases scheduled for this year. This explains why, while the first half of the year closed with a 13% drop compared to the previous year, the second half of the year recovered ground compared to the same period in 2023. The best premiere of the year was ‘Inside Out 2’, which hit theaters on June 19, with 6.9 million euros in its opening weekend, making it the highest-grossing foreign film of the year, followed by ‘Deadpool and Wolverine’ and ‘Gru 4 My Favorite Villain’. On the other hand, as for the Spanish industry, the new installment of the saga ‘Padre no hay más que uno’, directed by Santiago Segura, is at the top of the ranking, followed by ‘La Infiltrada’ and ‘Buffalo Kids’. Spanish cinema closes 2024 with a market share of 19%, 2% more than in 2023. According to data provided by Comscore, the week of the year with the highest attendance of spectators was recorded from June 21 to 27 -cinema week- with a total of 2.4 million spectators, while the day with the highest attendance of the year was July 3 with 656,193 spectators. As for the provinces leading in number of spectators, Madrid (21.2%), Barcelona (13.9%), Valencia (6.4%), Alicante (4.1%), Seville (3.8%), Malaga (3.8%), Murcia (3.4%), Cadiz (2.5%), Balearic Islands (2.5%) and Vizcaya (2.4%) stand out. In addition, the animation genre has been the most successful this year, followed by action and comedy.

Most viewed Spanish and foreign films

The list of the most watched movies in theaters in Spain is completed by ‘Odio el verano’, ‘La Familia Beneton’, ‘Ocho Apellidos Marroquís’, ‘El 47’, ‘Casa en llamas’, ‘Menudas piezas’ and ‘La Habitación de al lado’, as far as national cinema is concerned. In general, the 10 most watched films, domestic and foreign, in Spain during 2024, have been, in addition to ‘Del Revés 2’, ‘Gladiator II’, ‘Vaiana 2’, ‘Dune: Part Two’, ‘Padre no hay más que uno 4’, ‘Robot salvaje’, ‘Kung Fu Panda 4’ and ‘Romper el círculo’.
