The storms recorded during the first days of January 2026 have again caused damage to the pedestrian walkway on the beach of Talamanca, in the municipality of Ibiza, as reported by the City Council. The detachment affects a section of about twenty meters long and has also caused partial damage to the wall that serves as support and separation between the walkway and the terrace of a nearby establishment.

In view of this situation, the Ibiza Local Police proceeded on Tuesday, January 6 to seal off the affected area, in order to ensure the safety of pedestrians and prevent access to an area that presents a risk of new landslides.

The councilman of Beaches of the City Council of Ibiza, Ruben Sousa, explained that the damage has occurred in the same section of the walkway that was already damaged by the storms recorded in 2024, which shows the fragility of this point against episodes of strong waves and bad weather.

After a first technical inspection, the Consistory has found that the damage is not only limited to the structure of the footbridge, but also affects the supporting wall, which is at risk of falling. This circumstance prevents, for the moment, fixing the footbridge definitively without first carrying out actions to secure and stabilize the structure.

The City Council has pointed out that this situation forces to rethink the usual itinerary of the footbridge and to study possible alternatives that guarantee both the safety and the continuity of the pedestrian walkway in the area.

To this end, the Consistory must coordinate with the Coastal Demarcation, the competent body in this area, in order to define the necessary actions and determine the most appropriate solution to restore the passage on the beach of Talamanca.

The Consell de Ibiza has received to date a total of 108 applications for aid for damage caused by heavy rains recorded in the months of September and October. The figure was announced during the meeting of the Consell d’Alcaldes held this Friday at the Town Hall of Sant Joan de Labritja.

As explained by the island councilor Maria Fajarnés in the course of the meeting, the bulk of the requests correspond to individuals and companies directly affected by the DANA. Specifically, 40% of the requests refer to vehicles that have had to be decommissioned, while 30% correspond to damaged homes. The remaining 30% came from companies that suffered losses due to the floods.

The applications are currently being processed and the Consell expects to resolve the files and make payments in the coming days. From the insular institution it has been emphasized that these aids are compatible with other compensations, such as those of private insurances or those of the Consorcio de Compensación de Seguros.

During the meeting, the president of the Consell de Ibiza, Vicent Marí, demanded to the State the publication in the BOE of the declaration of civil protection emergency zone, approved by the Council of Ministers on November 25. The lack of this procedure, he warned, is hindering the streamlining of some administrative procedures that would speed up the payment of aid to those affected.

The Consell de Ibiza has announced this Thursday that the aid for those affected by the floods recorded in late September and October may be requested until next January 8. This was confirmed by the Councilor for Economic Promotion, Municipal Cooperation and Human Resources, Maria Fajarnés, during the presentation of the procedure that will be activated from this Friday, December 4.

The aid has an initial endowment of 5 million euros, from the agreement signed with the Balearic Government, with the aim of providing immediate coverage for the damage caused by the torrential rains that left more than 200 incidents on the island.

Aid to repair damage and support recovery

Fajarnés explained that these contributions are non-refundable and will be awarded on a first-come, first-served basis until the available credit is exhausted. The objective, he pointed out, is «torepair the losses and support those affected, compensating the material and economic damages suffered to facilitate the recovery of homes, vehicles or professional activities».

Among the priority criteria established, preference will be given to families who have had to leave their homes, joint applications between owners and tenants under a rental system, and cases involving adapted vehicles.

Houses flooded by extreme rains in Ibiza with rescuer in the water
Flooding in Ibiza caused by extreme rainfall has left significant damage.

Three lines of support: housing, vehicles and economic activity

The Consell has enabled three types of aid to address the different types of damage:

Housing

2,500 euros will be granted per affected property, provided that they are first floors or single-family dwellings that have suffered direct damage due to flooding.

Vehicles

Those affected by the total loss of their vehicles will be able to access compensation depending on the type of vehicle:

  • 250 euros for mopeds.

  • 750 euros for motorcycles.

  • 1,500 euros for cars and vans.

  • 2,000 euros for adapted vehicles.

3. Self-employed and SMEs

Companies and self-employed workers may receive up to 50% of the accredited damages, with a maximum of 10,000 euros per business. This aid includes expenses related to machinery and equipment, repair works and water extraction works.

More funds if needed

The Consellera pointed out that, if the initial 5 million euros were not enough to cover all the requests, the Consell will work to activate new funds and guarantee support to those affected.

The Commission of Institutional and General Affairs of the Balearic Parliament received this Wednesday the general director of Emergencies and Interior, Pablo Gárriz, who appeared to explain the actions carried out during the episodes of heavy rains that affected Ibiza and Formentera between September 30 and October 13, 2025.

His intervention, requested by the Socialist Parliamentary Group, focused on detailing the technical and operational decisions that were activated during the emergency. Gárriz assured that the Govern acted «with technical rigor, absolute transparency and with a single objective: to protect the citizens».

During his statement, the Director General reviewed the chronology of weather alerts, the activation of the regional civil protection plans and the deployment of resources, including the Military Emergency Unit, mobilized to reinforce the work on the island. He also highlighted the coordination with the security forces, firefighters, municipal services, the Civil Guard and technical staff from different areas of the administration.

The head of Emergencies emphasized that, despite the magnitude of the rainfall – which reached 200 liters per square meter in a few hours –no casualties were reported. He attributed this result «to a greater public awareness» and to the effectiveness of the messages of self-protection spread by the official channels and the media. He also defended the decision to keep schoolchildren in educational centers during the worst of the storm to «avoid risky movements on affected roads».

Gárriz took advantage of his speech to thank the work of the emergency teams, technical staff and volunteers, as well as the collaboration of the Consell de Ibiza and the municipalities of the island. He also announced that improvements in the protocols for future similar situations are already being evaluated.

The mayor of Ibiza, Rafael Triguero, has sent a letter to the Minister of Territorial Policy and Democratic Memory, Ángel Víctor Torres, to request precise instructions on the procedure to be followed by the Consistory after the Council of Ministers declared last November 25 the municipality as a Zone Seriously Affected by a Civil ProtectionEmergency (ZAEPC). The designation responds to the floods and other meteorological episodes that took place between August 26 and November 9, 2025.

In his letter, Triguero explains that the technical and legal services of the City Council have reviewed the regulatory precedents, especially the Royal Decree-Law 7/2024, which regulated the aid after the DANA in the fall of 2024. On that occasion, the Ministry of the Interior published three orders with standardized forms and models to request the compensations, a mechanism that the City Council considers essential to activate now the administrative operation.

Therefore, the mayor asked the Ministry for detailed information on the next steps to be taken by both the General State Administration and the Consistory itself, with the aim that the affected neighbors can access «as quickly as possible» to the financial aid provided for in the ZAEPC declaration, many of them urgent due to the magnitude of the damage.

In addition, Triguero claims clarification on the procedure to be followed by the City Council to benefit from the lines of support to cover the costs assumed by the local administration to cope with the effects of the DANA in the municipality.

Together with the letter, the City Council has sent to the Ministry the technical dossier with the detailed valuation of the damages caused by the storm. The document, previously sent to the Government Delegation in the Balearic Islands, estimates the economic impact of the damages caused between August and November at 29 million euros.

The Executive Council of the Consell Insular de Ibiza has approved this Friday, in urgent and extraordinary session, the bases that will regulate the aids destined to people and companies affected by the damages caused by the DANA and the ex-hurricane Gabrielle. The agreement, agreed with the municipalities of the island, PIMEEF and the Chamber of Commerce, allows to move forward in the activation of the economic support committed to the victims.

The bases establish the criteria and maximum amounts of the subsidies, which will cover three priority areas: up to 2,500 euros per affected home, up to 2 , 000 euros per vehicle and up to 10,000 euros per business. These grants will be financed with the 5 million euros from the agreement signed this week between the Consell de Ibiza and the Govern Balear.

The insular institution remarks that the document has been prepared as a priority due to the high number of incidents recorded in homes, commercial premises and automobiles. The objective, they emphasize, is to offer a quick and effective response to the damages caused by the extraordinary meteorological episode.

The Consell has also announced that the complete bases will be published next week in the BOIB, an essential step to officially open the deadline for submitting applications. Once the extract has been published, the persons and companies affected will be able to start the procedure to apply for the aids.

The insular institution reiterates its commitment to speed up the process as much as possible so that the economic support reaches those affected «in the shortest possible time» and helps to alleviate the damage caused by one of the most intense storms that Eivissa has experienced in recent years.

The Consell de Govern has informed this Friday of the launching, by emergency means, of the works and services necessary to recover the functionality of the watercourses and restore the areas damaged by the heavy floods registered in Ibiza last September 30 and October 11. The intervention, which will be executed immediately, has a budget of 1.78 million euros to be charged to the 2025 regional budgets.

According to the spokesman of the Government, Antoni Costa, the torrential rains of both days caused significant damage to various watercourses and urban areas of the municipality of Ibiza, with significant material damage to hydraulic infrastructures, riverbanks, factory works and drainage systems.

An accelerated procedure due to the severity of the damage

After the rainfall episodes, on October 31, 2025, the Director General of Water Resources sent a detailed technical report from the head of the Public Hydraulic Domain Management Service, assessing the damage and justifying the need to initiate an emergency procedure.

A few days later, on November 6, supplementary documentation was sent to prove compliance with the legal requirements to activate this extraordinary procedure, designed for situations of serious risk or disaster that require an immediate administrative response.

As a result of the process, on November 11, the Councilor for the Sea and Water Cycle ordered the immediate execution of the necessary works and services to restore the functionality of the watercourses and the safety of the affected infrastructures.

Works to restore the functionality of watercourses and to reinforce safety

The package of actions includes the repair of damaged hydraulic infrastructures, the recovery of the banks of the affected torrents, the cleaning and adaptation of riverbeds and the restoration of areas degraded by the floods. It also includes the improvement of drainage systems and masonry works affected by the force of the water.

The purpose of these interventions is to minimize the impact on the population and the territory, as well as to avoid future risks in the event of increasingly frequent heavy rainfall events.

A mechanism designed for emergency situations

The emergency procedure makes it possible to shorten the contracting and execution periods in order to act quickly when there is a danger to public safety or serious damage to essential infrastructures. According to the Government, the activation of this mechanism guarantees that recovery can be carried out without delay and with maximum efficiency.

The Consell de Govern endorses the actions of the Conselleria

With the agreement adopted this Friday, the Consell de Govern confirms and endorses the actions already promoted by the Conselleria del Mar y del Ciclo del Agua to restore as soon as possible the safety and functionality of the channels and infrastructures affected by the floods, thus reinforcing the protection of the municipality of Ibiza against future adverse weather events.

«Coming soon.» This is how the Minister of the Interior, Fernando Grande-Marlaska, in response to the claim of the autonomous regional senator of the Popular Party, Miquel JerezThe Minister of the Interior, Fernando Grande-Marlaska, has called for state aid to alleviate the damage suffered by families, businesses and professionals on the island almost two months after the first storm that has left heavy losses in Ibiza.

The provocative response has been given during the control session in the Senate. «They continue to leave people behind and many families and professionals cannot recover normality. What are they waiting for?«, Jerez has asked Minister Grande-Marlaska.

The senator criticized that the minister, during all this time, «has not been able» to propose to the Council of Ministers the declaration of Ibiza as an area affected by an emergency.

This situation, in his opinion, is«very serious» for three reasons. Firstly, he explained, because the Law of the National Civil Protection System has a clear mandate and it is the Government that has the obligation to promote this declaration and to articulate the aid.

Secondly, according to Jerez, «because there is an equally important moral obligation, that these aids should not arrive when the business has already closed and the self-employed has handed over the key, but should do so when they can save businesses, jobs and life projects».

No date or amounts

The central government did not advance dates or amounts to address the declaration of Ibiza’s catastrophic zone, after the two storms: the ex-Gabrielle squall and the dana Alice.

«Of course, this government is quicker than the autonomous government and I will put one thing on record for you: I am sure that the aid from the Ministry of the Interior and from all the ministries of Spain will arrive before those 5 million that, as you have said, have been committed. What we do not know is when they will arrive», said the Minister of the Interior in the Senate.

In addition, Grande-Marlaska said that it is something that has just happened,» despite the fact that almost two months have passed.

«In the near future, the government will declare an area severely affected by a civil protection emergency,» he promised without giving too much certainty.

La entrada Damage to cars delays part of the compensation for the Danas in Ibiza se publicó primero en La Voz De Ibiza.

]]>
The Insurance Compensation Consortium has already paid 31 percent of the claims filed by those affected by the Danas in Ibiza, as reported by the senator for the Pitiusas, Juanjo Ferrer. To date, 2.7 million euros have been paid to companies and individuals in the municipality, while the agency expects that within a maximum period of four months 80 percent of the victims will have received their compensation.

Follow-up meeting in Madrid

Ferrer held a meeting this Tuesday in Madrid with the general director of Insurance and Pension Funds and president of the Compensation Consortium, José Antonio Fernández de Pinto, and with the general director of the Consortium itself, Flavia Rodríguez-Ponga Salamanca, in order to evaluate the progress of the proceedings and to address the concerns of those affected.

During the meeting, Consortium officials explained that damage to vehicles is the most complex case. The high number of people affected -about 1,300 in Ibiza alone-has caused a collapse in the workshops, which makes it difficult to accurately assess the damage and delays the closure of some files.

Chained storms and unavoidable delays

Another factor that has delayed the process is that the different storms that affected the island occurred with little time difference, a fact that complicates the identification and categorization of the damage of each episode, according to Ferrer after his meeting in Madrid.

Despite these difficulties, the senator highlighted the «good performance of the Consortium», which, he said, «is offering all possible resources so that the affected people and companies can recover normality as soon as possible«.

Aid does not depend on the disaster area

Ferrer also recalled that the payment of indemnities by the Consortium is independent of the declaration of a catastrophe zone, so there will be no delays linked to the absence or presence of such declaration.

The Govern has allocated 2.96 million to the emergency actions carried out after the floods in Ibiza. As reported by the Conselleria del Mar y del Ciclo del Agua, the conseller of the branch, Juan Manuel Lafuente, has presented in Ibiza the balance of the emergency actions carried out on the island after the floods recorded between September 30 and October 16, 2025.

The total amount of 2.9 million euros is divided into two main blocks. On the one hand, 1.7 million euros for the recovery of the affected watercourses and, on the other hand, 1.1 million euros to restore the operation of the sewerage, purification and supply system, severely affected by the dana.

Councilor Lafuente explained that the objective of all the actions was to «restore hydraulic safety, drainage capacity and the functioning of the island’s essential infrastructures in the shortest possible time» and added that «coordination between the Government, the Council and local councils has been fundamental to intervene quickly at all the damaged points».

Repair of watercourses

The actions carried out by the General Directorate of Water Resources have focused on restoring the drainage capacity of the Ibiza and Sant Josep torrents and repairing the damage caused by the accumulation of sediments, the displacement of walls and the dragging of materials.

In the municipality of Ibiza, one of the most critical points has been the torrent of sa Llavanera. In its central area, the flood dragged a large volume of debris that concentrated at the mouth located at Avenida 8 de Agosto.

The EMU carried out an initial emergency intervention, but it was necessary to complete the demolition of the existing roof to allow the complete cleaning of the riverbed and to rebuild the wall affected by the impact of a large pipe that had become embedded in the structure.

On the east branch of the same torrent, the ramp of the Brisol building, whose presence significantly reduced drainage and was one of the factors contributing to the overflow, was demolished. The intervention has included the construction of a pedestrian walkway to maintain connectivity and the repair of damaged pavements and paving.

Also in Ibiza, work has been carried out on the access to the old sewage treatment plant, where the accumulation of loads left the passage unusable and reduced the section of the riverbed. The bottom has been leveled, the lateral walls have been reinforced and a hydraulic closure has been provided to allow maintenance access.

Another point affected was the torrent d’en Capità, both in the section des Prat de Vila and in the industrial area of Can Bufí. In both cases, cleaning works have been completed, removal of materials, repair of damaged elements and conditioning of the connections with the drains that empty into the port, with special attention to the operation of the ‘feixes’ of Prat de Vila, where the accumulation of sediments had altered the historical channels.

At the construction site of the ses Vinyes torrent, under the EI-300 road, the flood left a large amount of material that reduced the section of the infrastructure. The UME cleared the entrance, but it was necessary to complete the removal of the material accumulated inside to ensure proper drainage.

In Sant Josep, the work focused on Begònies street in Playa d’en Bossa. The intense accumulation of water left the storm outlet unusable, so the outlet was rebuilt, a sandbox was installed to facilitate maintenance and the affected pavements were replaced. In addition, action was taken in the Es Jondal torrent to remove a large tree that was obstructing the channel.

Lafuente emphasized that these interventions «make it possible to recover the hydraulic capacity of all the affected points and reduce the risk of new episodes of heavy rains», stressing that «the work has been complex due to the variety of damage and the large number of sections affected».

One million for sanitation

According to what they have added, Abaqua has carried out very extensive actions to recover the operability of all the sanitation and purification facilities of the municipality of Ibiza, which suffered direct damage due to the entry of water and sediments.

The most affected point was the Port pumping station. The flooding of the electrical rooms completely disabled the sewage and rainwater pumps.

In order to keep the system operational, a temporary generator set was installed, new control panels were installed, transformers were replaced, frequency variators were renewed, and damaged sensors and electronic equipment were replaced. The accumulation of sediment required manual intervention in the wells and the removal of large volumes of material.

The pumping stations of the Cero, Jesús and Talamanca collectors were also inoperative to varying degrees. At these points, sand removal, pump repairs, chamber cleaning and replacement of equipment damaged by the water ingress were carried out.

At the Ibiza treatment plant, work was carried out on the recirculation systems, dehydration equipment and flow meters affected by the flooding.

The manager of Abaqua, Emeterio Moles, explained that «the sanitation system of Vila suffered very significant damage in a matter of hours, and it has been necessary to act simultaneously at numerous points to ensure the basic operation of the network». Moles emphasized that «the coordination between administrations and the work of the technical staff have been decisive to avoid major problems».

The dana also damaged one of the strategic elements of the upstream supply. The flow of the Santa Eulària river displaced about 25 meters of the East branch pipeline, tearing off part of the concrete protection and leaving the pipe suspended at several points.

The repair required opening a new access for machinery through agricultural terraces, removing the damaged sections, reconstructing the eroded bed with concrete and gravel and installing new sections of ductile iron pipe with reinforced anchors. During the most critical days it was necessary to carry out extraordinary supply maneuvers from the Sant Antoni and Ibiza desalination plants to compensate for the deficit generated by the failure.

The Ibiza Town Council held an extraordinary plenary session this Thursday in which several initiatives of great impact for the municipality were approved, including an agreement with the Consell Insular valued at 1,003,156 euros to strengthen housing policies. In addition, the green light has been given to a budget amendment of 500,000 euros to meet the urgent expenses arising from the damages caused by the storms Ex Gabrielle and Alice. The total valuation of the damages amounts to 25 million euros, as reported by the Councillor for Trade and Markets, Àlex Minchiotti.

An agreement to expand the supply of housing and facilitate access for young people

Bad weather has once again affected maritime connections in the Pitiusas, this time on a day as special as Christmas Eve. The ferry Ramon Llull of the shipping company Balearia, which was scheduled to depart this Tuesday at 7:30 am from Ibiza to Formentera, has canceled its journey due to the strong wind and the adverse state of the sea.

This is the same service that yesterday also had to be suspended, along with another one operated by Cap de Barbaria. Both cancellations on Monday were due to bad weather conditions, with strong gusts of wind from the northwest that caused yellow alert in the Pitiusas for adverse coastal phenomena. Passengers affected by yesterday’s cancellation of the Ramon Llull, which was bound for Denia, had to change their plans and travel from Ibiza to Valencia, arriving eight hours later than their original itinerary.

Orange alerts in Menorca and Mallorca due to coastal phenomena

Today, Tuesday, the AEMET has activated two orange alerts for coastal phenomena in the north and northeast of Mallorca and Menorca. Waves of up to 12 meters are expected in these areas, especially in the east of Menorca, and winds from the north that could reach 80 km/h. These severe weather conditions are added to the yellow alerts in force in other areas of the archipelago, which complicate maritime operations and could generate new cancellations. Yesterday, in Menorca, the strong wind and swell caused waves of up to 11 meters, which led to the closure of the ports of Maó and Ciutadella for much of Monday. This situation has left the island incommunicado by sea, preventing the arrival of passengers and goods, including large quantities of fresh produce essential for the Christmas holidays.

The strong wind and the bad weather conditions have meant the cancellation of the service between Ibiza and Formentera that was scheduled at 7:30 am on the Ramon Llull of the Balearia shipping company. This is the first and so far the only cancellation of the day. The maritime situation of the channel between Ibiza and Formentera will worsen from 9 o’clock in the morning, so it can not be ruled out that throughout the day end up canceling more services between the pitiusas. And is that very strong winds blow from the northwest in Ibiza and Formentera since early morning. For this reason, the Pitiusas are on yellow alert (IG-0) for strong winds and rough seas.

The consequence of this cancellation affects the route between Formentera and Denia that was to resume the fast ferry at 8:30 am. Thus, the affected passengers will have to sail to Ibiza and then embark to Valencia. Thus, passengers who were expected to be in Denia at 10:00 a.m. will be in Valencia from 6:00 p.m. onwards.
