Ibiza will be the scene of a total solar eclipse on August 12, 2026, an exceptional astronomical phenomenon that has not occurred on the island for 115 years and also coincides with the full tourist season. The combination of these factors has led experts and authorities to warn about the need for advance planning to avoid saturation situations and security problems, especially in crowded enclaves such as the viewpoint of es Vedrà.

As explained in an interview in IB3 the spokesman of the Astronomical Association of Ibiza, Pedro Perez, the eclipse will be visible in a band of about 200 kilometers and will have a total duration of approximately two hours, although the most anticipated moment, the totality, will only last for a minute. This moment will occur at 20.33 hours, coinciding almost at sunset, when the star is only two degrees above sea level, a fact that adds uniqueness to the event.

The expectation generated by the eclipse has raised alarms about the massive influx of people that could be registered in certain parts of the island. Pérez warned that, without proper organization, the day could become a real «total chaos«, especially in areas such as Vedrà, an enclave already very frequented during the summer and which also concentrates a strong symbolic and mystical component associated with this type of phenomena.

In view of this situation, the Astronomical Association of Ibiza has already started meetings with the Consell Insular to identify the most conflictive points and design a security and access plan to manage the event with guarantees. The objective, according to the spokesman, is that the eclipse is experienced as a cultural and scientific celebration, and not as a problem of public order.

The attractiveness of the day will be reinforced by an unusual coincidence: the night of the eclipse will also coincide with the maximum activity of the Perseids, known as the Tears of St. Lawrence, and with the New Moon phase. This combination will make it possible to enjoy almost total darkness after sunset, creating optimal conditions for observing the star shower, without the interference of lunar light.

From the astronomical group stress that this is a unique opportunity for scientific dissemination and astronomical tourism on the island, but insist that the success of the event will depend largely on a rigorous planning. «An event of this magnitude can not be improvised,» said Perez, recalling that Ibiza will only experience an eclipse of these characteristics once per generation.

Palma has been consolidated as the most expensive destination in Spain to stay during the Christmas holidays in 2025, with an average price of 278 euros per night, according to the latest Price Index prepared by the vacation rental platform Holidu.

The Balearic capital tops the list ahead of Barcelona, with an average of 265 euros, and San Sebastian, with 230 euros per night, making it the city with the highest accommodation in the country during these dates.

Madrid, the most sought-after destination

In terms of demand, the report places Madrid as the most sought-after destination for Christmas and New Year’s Eve travel, with an average rate of 222 euros per night.

It is followed by Malaga, with an average price of 164 euros, and Granada, which completes the podium of the most sought-after destinations with an average of 170 euros per night. The ‘top 5’ is closed by Valencia (156 euros) and Benidorm (133 euros).

Andalusia dominates the national ranking

The study also includes a regional analysis, in which Andalusia stands out as the region with the greatest presence among the most sought-after destinations: seven cities appear in the national ‘top 30’, including Malaga, Granada, Seville, Jerez de la Frontera, Cordoba, Cadiz and Conil de la Frontera.

For its part, the Valencian Community contributes six destinations to the ranking, with prices ranging from 109 euros in Peñiscola to 156 euros in Valencia city.

The cheapest options for travel in December

At the opposite end of the price table, Murcia is positioned as the most affordable option for those looking to travel in December, with an average price of 106 euros per night. Following it are Peñíscola ( 109 euros), Conil de la Frontera (113 euros), Cádiz (115.5 euros) and Tarragona (120 euros).

The Holidu report thus reflects a marked difference between destinations during the Christmas period, with Palma leading the increase in the price of holiday accommodation in Spain at a key time for domestic tourism and end-of-year getaways.

Hotel rates in Spain register a moderate decline of 2% during the 2025 year-end period – which includes New Year’s Eve on December 31 and the nearest weekend – compared to the previous year, according to the Hotel Pricing Outlook report prepared by the consulting firm Simon-Kucher.

The study attributes this price correction to the configuration of the calendar, since the celebration of New Year’s Eve on Wednesday means that more vacation days are available to organize a getaway, which reduces part of the spontaneous demand that is usually concentrated on these dates.

At the national level, Madrid and Barcelona lead the way in terms of price reductions, with decreases of 8% and 10%, respectively. Despite this drop, Madrid remains among the European cities with the highest hotel rates and ranks fourth in the ranking, behind only London, Paris and Amsterdam. The British capital tops the list with an average rate of 364 euros per night, although it also recorded a year-on-year drop of 10%.

In contrast to the peninsular trend, the Canary Islands consolidated its position as the most expensive destination in Spain, with a median rate of 378 euros per night, a 10% increase over the previous year. Also noteworthy are the price increases in Alicante (+19%) and Valencia (+4%), while Seville (-2%) and Malaga (-4%) showed more moderate adjustments. For its part, the Balearic Islands maintained stable prices at the end of the year.

Simon-Kucher’s technical analysis points to greater stability in four-star hotels, while the most pronounced fluctuations, both upward and downward, are concentrated in economy category establishments.

The consulting firm points to the existence of a «commercial bifurcation» in the hotel sector: the luxury segment continues to show solid growth, while the economy brands suffer setbacks in both occupancy and average daily rate (ADR).

Looking ahead to 2026, the industry anticipates a «two-speed demand» scenario , which will force hotel chains to fine-tune their commercial and pricing strategies to adapt to an increasingly segmented market.

Tourism in Ibiza withstands the impact of climate change https://lavozdeibiza.com/current-news/tourism-in-ibiza-withstands-the-impact-of-climate-change/ Mon, 29 Dec 2025 09:54:56 +0000 https://lavozdeibiza.com/sin-categorizar/tourism-in-ibiza-withstands-the-impact-of-climate-change/ While agencies from Germany and the United Kingdom are warning the Balearic Government of a possible change of trend due to heat waves in the summer, the island's director of Tourism, Juan Miguel Costa, says that there is no concern in the sector in Ibiza.

La entrada Tourism in Ibiza withstands the impact of climate change se publicó primero en La Voz De Ibiza.

]]>
The warnings of international tour operators to the Government about the effects of extreme heat on summer tourism in the Balearic Islands contrast, for the moment, with the situation observed in Ibiza. This is what the insular director of Tourism, Juan Miguel Costa, assures, who rules out that the high temperatures have had a significant effect on the reservations.

«We haven’t noticed a significant drop in bookings, nor when you talk to the sector is there any concern or worry in that sense,» he says to La Voz de Ibiza.

The island official recognizes that there is a certain «buzz» about changes in consumer habits, especially in August, and that some tourists with greater purchasing power are traveling less, but considers that there is no data to speak of a direct impact of the heat on booking decisions.

«From there to thinking that this represents a very significant percentage or that bookings are being shifted to other destinations because of the hot hours, the truth is that they are not,» adds Costa.

International tour operators warn of a «tipping point».

According to the newspaper Última Hora, tour operators from Germany and the United Kingdom have begun to convey to the Balearic Government their concern about the «loss of comfort» experienced by some clients during the hottest summer months.

The DRV association, which brings together German travel agencies, has pointed to a «tipping point» in 2025 and warns of a growing shift of tourists to cooler destinations, such as the Alps or the Baltic.

From the UK, ABTA and major operators such as Jet2Holidays or TUI UK have admitted to be reconsidering their plans for the high season due to extreme heat alerts. In parallel, the lengthening of the tourist season is gaining prominence as a way to offset the pressure of the summer.

Ibiza avoids the effect of climate change

In the case of Ibiza, the island management does not share the diagnosis of international tour operators for now. Juan Miguel Costa stresses that «it is something that has not been communicated directly to us«, and that the market remains stable, with no signs of concern on the part of hoteliers or local operators.

In the face of international pressure to revise tourism strategies in the face of climate change, Costa insists that bookings show no anomalies: «We have not noticed a significant drop in bookings, nor when you talk to the sector is there any concern or worry in this regard.

The Balearic Government admits a «limited» impact

The Government’s Director General of Tourism, Miquel Rosselló, has acknowledged that heat waves can have an effect on a certain segment of the market, but believes that their impact remains limited.

«It may affect, but we still have a product with sufficient solvency to have a significant impact,» Rosselló tells Última Hora.

The regional government also points to a possible saturation of the high season model as the cause of the slowdown in growth.

«The sector notes that we have reached a top level, with high prices and a limited supply in terms of number of places,» says Rosselló, who considers that the margin for growth in volume is already scarce.

Ibiza faces the Christmas holidays with a remarkable tourist demand, despite the fact that most of its hotel offer remains closed during the winter. Currently, only between 3% and 5% of the island’s hotel plant is still operational, which is equivalent to about thirty establishments, mainly urban hotels and agritourisms, which concentrate tourist activity at this time of the year.

Occupancy figures are positive, averaging between 60% and 80% during the holidays. In the case of urban hotels, the balance is even more favorable, with an increase of 10% over last year. For the period between Christmas Eve and Epiphany, occupancy is around 70%, although the moment of greatest demand will come on New Year’s Eve, when many establishments expect to hang the full house sign , according to a report by IB3.

This occupancy peak has had a direct impact on prices. Hotel rates for the night of December 31 have increased significantly, with prices ranging from 135 euros for a basic room to 530 euros for the highest category options. Visitors who choose Ibiza on these dates have an average stay of three and a half days and mostly respond to a senior tourist profile , quiet and away from the nightlife tourism of the summer.

In terms of origin, domestic tourism has a significant weight thanks to the active air connections during the winter and represents around 30% of the clients in some hotels. The rest of the demand comes mainly from European markets, with a special presence of Dutch, Italian, English and German tourists.

La entrada The hotel sector of the Pitiusas closes a good season and warns about the lack of housing for workers se publicó primero en La Voz De Ibiza.

]]>
The 2025 tourist season has closed with a mostly positive balance for the hotel sector in Ibiza and Formentera, which has managed to improve the results of the previous year in occupancy and turnover. This is reflected in the report presented by the Hotel Federation of the Pitiusas, which highlights a particularly favorable evolution in Formentera, Santa Eulalia and Ibiza.

Nearly half of the establishments surveyed consider the season to have been better than that of 2024, while negative assessments remain at low levels. The document stresses that the stability of demand and the strength of some issuing markets have been key to sustaining the good performance of the year.

Stable employment and workforce reinforcement

Employment has been one of the main highlights of the closing of the season. According to the report, 74.6% of the hotels have maintained their staff, while 22.8% have increased their hiring. Only 2.6% of the establishments acknowledged having cut jobs.

Staff increases have been concentrated mainly in Sant Antoni, Sant Joan and three-star hotels, which, according to the Federation, reflects a demanding season from an operational point of view and with high levels of activity during the busiest months.

Housing, the main challenge for 2026

Despite the positive balance, the sector identifies important challenges for the coming seasons. The lack of affordable housing for workers has become the main concern of hoteliers and is a factor directly related to the difficulty of attracting and retaining personnel.

This problem is compounded by other recurring challenges, such as the shortage of qualified profiles, the increase in general and labor costs, and competition from non-regulated accommodation, which continues to cause concern among establishments.

Mobility and tourist environment

The report also includes a critical assessment of mobility on the islands. The availability of parking, public transport and traffic on the main roads are the aspects worst rated by the hotel sector. In contrast, the cleanliness of the beaches and public safety maintain higher levels of satisfaction.

Request for solutions and institutional collaboration

Faced with this scenario, the Hotel Federation of the Pitiusas has reiterated its willingness to collaborate with the administrations to promote practical and short-term solutions to ensure the competitiveness of the destination and the welfare of both workers and residents.

Among the priorities identified are the creation of housing for seasonal personnel, the development of specific training and recruitment plans, the strengthening of the regulation of unregulated accommodation and the implementation of an island mobility plan to improve transportation and access.

«This year’s result has been good, but we know that the success of the coming seasons will depend on our ability to solve problems that are already structural,» says the Federation.

He concludes: «Access to housing has become the main urgency. Without workers there are no hotels, and without housing there are no workers».

La entrada Ibiza and Formentera break spending records and consolidate tourism beyond the summer season se publicó primero en La Voz De Ibiza.

]]>
Ibiza and Formentera closed the first ten months of 2025 with historic figures. Tourist spending reached 4,473 million euros, according to official data from the EGATUR survey published by IBESTAT, the highest value ever recorded in that period. And that exceeds the accumulated for the whole of 2024, when spending was 4,334 million. October’s performance, with a notable increase in spending and a rebound in tourists, consolidates the trend that the Consell de Ibiza has been defending for months: the island is managing to smooth the seasonal curve and attract visitors outside the summer peak.

A particularly strong October

The tenth month of the year left 405 million euros in tourist spending, 15% more than in October 2024, a leap difficult to see in the middle of the traditional low season. The average expenditure per visitor stood at 1,286 euros, while the average daily expenditure reached 202 euros, reinforcing the idea of a tourist with greater consumption capacity.

Despite this slight decrease in hotel overnight stays in October (-1.3%), the number of travelers did not stop growing: the Pitiusas Islands received 315,000 tourists that month, 10.4% more than a year earlier, with a special pull from the international market (258,000 visitors, with increases in the main European issuers).

This greater flow of tourists, coupled with the increase in the price of accommodation rates, helps to explain that the total expenditure is soaring. As recalled on Radio Ibiza the island director of Tourism, Juan Miguel Costa, this new record responds both to the rise in hotel prices and to the fact that the visitor who chooses the ends of the season «is usually of a medium-high purchasing power».

Tourist rebound and clear signs of deseasonalization

The flow of visitors also showed a solid performance. Although the specific October arrivals figures for the Pitiusas must always be read within the framework of the FRONTUR statistics, the national and Balearic trend of that month -a generalized increase of around 10% year-on-year in Spain- is also reflected in the archipelago, where the inflow of international tourists recovered dynamism after a more irregular summer.

The combination of higher spending, better performance in the autumn months and growth in international tourism, together with a more pronounced drop in domestic tourism, confirms the movement that island institutions have been announcing for some time: visitors arriving outside the summer tend to be more loyal, more stable and with a larger budget.

Ibiza, beyond the summer

From the Consell de Ibiza, the reading is clear. After various promotional meetings, especially at fairs such as the World Travel Market in London or FITUR, the institution argues that the figures begin to reflect the effects of its strategy:

  • more activity in spring and autumn,

  • promotion of sports tourism,

  • greater promotion of culture and heritage,

  • bets on landscape, nature and wellbeing,

  • and a sustained campaign for Ibiza to be perceived as an attractive destination during the twelve months of the year.

The Consell itself has insisted on several occasions that the degree of loyalty of the «off-season» visitor exceeds that of the midsummer tourist, which strengthens the local economy in traditionally weaker periods.

The performance of 2025 suggests a more profound change than the simple «end of a good season». Record spending in the first ten months of the year, coupled with the strongest October in the series, points to a stabilizing tourism model that generates less pressure in July and August and redistributes economic activity throughout the year.

For the productive sectors, this transition means more stable income, less dependence on summer peaks and more room to plan staffing and operations. For the island, it means reducing the burden on infrastructure, services and natural resources.

Balearic Islands has received between January and October a total of 15.2 million international tourists, representing a growth of 2.51% over the same period last year. The arrival of foreign visitors left in the community more than 20,400 million euros, up 5.1%, according to data published Wednesday by the National Statistics Institute (INE).

Slight decline in October, but second best record in history

In October, the archipelago received slightly more than 1.5 million international tourists, a decrease of -1.72% compared to the same month in 2023. Associated spending also fell slightly, to just over 2,000 million euros, down 1.6%.

Despite this drop, the balance of October continues to be exceptional: it is the second best historical figure for both arrivals and spending for an October in the Balearic Islands, which consolidates the strength of the destination at the end of the tourist season.

Higher daily spending and stays over six days

Tourists visiting the Balearic Islands in October spent an average of 195 euros per day, 3.64% more than in the same month last year. The average stay stood at 6.83 days, and total spending per person reached 1,330 euros, a slight increase of 0.18%.

These data reflect a trend of higher spending per visitor, even in a context of a slight decline in the number of arrivals.

Balearic Islands, second most visited destination in Spain

In the country as a whole, Catalonia was the community most visited by international tourists up to October, accounting for 21.41% of the total. It was followed by the Balearic Islands, with 17%, and Andalusia, with 15.39%.

The position of the Balearic Islands as the second national destination confirms the relevance of the archipelago in the international tourism market and its weight in the sector as a whole in Spain.

Binter has joined Black Friday with one of the most aggressive promotions this season for travel to the Canary Islands. The Canary airline has launched its Flight Friday campaign, an initiative that puts on sale tickets from 29 euros for residents in the Balearic Islands and from 56 euros each way (buying round trip) for peninsular routes, «until December 1» and to fly «between January 12 and March 31, 2026».

An opportunity that comes in the midst of the expansion process of the company, which since 2018 has strengthened its presence in peninsular territory and in 2024 opened its first base outside the Canary Islands, in Madrid, operating 16 daily flights with the capital from Terminal 2 of Adolfo Suárez-Barajas airport.

Unstoppable growth: Binter now connects 18 mainland cities with the Canary Islands

The airline, founded in 1989 as a subsidiary of Iberia, began an independent path in 2002 and since then has consolidated its leadership in flights between the Peninsula and the archipelago. Today, it covers one out of five routes in this air corridor and offers connections that have transformed mobility to the islands.

With its Black Friday offer, Binter allows you to fly from almost all over the country thanks to its growing network of destinations. The promotion includes departures from:

  • Madrid

  • Vigo

  • A Coruña

  • Asturias

  • Santander

  • San Sebastian

  • Pamplona

  • Zaragoza

  • Valladolid

  • Valencia

  • Badajoz

  • Córdoba

  • Murcia

  • Seville

  • Grenada

  • Jerez de la Frontera

  • Mallorca

The company recalls that «tickets can be purchased from 56 euros each way buying round trip», while «for flights from Madrid, prices start from 60 euros» and «from Mallorca, residents can fly from 29 euros».

How to buy tickets: deadlines, channels and requirements

The Flight Friday campaign will be available until December 1, 2025, so the purchase window is limited. The discounted flights cover a total of 112 weekly operations, with special prominence of the 16 daily flights between Madrid and Tenerife North or Gran Canaria.

Purchase channels available depending on the company:

To ensure the lowest prices, the company insists that the promotional fare is obtained by buying round trip. In addition, it will be essential to «consult offer and residence conditions for specific discounts», especially in the case of travelers from the Balearic Islands.

Exclusive advantage: inter-island connection at no additional cost

One of the most attractive points of the promotion is the possibility of flying between islands without paying more. The airline confirms that passengers will be able to enjoy «inter-island connecting flights at no additional cost», an advantage that allows them to land on one island and continue their journey to another at a bargain price.

This allows, for example, to fly to Tenerife from Madrid and then connect to La Palma, El Hierro, Lanzarote or Fuerteventura while maintaining the promotional fare.

Flying in ‘canary mode’: more comfortable aircraft and premium service

Another element that differentiates Binter from its competitors is the onboard experience. In this Flight Friday the company will operate with its fleet of Embraer E195-E2, a model recognized for its comfort thanks tomore space between rows, theabsence of central seat andgourmet snack included . A way of flying that the airline calls «canary mode», and that emphasizes a warmer and quieter onboard service.

The combination of factors (low prices, free inter-island connection, increased routes and a comfortable fleet) makes Flight Friday one of the most powerful Black Friday travel deals in Spain. Added to this is the possibility of traveling in low season, an ideal time to enjoy mild temperatures, quiet beaches and cultural experiences without overcrowding.

In addition, destinations such as Tenerife, Gran Canaria, La Gomera or Lanzarote have established themselves as winter havens for short getaways or extended vacations.

For those looking for winter sun, volcanic nature, Canarian culture or just a relaxing getaway, this may be the perfect time to book.

The City Council of Sant Josep de sa Talaia held this Friday its traditional Tourism Board, which took stock of the tourist season 2025 and put on the table the main challenges for 2026. The event, which took place at the Sant Jordi cultural center, brought together representatives of the tourism sector, employers and local businessmen.

During the meeting, the participants gave a positive assessment of the season’s data, highlighting the stability in occupancies and an increase of 0.8% in cumulative air traffic. In addition, the promotional actions developed this year by the consistory were highlighted, including the presence at the World Travel Market in London and the launch of the new campaign «Sant Josep Full of Life«.

«We continue to work for an orderly, sustainable and balanced tourism model,» said the mayor, who recalled the municipal commitment to improving services such as mobility, beach management and institutional coordination.

Demands of the tourism sector

Despite the good data, industry professionals agreed on several critical points that require urgent attention. Among them, they highlighted:

  • The need to make progress in deseasonalization in order to better distribute tourist pressure throughout the year.

  • Structural problems in public transportation, especially during high season.

  • The planning of cab services in the face of high demand during peak months.

  • Difficulties in finding qualified personnel, a growing challenge for the hotel and restaurant industry.

  • The renewal of beach concessions, a recurring concern among coastal entrepreneurs.

The active participation of the island director of Tourism Promotion of the Consell de Ibiza, Juan Miguel Costa, brought an insular vision to the event, although the main focus revolved around the municipal analysis. Costa took the opportunity to present to the attendees the new destination management system, a pilot project that will be developed throughout the island in the coming years.

Horizon 2026

With these data on the table, the City Council insists that its objective for 2026 is to consolidate quality tourism, capable of coexisting with residents and of better distributing economic benefits without saturating public services or urban centers.

The mayor assured that «public-private collaboration will be fundamental to face the challenges ahead» and encouraged all agents to «continue contributing ideas and proposals in sectorial roundtables such as today’s».

The Consell de Govern has approved this Thursday the granting of a direct subsidy of 100,000 euros to the Consell Insular de Ibiza to finance the Escuela Universitaria de Turismo de Ibiza, the only higher education center in tourism available on the island and attached to the Universitat de les Illes Balears (UIB).

The spokesman of the autonomous Executive, Antoni Costa, explained that this contribution responds to the desire to support a sector considered strategic for the Balearic Islands and the need to facilitate access to university studies in the Pitiusas. The insularity, he recalled, is an added economic burden for students who are forced to move to Mallorca due to the lack of local training offer.

The University School of Tourism allows students to pursue degrees and specialized training without leaving Ibiza, which significantly reduces the costs of accommodation and transportation for families. Therefore, the Government considers that the aid is «fully justified» and responds to the public interest.

The grant, requested by the Consell de Ibiza to the Directorate General of Universities, reinforces the institutional commitment to university education and territorial cohesion between islands. The Govern stresses that supporting training in tourism is a commitment to professionalization and the economic future of the archipelago.

La entrada Formentera and Vila’s hotel profitability soars in October while Sant Antoni plunges in revenues se publicó primero en La Voz De Ibiza.

]]>
The tourist season in the Pitiusas closed October with a notable increase in hotel profitability indicators in most municipalities, especially in Formentera and Vila, while Sant Antoni became the only area where revenue per room fell slightly compared to the previous year. This is reflected in the latest data from the Balearic Institute of Statistics (IBESTAT), which analyzes the behavior of RevPAR, the index that measures the average revenue per available room.

Formentera leads growth with 22% more revenues

The biggest increase was recorded in Formentera, where hotels reached a RevPAR of 172 euros, 22% more than in October 2024. The Lesser Pitiusa thus consolidates a particularly strong end of season, marked by high demand and sustained rates even in the final stretch of the tourist calendar.

Vila, the area with the highest revenue per room

Despite Formentera’s growth, it was the hotels in Vila that achieved the highest income for the month, with 205.5 euros per open room, up 14.2% year-on-year. Close behind was Sant Josep, with 195 euros and an increase of 4%, consolidating its position as one of the best-positioned areas in terms of profitability.

In the rest of the municipalities, performance was more moderate:

  • Sant Joan: 160 euros per room

  • Santa Eulària: 143 euros

  • Sant Antoni: 120 euros (the only area with a decrease, 2% less than in 2024).

Falling prices at five-star hotels

The IBESTAT report also reflects a sharp drop in the average daily rate of five-star hotels open in October. The average stood at 269 euros, down 22.7% compared to the same month last year.

Average prices up in most of the Pitiusas islands

In global terms, the average price of the hotel offer in Ibiza and Formentera reached 136.9 euros in October, 3.5% more than in 2024. The breakdown by area shows large differences:

  • Formentera: 159 euros (+65.5%)

  • Sant Josep: 162 euros (-2.9%)

  • Vila: 149.9 euros

  • Santa Eulària: 119 euros (+2.6%)

  • Sant Antoni: 106 euros (+3.6%)

The data confirm that, despite the decline in the luxury segment and the occasional drop in Sant Antoni, hotel profitability continues to rise in the final stretch of the season and leaves a particularly positive closing of October for most tourist areas of the Pitiusas.

]]>
The president of the Consell de Ibiza, Vicent Marí, defended at the Spain 360 Forum that Ibiza has reached a turning point after decades of transformation from an agricultural society to become a global tourist destination. In his speech he explained that tourism, a source of prosperity for years, is becoming a problem when it directly impacts residents and the territory, a situation that demands immediate responses.

Marí said that the future sustainability of the island depends on maintaining in balance «a triangle formed by citizens, tourists and territory», and warned that this balance is being broken. He pointed out that the transition from sun and beach tourism to a higher quality model was the first structural change, but that current tensions make it necessary to intervene to avoid irreversible pressure.

Fight against intrusion

The president stressed that the origin of the current social tension is citizen dissatisfaction, caused in large part by the mass marketing of tourist apartments. Marí recalled that, to address this, in 2019 the Office to Combat Intrusiveness was created, a decision he described as «essential» to curb the growth of unregulated supply. Thanks to the sustainable tourism tax, a multi-year plan was launched that incorporated inspectors, administrative and more control capacity in the municipalities, strengthening institutional action.

The president stressed that this offensive has been possible thanks to the collaboration with vacation rental platforms. Airbnb and Booking withdrew 3,000 illegal offers and about 15,000 beds, a volume that, according to Marí, has allowed to clean the market and improve coexistence. He defended that «it has to be a regulated and regulated market», and that the purification of places has not only reduced pressure, but has also increased tourism revenues.

Another of the measures presented was the regulation of traffic. Marí recalled that between June and September thousands of vehicles arrive in Ibiza from the mainland, which saturated the road network. The law passed in 2024 set for the first time a maximum quota of 20,168 vehicles in summer, preventing the entry of about 32,000 additional cars. This control, he said in statements collected by Diario de Ibiza, marks «a crucial step» towards a more sustainable mobility model, which protects the daily lives of residents.

On housing, Marí warned that workers’ settlements in caravans or camps «cannot be normalized», and defended that the labor market must be accompanied by adequate housing conditions. He called for dialogue between administrations and the private sector to guarantee decent housing, recalling that «whoever is in a position to offer a job must ensure that the worker lives in adequate conditions».

Marí also emphasized that «tourism is managed, not questioned». The president insisted that Ibiza must not renounce to remain a leading destination, but it must assume that its size and territorial fragility make it essential to plan, organize and anticipate in order not to compromise its future.

Ibiza maintains its global leadership in nightlife. This was demonstrated this Wednesday when it swept the board at the Golden Moon Awards 2025, consolidating its world domination. But it must face increasingly complex challenges in order not to lose its advantage in the face of new destinations emerging in the Mediterranean.

So says David Lopez, deputy director of Costa Este, in a detailed reflection on the present and future of the island. He does so after his participation in the 10th International Nightlife Congress, held in Valencia, where the role of Ibiza was once again at the center of the debate.

From his experience as an entrepreneur close to the Ibiza ecosystem and with years of work in the leisure industry, López analyzes the success in extending the season, the structural problems of housing and employment, the impact on the quality of leisure and the growing pressure from other countries that aspire to compete with Ibiza.

«Ibiza has been able to extend the season»

In his diagnosis, Lopez first highlights the positive: the island has managed to break the seasonality that historically marked its tourist activity. «Ibiza has been able to do one thing very well, which has been, above all, to extend the season,» he states clearly.

He explains that in the past, the activity was practically limited to the summer months: «It was limited to the summer. We would start in San Juan or a little earlier and finish in mid-September». That scheme has changed radically: «We have already managed to start at Easter, the concept of the openings that has a lot of strength, the closing until the end of October if we can,» he points out.

A real benefit for the island

Lopez believes that this expansion boosts the economy, promotes employment and diversifies tourism. «All of this gives people more options to be able to go for a few days beyond the summer… this helps, gives life and generates employment, boosts restaurants and overnight stays in hotels«.

He even adds a personal perspective: «Enjoying the island in May, September, October or even April is a joy. I almost like it better than in the middle of summer». In his opinion, it is essential to move forward in this direction: «We must continue along this path and make the season even bigger if we can.

Housing and employment, the two major bottlenecks

After the advantages, comes the concern. Lopez is very clear: housing is the biggest problem for Ibiza today. «What is happening with housing, with security, you have to fit a lot of pieces in there,» he warns.

He recalls how many of his group’s workers used to ask him for leave in Barcelona to «do the season» in Ibiza: «In Ibiza they make me work a lot but in three months I earn a little money, I get a sack that gives me nine months of university, they used to tell us».Even if you are well paid, there is a very serious problem with finding a place to live. It is no longer profitable to do the season and some professionals are already thinking that it is not profitable for them to go there. «.

Direct impact on the quality of leisure

The housing crisis has an immediate effect: lack of personnel. «That makes it difficult for employers to be able to find staff to then be able to provide the quality and quantity of service that is often demanded,» he says.

It also affects emerging artists: «Certain artists cannot afford to come because they are not yet at top 50 or top 100 levels.» And it translates into an impact for the visitor: » Hotels, overnight stays and temporary apartments become more expensive. The public may end up spending three days where they would go for a week. «.

Mediterranean competition tightens

Lopez also warns that Ibiza’s leadership is not eternal and that the island is no longer alone. «Ibiza has been facing a lot of competition in the Mediterranean: Croatia, Greece, Malta and Cyprus are betting big«.

Although he admits that they do not yet match the island, the pressure is real: «They probably still don’t catch up with Ibiza, but Ibiza cannot sleep» In his opinion, the island’s strength lies in its history, its professionalization and its cultural structure: «We have a lot to learn from its history.Ibiza has a very powerful industry, a very strong trajectory, a very big experience. It is not easy to compete «.

And he stresses that his position remains global: «All the big promoters, artists and operators count on Ibiza. It’s often the springboard for replicating things in the Caribbean or Asia. «.

«The leadership is there, but you have to work hard to keep it.»

Despite the challenges, López is optimistic. Ibiza, he insists, maintains a competitive advantage built up over decades, but it requires vigilance, strategy and public-private collaboration. «I believe it does, that it continues to be seen as a vanguard, but we will have to keep working hard to maintain that leadership,» he concludes.

In an industry where destinations compete every year for programming, talent, image and management capacity, his message is clear: Ibiza is a leader, but also human, vulnerable and subject to internal and external pressures. And as he sums it up: «Ibiza cannot sleep«.

Ibiza. Just saying the name evokes powerful images. Legendary nightclubs. DJs who are superstars. Sunsets in Sant Antoni. Turquoise water beaches in Formentera.

We have been the world capital of leisure and music for decades. But what if I told you that the concept of «leisure» in Ibiza is in full mutation?

It’s not that the party is dead, never! Carl Cox and The Martinez Brothers are still our kings. But a new type of visitor is being born. One that seeks luxury, exclusivity and a more personal, more technological form of entertainment.

Clubbing is no longer the only religion. Luxury digital entertainment is becoming the new gospel.

The ‘Premium’ Visitor has Changed

Let’s be clear: mass tourism, that of the botellón in Sant Antoni , is a model that the island is actively trying to manage and limit. The future, as discussed at every Ibiza Tourism Forum, lies in the quality visitor.

And who is this visitor?

  • It is someone who stays in the new 5-star Grand Luxury hotels.
  • It values gastronomy, sustainability (coastal cleanup initiatives) and wellness.
  • You are hyper-connected. You don’t come to «disconnect» from the world; you come to «connect» in a more luxurious way.

This visitor works from his yacht, closes deals from his villa and, when relaxing, demands premium entertainment. And that entertainment, today, is digital.

From VIP Table to VIP Online

The luxury experience in Ibiza has always been about exclusivity. Paying thousands of euros for a VIP table at a club is not about the drink; it’s about the space, the service, the feeling of being on a higher level. That same mentality is carrying over into the digital world.

This visitor is not satisfied with slow Wi-Fi. He demands a fiber optic connection in his villa. He’s not satisfied with the hotel TV; he wants his Netflix account, his video games in the cloud and…. yes, his access to exclusive forms of digital entertainment.

Let’s think about the Casino of Ibiza. It is an institution. It offers luxury entertainment (roulette, blackjack, poker) in a spectacular physical environment.

Now, let’s imagine that same experience, but digitized. The high-net-worth visitor is used to high-end iGaming and gambling platforms in his home country. When he comes to Ibiza, he expects to be able to continue with his leisure.

They are not looking for just any app. They are looking for the «VIP table» of the internet. They are looking for sophisticated international platforms, with impeccable customer service and global markets. They want to bet on the NBA final, a Formula 1 Grand Prix or the US Open golf tournament, all while sunbathing in Talamanca.

It’s a global entertainment market. If you want to understand the type of premium platforms this audience uses, click here to see examples of the level of service they demand. It’s the same logic as the club: exclusivity and quality.

Ibiza’s Challenge: Digitizing Luxury

Ibiza and Formentera: The Leap from Party to Digital Luxury Tourism

For the islands of Ibiza and Formentera, the confluence of economic and social trends presents an unprecedented opportunity for growth. The recent BBVA Research report underscores an inescapable reality: the economy of the Pitiusas is in a phase of remarkable acceleration. Quality tourism is the undisputed driving force behind this positive dynamic, attracting a visitor with greater purchasing power and a search for sophisticated experiences.

However, to ensure the sustainability and capitalization of this momentum, it is crucial to transcend the one-dimensional image of the «fiesta» which, while part of the island’s history, can no longer be the sole strategic pillar. We cannot afford to rest on our laurels. The future demands a broader and bolder vision, focused on service excellence and cutting-edge technology.

To keep this engine running and transform it into a turbine of prosperity, a three-pronged modernization strategy is required:

  1. State-of-the-art Digital Infrastructure: The global competitiveness of the destination depends directly on its connectivity. We need to invest aggressively to ensure that Ibiza and Formentera have the best and most robust digital connectivity in the entire Mediterranean. This includes ultra-fast fiber optics in rural areas, premium 5G coverage and high-density Wi-Fi networks in all key leisure and accommodation hotspots. A luxury guest today expects a seamless and uninterrupted digital experience, essential for teleworking, HD streaming and, crucially, high-end digital entertainment.
  2. Service Training for the Digital Age: Service quality must reflect the price and prestige of the accommodation. The staff of luxury hotels and villas must evolve from being mere receptionists or traditional concierges to become true «digital concierges». This implies specialized training not only in languages and luxury protocols, but also in the management of digital platforms, smart-home solutions (home automation), remote assistance and the curation of phygital experiences (physical and digital). Its mission is to be the human and expert link with the digital universe that the guest brings with him.
  3. Adaptive Regulation to the New Leisure: Technology has blurred the boundaries of entertainment. We must understand, and not fear, this new leisure landscape that transcends the physical space. While the Balearic Government, through its Gaming portal, has laid the groundwork for regulating physical gaming (casinos, bingos, etc.), digital leisure and online gaming are an unavoidable global reality. Our visitors, who may be great enthusiasts of e-sports, cryptocurrencies or digital gambling, require a regulatory environment that, without being permissive, is sympathetic to the dynamics of these activities. Ibiza needs to position itself as a destination that welcomes, understands and provides a framework of security and legality for these new forms of leisure that are consumed «in the cloud».

Ibiza’s future is not limited to consolidating itself as the world capital of electronic music; its true aspiration must be to become the world capital of luxury leisure, in all its manifestations. This means harmonizing the physical and the digital. The luxury experience must be as vibrant in the nightclub as it is on the virtual platforms that visitors access from their suite.

In essence, the legendary Ibiza party is not over; on the contrary, it has done more than evolve. It has become more sophisticated, digitized and integrated into a value proposition that ranges from the utmost exclusivity in on-site services to the most advanced digital connectivity.

Ibiza has not finally achieved the title of Pioneer City in Green Tourism for 2026, a recognition awarded by the European Commission to cities that lead the transformation towards a more sustainable, inclusive and innovative tourism model. The winner of this edition has been the Croatian town of Dubrovnik, although the City Council of Ibiza has already confirmed that it will apply again for the 2027 edition.

The Mayor of Vila, Rafa Triguero, and Ruben Sousa, the Councillor for Tourism, went to Brussels to defend the candidacy of the capital of Ibiza and Formentera before the European jury. Ibiza managed to reach the final among more than 50 European cities, a list that was reduced to only eight locations, including Geestland (Germany), Laois (Ireland), Mariagerfjord and Rebild (Denmark), Marmaris (Turkey) and Tartu (Estonia).

«Being among the finalists shows that Europe already sees us as a benchmark city in sustainability and smart tourism. We continue with the clear roadmap,» Triguero highlighted on his social networks.

An award that opens doors

The European Green Pioneer of Smart Tourism award offers the winning city international visibility throughout 2026, access to a European network of best practices, institutional communication support, an official promotional video and an iconic sculpture with the award logo.

Ibiza’s candidacy was presented in September, and its selection as a finalist was already considered a milestone for a Mediterranean island city.

Triguero has publicly thanked the support of MEP Rosa Estaràs, who accompanied the Ibizan delegation during the final phase of the process. The next call, in 2026, will select the city that will hold the title in 2027.

Formentera continues to make progress in its goal of diversifying the origin of its visitors and reducing its historical dependence on the Italian and Spanish markets. This was stated by Juanma Costa, president of the Hotel Association of Formentera, who stressed that the island is increasingly attracting tourists from northern and central Europe, especially from the Nordic countries.

In statements to Radio Illa, Costa explained that this line of work, promoted by the sector for years, is beginning to consolidate. «We are fighting to try to capture markets in these countries,» he said, stressing that this diversification brings stability to the sector and reduces vulnerability to fluctuations in traditional markets.

The president of the hotel employers’ association has assessed the season as «good», with figures very similar to those of last year and an increase of 3% in employment in the overall summer. A result that confirms the soundness of the island’s tourism model, although accompanied by significant changes in booking habits and in the length of stays.

Costa pointed out that direct booking, without the intermediation of tour operators, is already a fully consolidated practice thanks to the greater availability of flights and the flexibility demanded by travelers. This new behavior benefits the customer, but forces hotels to adapt, as it promotes shorter stays and an increase in the volume of arrivals and departures, which in turn raises operating costs.

As for prices, hoteliers start each season with «expected increases», although Costa recognizes that the evolution of the market may force them to adjust rates to remain competitive. Despite this, during this summer there has been a slight increase in hotel prices, less than 5%.

The visitor profile, he says, continues to value above all nature, landscape and the condition of the beaches. In addition, he considers that issues that in previous years generated complaints, such as traffic, have improved thanks to the Formentera.eco system, which regulates the entry of vehicles during the busiest months.

However, Costa insists on a recurring demand from the sector: the need to expand the daytime and nighttime leisure offer, which has been insufficient for years.

The hotel president also addressed the perception of certain economic sectors that indicated moments of lower activity during the season. Costa recalled that the hotel sector controls some 7,000 vacancies, but that there are other types of accommodation – such as holiday homes or short-term stays – that also influence the actual influx of visitors.

At this point, he highlighted an emerging trend: some owners are beginning to allocate their properties to the residential market throughout the year. A movement that responds both to the tightening of controls against the illegal tourist offer and the attractiveness that is gaining the long-term rental. According to Costa, if this trend continues, it could help to alleviate the lack of housing on the island, although he qualifies that it is a «slow» process that will take years to consolidate.

Employment in tourism activities in the Balearic Islands increased by 8.9% during the month of October, reaching 112,230 workers in the archipelago, driven mainly by the rise in salaried employees and the good performance of the tourism labor market at the national level. This is reflected in the data published this Monday by Turespaña, which place the Islands as the second autonomous community with the highest increase in this sector.

More than 112,000 workers linked to the tourism industry

The Balearic Islands closed October with 112,230 people employed in tourism activities, which is 9,190 more than in the same month of the previous year. Of the total, 99,130 are salaried employees, up 10%, while 13,100 are self-employed, with a slight increase of 1.1%.

This growth makes the Balearic Islands the region with the second largest increase in tourism employment in absolute figures, behind only Andalusia.

The Spanish tourism sector exceeds 2.8 million affiliates

The good labor performance is not exclusive to the archipelago. In Spain as a whole, the tourism sector reached 2,855,255 affiliations in October, 3.5% more than in 2023. During the tenth month of the year, employment linked to tourism increased by 96,854 workers, already representing 13.2% of the country’ s total enrollment.

By branches of activity, hotels and restaurants led the growth with an increase of 49,020 workers -18,399 in accommodation services and 30,621 in catering services-. Travel agencies added 1,691 workers, while other tourism activities added 46,143 workers.

Increase in the number of employees and improvement in the quality of employment

Salaried employment, which represents 82.3% of the total number of workers in the sector, showed a significant improvement: it grew by 4.1% with respect to October of last year. The increase was evenly distributed among the main branches:

  • Travel agencies and tour operators: +2.4%.

  • Hospitality: +3.2%.

    • Lodging services: +5%.

    • Food and beverage services: +2.7%.

Self-employment, which represents 17.7% of the total, increased by 1%. In hotels and restaurants, growth was more moderate (0.4%), while in travel agencies it reached 2.7% year-on-year.

Combining hospitality and agencies -which account for 67.1% of total tourism employment-, the overall increase was 2.7%, driven by both salaried employees (+3.2%) and the self-employed (+0.5%).

Generalized growth in all communities

The increase in tourism employment spread to all the autonomous communities during October. In absolute figures, Andalusia registered the highest increase in affiliates, while in relative terms the Balearic Islands led the growth, with 8.9%, followed by Andalusia itself, which recorded a 3.8% increase.

The Pitiusian environmental challenge: Air quality in the residential tourism sector

Ibiza, with its characteristic Mediterranean climate and privileged geographical position, presents particular environmental conditions that directly affect air quality in villas, apartments and rental houses. The combination of high relative humidity, especially during the summer months, with constant exposure to marine salinity and occasional episodes of calima, creates an environment that poses significant challenges for the maintenance of a healthy indoor environment in tourist properties. On an island where the vacation rental sector represents a fundamental pillar of the economy, the ability to offer indoor spaces that combine comfort, healthiness and sustainability has become a determining factor for competitiveness in an increasingly demanding market. Adequate ventilation thus emerges not only as a matter of well-being for occupants, but also as a strategic element for the preservation of the value of properties and the satisfaction of a tourist clientele that is increasingly aware of environmental quality parameters.

Consequences of inadequate ventilation in rental properties

The lack of adequate ventilation in Ibiza rental properties can have significant repercussions for both the tourist experience and the integrity of the buildings themselves. From a customer satisfaction perspective, poorly ventilated spaces can generate stuffy environments, with lingering odors and a feeling of heaviness that negatively affect the vacation experience. Accumulated humidity, particularly in bathrooms and kitchens, favors the appearance of molds and dust mites whose spores and allergens can trigger respiratory problems and allergic reactions among occupants. For property owners and managers, these environmental problems translate into costly repairs, depreciation of property values and, potentially, negative valuations by guests that can seriously affect the future profitability of the property in a market as competitive as the Ibizan one.

Natural Ventilation: Limitations in the Pitiusan Context

Traditional ventilation by opening windows, although apparently the most direct solution, presents important limitations in the specific context of Ibiza. During episodes of easterly or westerly winds, opening the windows can introduce sea salt particles into the interior that accelerate the corrosion of furniture and equipment. On days with calima, this practice introduces Saharan dust that not only affects air quality but also generates an additional cleaning load. In addition, in properties with swimming pools or located near nightlife areas, natural ventilation can introduce noise that affects guests’ rest. During peak tourist months, high occupant turnover limits opportunities for extended ventilation between rooms, creating a vicious cycle of indoor pollutant buildup that can be difficult to break using traditional methods.

Technical solutions adapted to the Pitiusian market

To address the specific challenges of ventilation in rental properties in Ibiza, there are technical solutions that combine effectiveness, energy efficiency and adaptation to the particular island context. Controlled mechanical ventilation systems allow maintaining a constant flow of renewed air without the need for manual intervention by guests, thus ensuring optimal air quality parameters regardless of the ventilation habits of each user. In critical spaces such as bathrooms, where humidity and odor peaks are generated, the installation of a professional bathroom exhaust fan allows these contaminants to be quickly evacuated before they are dispersed throughout the rest of the property. These devices, especially the models with automatic humidity sensors, are activated only when necessary, optimizing both the effectiveness and energy consumption of the system.

Management strategies for owners and managers

Beyond the implementation of technical solutions, owners and managers of rental properties in Ibiza can adopt various strategies to optimize ventilation and indoor air quality. Deep ventilation between rooms, by fully opening the windows during the cleaning and preparation time of the property, allows the air accumulated during the previous occupancy to be completely renewed. The installation of discrete humidity and air quality sensors allows environmental conditions to be monitored and potential problems to be detected early before they affect the customer’s experience. The choice of moisture- and salt-resistant building and décor materials helps prevent structural damage and maintain stable environmental conditions. Finally, training cleaning and maintenance staff in the importance of ventilation and detecting signs of moisture or mold is essential to maintaining consistent standards of environmental quality.

Towards a standard of excellence in pitiuso rentals

The growing attention to indoor air quality in rental properties represents a natural evolution towards a more complete and sophisticated concept of tourism excellence in Ibiza. In a market where competition intensifies year after year, the ability to offer not only privileged locations and quality services, but also healthy and comfortable indoor spaces, can make the decisive difference. Investment in adequate ventilation systems, far from representing an expense, is an intelligent strategy for differentiation and added value that contributes to consolidating the island’s reputation as a first-class tourist destination. Thus, the search for excellence in the Pitiusan rental sector transcends the beaches and coves to go into the very heart of the spaces where tourists and temporary residents breathe, rest and create the memories that will define their experience on the white island.
