The Govern breaks the enthusiasm for underwater wine in Ibiza: When could it become a reality?

Although it has generated attention for its uniqueness, the project to submerge wine in underwater buoys in front of Cala Roja, in the municipality of Sant Josep, has not been authorized for the moment: it is under evaluation and without a date.

This has been confirmed by the Conselleria del Mar y Ciclo del Agua of the Balearic Government, in charge of processing the application for the occupation of 32 square meters of the maritime-terrestrial public domain where it is planned to install 15 watertight buoys between 2026 and 2029 by the company Bodegas BH SL for the maturation of its wine.

“The buoys project, for the moment is only in public exhibition. It does not mean that for the moment it is going to be authorized”, official sources of the Conselleria have declared to La Voz de Ibiza.

Process under evaluation and without defined deadlines

The processing of the file is in the phase of public exposure, during which allegations, observations or reports can be submitted. This period will be extended for twenty working days, counting from the day following the publication of this announcement in the Official Gazette of the Balearic Islands, which took place last Tuesday, November 11.

Only once this step has been taken will the technicians of the General Directorate of Coasts and Coastal Areas be able to begin to assess the project’s merits.

“As for the process of public exposure, we must wait for allegations and all the perceptive reports,” they have indicated from the Conselleria, adding that “once with it, the technicians of the Directorate General and may assess.”

Regarding the deadlines, the Government remarks that there is no specific forecast: “It depends a little on how long it takes to get back to us with the reports, it could be months“.

City Hall without information

Consulted by this media, the City Council of Sant Josep has assured that it has no official knowledge of the project and that it has not received the documentation to evaluate it.

“The City Council has no competence in this area,” said the local administration. “We have no record of the project at the moment and we assume that Demarcación de Costas will send it to us for assessment,” they added.

The proposed location is in municipal waters, in front of Cala Roja, but the scope of competence lies with the regional and state administration, as it is an occupation of the maritime-terrestrial public domain.
