The arrival of a new Atlantic front will mark this Wednesday a day of instability in much of the northern peninsular, where snow will again be the protagonist. The State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) has activated snowfall warnings in four provinces – Lleida, León, Asturias and Huesca –due to the forecast of significant accumulations in mountain areas, especially in the Cantabrian Mountains.
The greatest thicknesses are expected in Leon, where they could accumulate up to 15 centimeters in 24 hours above 1,000 meters. The AEMET maintains the snow warnings also for Thursday due to the persistence of the winter episode. In addition, minimum temperatures will fall to -3ºC in provinces such as Soria and Ávila, with weak frosts in large areas of the northern interior and moderate frosts in the Pyrenees and Iberia.
The front will leave overcast skies in much of the northern third of the peninsula and precipitation that will affect Galicia, the upper Ebro, the northern Iberian, the Pyrenees and especially the Cantabrian area, where they could be persistent. Snowfall is also expected in mountain areas, with a height that will drop from 1,500 meters to between 800 and 1,000 meters at the end of the day.
In the rest of the country a more stable atmosphere will prevail, with intervals of high clouds and morning fog banks in the plateaus, the southeast peninsular and Mallorca. In the archipelagos cloudy skies with occasional showers are expected, less likely in the eastern Canary Islands, where moderate trade winds will blow.
Maximum temperatures will rise slightly in the eastern Cantabrian and the upper Ebro, while they will fall in the rest of the northern third, the Meseta and the west of the peninsula. The wind, from the west and north, will blow with intensity in the Balearic Islands, the Strait, Alboran and the eastern coasts, with likely very strong gusts in the lower Ebro, Ampurdán, Galicia and the Cantabrian.
The combination of snow, cold and wind is creating a wintry outlook that will last for the next few hours in much of the northern part of the country. Do you want me to prepare a shorter version or a more prominent focus for social networks?
