The Plaza de la Constitución in Sant Francesc was the scene, last Thursday, of a demonstration that brought together more than 250 people in front of the Consell de Formentera. The mobilization, organized by the citizen platform Deim Prou!, denounced the institutional paralysis that has affected the island for months and demanded a responsible and effective political management.
Citizen discontent takes to the streets
Under the slogan “A Consell in plenitude”, the protest was called by 23 local entities, from neighborhood associations to cultural and sports collectives. Attendees demanded immediate action to put an end to the misgovernment and ensure that the Consell addresses the real needs of the community, as reported by Formentera Radio. “We are fed up with this situation of paralysis,” stated the movement’s spokespersons in the manifesto read during the event. They stressed that the institutional crisis harms the development of the island and requested respect for an institution that, historically, has been a benchmark in the protection of the territory, culture and social rights.
The controversial participation of Daisee Aguilera
Among the interventions was that of Daisee Aguilera, ex-councilor of Environment of Gent per Formentera. Aguilera, who is currently under investigation for alleged irregularities related to the management of a sailing school without official authorization, participated as spokesperson of the demonstration. During her speech, Aguilera expressed: “We are fed up and we ask for immediate solutions. This institution must function as the Consell that the citizens deserve”. Her intervention was not without controversy, given her status as investigated, although it reflected the feelings of many attendees. The platform Deim Prou! demands a government that guarantees political stability and effective attention to the problems of the island. They also announced that they will continue with mobilizations until concrete solutions are presented to resolve the crisis.
