The PP deputy in Congress Sandra Fernandez has demanded the President of the Government, Pedro Sanchez, to guarantee the necessary resources so that the free public transport is not at the expense of the accounts of Govern or consells.
Fernandez regrets the lack of official information from the Government on the free public transport in the Balearic Islands for 2025, just ten days before the end of the year, and demandsthat resources are guaranteed, the Balearic PP has reported in a statement. According to Fernandez, with this late announcement “the Government demonstrates its total improvisation with the measure and wants to put on a medal that if it does not increase the resources will have to pay other administrations”. The popular deputy, who asked the Government in writing last November what plans it had with the gratuity in the islands, regrets that the response has not arrived until this Thursday, limiting the Government to answer that “it will maintain in 2025 the funding effort in support of public transport in all the territories of Spain, including those of the Autonomous Community of the Balearic Islands, but adapting the budget to the situation with appropriate criteria for its distribution”. Fernandez criticizes that this response does not clarify whether it will guarantee all the necessary resources to make the gratuity effective and recalls that, the last two years the Government has transferred 43 million for free public transport to the islands, which have been “totally insufficient” and have had to be Govern, councils and municipalities, which already assume the basis of the bonuses, which have had to pay the difference. As an example, the deputy recalls that the Govern pays 45 million euros a year in bonuses and that, given the insufficient contribution of the Government for the free bus and train, for 14 million, has had to pay an additional 9 million euros this year. Last year, the additional contribution that had to be made by all the administrations of the islands for the gratuity to be real was 13 million. “We think it is very good that the Government responds to the demands of the Government of Marga Prohens to maintain the gratuity in the islands, but it is essential that on Monday the necessary resources for this measure are guaranteed”, she has claimed about the Council of Ministers in which it is expected to be approved. According to the deputy of the Balearic Islands, the Government“puts the medal of gratuity and who ends up paying are Govern, councils and municipalities, and, ultimately, the citizens of the Balearic Islands”.
