“We have reached a point where the loss of confidence in Mr. Llorenç Córdoba is now total and the situation is unsustainable”. This is how Óscar Portas, who will succeed Córdoba, justified the motion of censure to oust the current president of the Consell.
Portas, the candidate agreed by the political groups of GxF, PSOE and Sa Unió, has pointed out that “it is not an easy day”. “We have been forced to be here by responsibility and commitment to the future of our island. The residents of Formentera observe with concern the evolution of events,” he stressed in reference to the political crisis that the smallest of the Pitiusas has been living for more than a year.
Harsh criticism
Portas has spared no criticism against Cordoba. “This administration, which should be the home of all, has been managed according to the personal whims of its head, who has ignored the consensus, the recommendations of the technicians and, moreover, the opinion of the councilors who have given him support at the time of his investiture,” he said. And he highlighted as “a turning point that exemplifies this loss of confidence […] the controversial awarding of the tender for the exploitation of authorizations and concessions of the beaches of Formentera“. According to the former Minister of Culture and Heritage, Cordoba “ignored the recommendations of the technicians of the Consell and acted unilaterally and contrary to the principles of transparency and good governance that should govern any democratic institution”.
“This is how all Litoral workers came to request a change of work area, unable to continue under the leadership of who should be their main defender and ally,” he added. For Portas, “this situation has been aggravated by an institutional crisis that exploded long ago as a direct result of the actions of the president and the counseling has become a dynamic of paralysis and distrust that we can not allow to continue.”
“We have to be self-critical.”
Although he has not delved into it, Portas has hinted that Sa Unió must make self-criticism: “I want to be clear, we are not here to obviate our part of responsibility. As members of this administration, we all have to be self-critical. And the members of Sa Unió are the first ones”. In that line, Portas has said, “It is clear that we have not been able to avoid this situation before the point where we are today. We accept our mistakes, but we also firmly affirm that we have worked to redirect this administration”. In any case, he emphasized that “the unilateral actions of the president have prevented this collective effort from having the results that Formentera needs”.
A new stage
In turn, Portas thanked “the left-wing forces that have made this step forward possible”. “This motion of censure is not an act against a person, but an act of responsibility for all citizens. It is a gesture of commitment to fix the path of this administration and return confidence to an institution that would never have lost the respect of its people to whom it serves,” he said. And he concluded: “Today we open a new stage. We are aware of the challenges facing Formentera and we are committed to address them with determination, transparency and dialogue. Thanks to all those who have made this step forward possible”.
