The PSOE in the Balearic Islands has assured that it does not see possible an electoral advance in the regiondespite the rumors that have circulated in the last weeks. The president of the Govern, Marga Prohens, has hinted at this possibility, which has generated political uncertainty, especially after the breakdown of agreements between the PP and Vox in various autonomous communities. According to PSOE sources, this maneuver could be an attempt by Prohens to put pressure on Vox after the breakdown of relations at the autonomous level, although they consider that the impact of early elections would be limited. The socialists have pointed out that the move could be counterproductive for the Balearic president, who would be more exposed to the influence of the extreme right.
Possible implications of early elections
From the PSIB, they point out that an electoral call in 2025 would not guarantee Prohens a sufficient majority to govern alone, since she would need new pacts to hold on to power, as reported by El Confidencial. In addition, early elections would only open a transitional legislature that would end in 2027, complicating the political strategy of the PP in the islands. The socialists have also highlighted that, in this scenario, it would be difficult to capitalize on a favorable political climate, considering the recent wave of citizen unrest over governmental managements at both autonomous and state level, and the rise of Vox as a political force in regions with contexts similar to that of the Balearic Islands.
Francina Armengol rules out running for office
One of the unknowns in case of an advance would be the PSIB candidacy. Party sources have assured that Francina Armengol, current president of the Congress, is not willing to leave her post to return to regional politics, which would complicate the definition of socialist leaderships in a context of early elections. The PSOE has stated that it will continue working to consolidate its territorial leaderships with a view to the 2027 elections, with the aim of restoring its position in the institutions, and has pointed out that any movement on the part of the Govern must be focused on solving the problems of the citizens, and not on political maneuvers. Meanwhile, the political environment of Prohens has neither confirmed nor officially denied the possibility of an advance, which maintains the political tension in the islands.
