After more than 16 years of works and an investment of 27 million euros, the inauguration of the Parador de Ibiza is still up in the air. Although its inauguration was expected for the first quarter of this year, according to La Voz de Ibiza , new setbacks have appeared on the horizon.
This has to do with the connectivity to the water supply network. The public entity Turespaña, which operates under the supervision of the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Tourism of the Spanish Government, considers that the work cannot be awarded directly but that a public bidding process must be carried out, despite the fact that there is only one supplier -in this case Aqualia- since it is an administrative concession. Because of this legal mumbo-jumbo, the opening of the water reservoir for the next summer season is at risk. However, this Thursday, in the framework of the International Tourism Federation (Fitur) that is taking place in Madrid, there will be a technical meeting to try to unblock this issue. Sources consulted by La Voz de Ibiza said that everything could be ready for the autumn, although it is most likely that its opening will be postponed to the summer of 2026.
Last phase
In April last year, the central government, through the Ministry of Industry and Tourism, reported that “the Parador of Ibiza faces the last phase of the works for its next opening“. At that time, the Secretary of State for Tourism, Rosana Morillo, visited the works of the Parador of Ibiza, which will become the first establishment of the network of Paradores de Turismo in the Balearic Islands.
This forecast established that, once the works were completed, the project would be transferred to Paradores de Turismo, the organization responsible for fitting out, managing and marketing the hotels in the Paradores network. However, according to La Voz de Ibiza, this administrative step has not yet materialized.
Without crane
Last June,the company Acciona removed the crane from the construction site of the Parador de Ibiza, which has been located there since 2020 and had not been used for months. This was a promise that has been on the table for some time and that in May in May they assured that it would be removedsomething that finally came despite the delay.
The characteristics of Parador Ibiza
It will have 66 rooms and “will generate quality employment, in addition to contributing to the economic revitalization of the area, as it will be a hotel that will be open all year round,” the central government explained. “This Parador will be one of the most emblematic of the network of Paradores de Turismo, with incomparable architectural and technical characteristics”, highlighted the Secretary of State for Tourism, emphasizing the investment made by the Spanish Government to “preserve the historical heritage of the jewel that is Ibiza”.
A long and complex reform
The fortress that crowns Dalt Vila, where the Parador de Ibiza is being built, is one of the most emblematic enclaves of the island. In 2004 it was decided to use this 16th century fortress, which had been closed since the 1980s, as a Parador de Turismo. In 2008, renovation work began, but the discovery of archaeological remains forced them to be halted at the end of 2012, in addition to causing modifications to the initial project that resulted in significant increases in the budget. The works were resumed in December 2019.
“One of the most positive consequences of the construction of the Parador in this place will be the in-depth study of the complex, the museumization of many of the findings and the documentation and preservation of others. This responds to the firm commitment of the Secretary of State for Tourism to study, value, disseminate and make visible the archaeological findings for their knowledge by Ibizans, researchers and visitors to the island,” said the Government.
