The Councilor for Housing, Territory and Mobility, José Luis Mateo, has sent a message of tranquility to the users of public transport. public transport in the Balearic Islands by guaranteeing that the free service in this service of autonomic competence will not be affected by the recent fall of the omnibus decree of the central government. According to Mateo, the Consell de Govern had already approved this measure for the whole of 2025, which ensures its continuity.
A firm commitment from the Govern
During an appearance before the media, the minister stressed that, although the decree rejected in Congress included this measure, the Balearic Government had already assumed the cost of free public transport with an item of 54 million euros, compared to the 14.6 million provided by the central government. “We will not move an inch from this commitment,” assured Mateo, who also criticized the lack of stable agreements at state level to guarantee this funding.
PP initiatives in Congress
The conseller said that the Popular Party will present a new initiative in Congress to consolidate free public transport in the Balearic and Canary Islands, and to increase aid in other autonomous communities. Mateo explained that, although the PP voted against the omnibus decree, the measure was not rejected because of disagreement with the transport, but because of the “motley” content of the norm. The conseller also affirmed that the Govern will continue to work in collaboration with the central government to ensure that the measure is consolidated at the national level.
Pressure on the central executive
Mateo did not hide his discomfort towards the national executive, which he accused of acting with improvisation and of not providing the necessary resources to support the measure in the Balearic Islands. “The current allocation is insufficient, and we need a greater effort from the central government to ensure its sustainability,” he said.
