The Plan de Choque de Lucha contra el Intrusismo promoted by the Consell de Ibiza has been recognized as a reference at state level after the meeting held between the island president, Vicent Marí, and the Minister of Social Rights, Consumption and Agenda 2030, Pablo Bustinduy.

The meeting, held on the island, was also attended by the Minister of Tourism of the Government, Jaume Bauzà, and other institutional representatives, who have shared the strategies implemented in Ibiza to combat illegal tourist rentals.

During the meeting, Bustinduy stressed the importance of coordinating efforts between local, regional and state administrations to address intrusiveness in the tourism sector. In this sense, the Ministry of Consumer Affairs has shared with the Consell and the Govern a digital file with information on more than 7,000 tourist apartments operating in the Balearic Islands without a license, thus facilitating the detection of irregularities.

A model for action against illegal supply

Ibiza has been a pioneer in the fight against the illegal supply of tourist accommodations through its Office against Intrusiveness, created in 2019 with the aim of detecting and sanctioning unregulated tourist dwellings. Since its inception, the agency has managed to remove nearly 800 illegal ads on digital platforms and has processed more than 650 disciplinary proceedings against owners and companies that do not comply with the regulations.

The president of the Consell, Vicent Marí, has stressed that the fight against intrusion not only affects the tourism sector, but also has a direct impact on the supply of housing available to residents. As he explained, one of the goals of the Plan de Choque is to get the properties that are currently rented illegally to move to the residential market, helping to alleviate the crisis of access to housing on the island.

To this end, the Consell has signed agreements with platforms such as Airbnb and Booking for the removal of irregular ads and has promoted the creation of a Table of Intrusiveness, which will be officially presented in the coming weeks. This body will be composed of representatives of public administrations, the economic fabric of the island and the main digital platforms of tourist accommodation.

More resources to intensify surveillance

The Minister of Tourism of the Government, Jaume Bauzà, has announced that the Plan de Choque against illegal supply in Ibiza will have an investment of 4.25 million euros in 2025 from the Sustainable Tourism Tax. These funds will strengthen controls and increase resources for the inspection and sanctioning of irregular activities on the island.

“Collaboration with digital platforms and the strengthening of control mechanisms will allow us to take a step further in the eradication of illegal tourism,” said Bauzà.

For his part, Bustinduy has recognized the work done in Ibiza and stressed that this model can serve as an example for other autonomous communities. “Today we are witnessing a case of institutional cooperation that should inspire other administrations to act against illegal tourist rentals and improve the quality of life of citizens,” concluded the minister.
