A citizen platform of Ibiza has communicated that it is evaluating legal actions against Ecoembes for the management of the Ca na Putxa landfill, as it considers that the contractual non-fulfillment generates effects that could be “harmful, annoying and dangerous” for the neighbors in the area. According to the collective, in a letter sent to the president of the Consell, Vicent Marí, concerns have been raised about the management and possible delays in the implementation of promised solutions. The Hay Soluciones para el Vertedero Platformhas highlighted that the problems related to odors and gas emissions affect thousands of people in the area, with emission sources located less than 200 meters from homes and 800 meters from the urban center of Jesús. In the absence of air quality reports requested from the Consell, the platform has promoted an independent study to assess current conditions and confirm the environmental impact in the area.
Outstanding commitments
At a meeting held in October with representatives of the Consell, measures were discussed such as increasing the gas measurement points and considering the monitoring of the area within the Balearic Air Quality Network, commitments that, according to the platform, have not yet materialized. In addition, they have requested details on the 17 million euro investment project for improvements at the landfill, such as the closure of the negative atmosphere ripening shed, which has not progressed either. The collective has also expressed concern about the possibility of an incinerator being installed in Ibiza, pointing out that the delays in the implementation of improvements could be related to this decision. From the Consell, however, no such intention has been confirmed, although they have reiterated their willingness to address the problems in the area. While they continue to evaluate the possibility of filing a criminal complaint, the platform insists on the need for greater transparency on the part of the institutions and the implementation of concrete solutions to mitigate the effects reported at the Ca na Putxa landfill. The local authorities have not yet commented on the claims, but claim to be working to address citizens’ concerns.
