Ibiza has since Thursday a new state-of-the-art healthcare resource: the Ca na Majora Intermediate Care Center, a pioneering center for the hospitalization and comprehensive care of chronic patients. This space, inaugurated by the Councilor for Health, Manuela Garcia, has 30 single rooms and aims to comprehensively address the specific needs of complex and advanced chronic patients. The project, promoted by the Ibiza and Formentera Health Area, includes an interdisciplinary team of 35 professionals, including nurses, orderlies and specialists such as a geriatrician. This team works in coordination with social services and nurse case managers to offer personalized care focused on the rehabilitation and community reintegration of patients.
Impact on Ibiza’s healthcare system
The new center seeks to alleviate the pressure of care at Can Misses Hospital, allowing for better management of acute beds. According to estimates of the Health Area, it is expected to avoid more than 5,100 hospital stays and significantly reduce readmissions thanks to the specialized care and rehabilitation offered at this center. In addition, the resource is also designed to guarantee care for patients with advanced chronic diseases and palliative needs, especially those who cannot be cared for at home.
Facilities and opening phases
Located in a renovated space of almost 2,000 square meters, the center has been equipped with new facilities, including a gymnasium, occupational therapy and physiotherapy offices. The opening will be carried out in two phases: 15 single rooms are currently operational, while the second phase, which includes the fitting out of another 15 rooms on the upper floor, is scheduled for the spring of 2025. The Councilor for Health stressed that this center represents “the most decisive commitment to chronicity in the Pitiusas Islands in recent years”. She stressed that Ca na Majora will mark a before and after in health care, making it possible to bring forward the recovery of serious processes, such as stroke, thanks to the comprehensive rehabilitation offered in this space. Currently, two patients are already hospitalized at the center and it is expected that new patients will be admitted progressively.
