The Government of the Balearic Islands will pay 60,000 euros to the Consell Insular de Formentera to co-finance investments aimed at improving waste management on the island. The agreement, signed Tuesday by the Consell’s president, Llorenç Cordoba, and the Govern’s vice president, Antoni Costa, involves a commitment to finance 40% of the cost of Formentera’s clean point, a key infrastructure under the Sectoral Waste Master Plan. The financing is part of the Protocol of Intentions signed in 2007 between the Balearic Government and the councils of Ibiza and Formentera, which established commitments for the development of infrastructure such as the landfill of Can Na Putxa, waste transfer stations and organic matter treatment plants in the Pitiusas. However, as Costa acknowledged, this agreement comes to “settle a historical debt with the Consell de Formentera”, stressing that the agreed amount will be disbursed during 2024. For his part, Cordoba thanked the Govern for its willingness to meet the island’s needs and valued the positive impact this investment will have on sustainable waste management. “This agreement is a sign of commitment to the citizens of Formentera,” said the island president.
A boost to sustainability in Formentera
Formentera’s clean point is a key element in the island’s waste management plan, designed to optimize the classification, transfer and treatment of waste in a sustainable manner. With this contribution, the aim is not only to improve operations, but also to advance in the objectives of sustainability and environmental protection in a particularly sensitive island environment. The investment is in addition to other efforts in the Pitiusas to ensure more efficient waste management and minimize environmental impact, in line with the provisions of Decree Law 3/2024 on administrative rationalization measures.
