Road safety in Ibiza is once again in the spotlight, as three of its main roads have been main roads, the EI-600, EI-700 and EI-900EI-600, EI-700 and EI-900, have registered more than 120 accidents during 2024. According to data collected by the site Informesmecanicos.es, these roads concentrate a high percentage of accidents due to their high traffic density, dangerous curves and, in some sections, lack of maintenance.
Critical areas and risk factors
The EI-600, which connects Santa EulĆ ria with Sant Carles, leads the list with 40% of the registered accidents. This stretch, characterized by its narrowness and sharp curves, is especially conflictive during the high season, when the flow of tourists and vehicles increases exponentially. The EI-700, known as the Sant Josep road, is in second place. The lack of lighting in some sections and speeding contribute to frequent incidents on this road that crosses rural and tourist areas. Finally, the EI-900, which links Ibiza with Sant Antoni, has been singled out by experts as a “black spot” due to heavy traffic, especially at night, and the risks associated with alcohol and drug consumption in the area.
Factors
Road safety experts attribute this increase to several factors, including the increase in vehicles during the high season, distracted driving, and speeding on poorly marked stretches of road. Although no official figures of injuries or fatalities have been reported, the incidence of accidents has put the local community on alert. The island authorities, in collaboration with transport associations, have insisted on the importance of respecting speed limits, avoiding distractions and, above all, reinforcing road safety education. However, it is expected that the official year-end figures will prompt additional measures to address this problem. Road accidents remain one of the most urgent challenges for Ibiza’s road network, especially in a context where safety must go hand in hand with the constant increase in traffic on the island.
