The response of the PP of the Balearic Islands to the Vox’s ordago by conditioning its support to the budgets of the Government for 2025 to eliminate Catalan as a vehicular language in education, which the Popular Party considers a red line, is the party’s unwavering support for Marga Prohens to call early elections to which the party would arrive in an excellent state of health, since it handles surveys that draw an ascending line in voting intentions that could translate into an absolute majority. Quite the opposite of Vox, a party that has been bleeding to death due to internal crises since the beginning of the legislature and that does not seem to be in a position to repeat the excellent result of May 2023.
The president of the Balearic Government and of the Popular Party of the Balearic Islands, Marga Prohensgathered this Sunday in a bar in Campos, her hometown, the mayors and municipal leaders of the Popular Party (PP) of Mallorca to agree on a position before the blocking of the autonomic budgets of 2025 by Vox, a party that broke the legislature pact following the instructions of Santiago Abascal. During the meeting, marked by a tone of indignation towards Vox, the attendees unanimously supported the firmness of Prohens and endorsed an electoral advance.
Support for Marga Prohens
The support for Prohens includes mayors who govern together with Vox in municipalities such as Palma, Marratxí and Calvià, although they recognize that the relationship with the ultra-right is, in many cases, conflictive. In a message released after the meeting, Prohens declared: “We are the first force in the Balearic Islands […] and we will not move”. According to party sources confirmed to La Voz de Ibiza, the leaders of Ibiza could not join the meeting due to the lack of seats on flights to Mallorca on a Sunday at the end of the long weekend and with numerous sports teams traveling between the islands.
Extortion by Vox
The political crisis with Vox focuses on demands such as eliminating Catalan as a vehicular language in education, a sine qua non condition for approving the accounts. Popular mayors consider these demands an “extortion” and advocate prioritizing the principles of the party. “We cannot go backwards”, was one of the most repeated slogans, according to the Mallorcan media. Prohens, who has such favorable internal polls that some media place them in absolute majority and others very close, raised the possibility of early elections as a way out, although she left open the door to negotiations with the left opposition to save the legislature. The president emphasized that she will not give in on key issues such as language policy, one of the red lines that her party seeks to preserve. The next litmus test for the Govern will be on Tuesday, when the Parliament debates the repeal of the Law of Democratic Memory, an issue that could mark the course of the negotiations and define whether the PP chooses to exhaust the political routes or to call the polls.
