The Consell de Ibiza has given the green light to the project to improve road safety on the road that crosses Sant Francesc de ses Salines, a road that connects with the Natural Park of ses Salines and that registers a significant increase in traffic during the summer months. With an execution budget of 200,000 euros, this intervention seeks to meet the demands of neighbors in view of the accident problems recorded in the area.
Planned road safety measures
Among the actions included in the project are the creation of a pedestrian route, the installation of a raised crosswalk, the narrowing of the roadway to limit speed, improvements in lighting and new bus stops.
As explained by the Councilor for Road Infrastructure, Mariano Juan, these measures seek to mitigate the risks in a stretch with intense vehicular activity, especially due to its proximity to beaches and tourist establishments. The councilor also recalled that, previously, the Consell requested the installation of a radar to the DGT, operational during last summer, as a temporary measure to reduce speed while the final project was approved.
Processing in a protected environment
The project has required the approval of several agencies due to the location of the road in an environment of high environmental and heritage value. These include the Coastal Demarcation of the Balearic Islands, the Insular Commission for Territorial Planning, Urban Planning and Historic-Artistic Heritage (CIOTUPHA) and the General Directorate of Natural Spaces and Biodiversity. According to Juan, this process has added to the complexity of the process, even though it is a small-scale project.
A project as part of a broader plan of action
The intervention in Sant Francesc de ses Salines is part of a series of projects planned by the Consell for the road network of the municipality of Sant Josep. Other actions include the east traffic circle access to Sant Josep and the asphalting of the road to Es Cubells, the latter already executed. Juan has pointed out that the Consell is confident that the works in Sant Francesc will be put out to tender and begin this year.
