The tranquility of Formentera was interrupted last night with an incident that culminated in the arrest of a 26 year old man of North African origin. The man is accused of serious resistance and crimes against road safety. The incident began in the village of Sant Ferran de Ses Roques, when several citizens alerted the Guardia Civil that an individual was hitting vehicles near the traffic circle that connects to Es Pujols. Upon receiving the alert, the agents quickly moved to the area, but by then the suspect had left the place in a vehicle.
Dangerous pursuit
The agents began a patrol in the vicinity and located the suspect’s vehicle on San Jaime street. Despite the Civil Guard’s sound and light signals, the driver ignored the indications and accelerated, fleeing at high speed. During the pursuit, he made dangerous maneuvers that endangered the safety of other road users. Finally, the agents managed to block the vehicle, but the driver refused to turn off the engine and abandon the car, trying again to escape. One of the civil guards had to quickly move aside to avoid being rammed.
Arrest and charges
The situation was resolved when an agent accessed the interior of the car, disconnected the engine and extracted the driver to immobilize him. Upon identification, they found that the detainee did not have a driver’s license, which added a new charge to the crimes already committed. The man was arrested and faces charges of serious resistance, disobedience and a crime against Road Safety. According to the authorities, the case has been handed over to the Court of Instruction of Formentera to proceed with the corresponding investigations.
