The Second Section of the Provincial Court of the Balearic Islands has started this Monday the trial against the 12 accused of belonging to a gang dedicated to large-scale drug trafficking that introduced and distributed drugs in Mallorca and Ibiza and transported them to Miami. Three of the defendants have admitted to being the authors of the facts.
In its indictment, the Public Prosecutor’s Office requests sentences for the defendants totaling 95 years in prison and fines of 13.7 million euros. During the trial, which began on Monday and will continue throughout the week, the other defendants in the case have denied the facts. The accused of being the right-hand man of the alleged leader of the gang and of collaborating in the transfer of drugs to the United States has assured that he “knew nothing” about the people who traveled to Miami transporting drugs. He explained that he organized the trips because the alleged leader asked him for“favors” without knowing the purpose of the trips. Another defendant in the case, accused of coordinating the reception and shipment of drug shipments to the United States and assisting the people who traveled with the drugs, said that he worked as a driver and accompanied people to the airport, but that “at no time” did he know what was in the suitcases.
