The director of the Patronato Municipal de Música de Ibiza, Iván Mérgola Gómez, died this Tuesday at the age of 48, victim of a recently diagnosed illness. Mérgola leaves behind an important legacy in the musical education of the islands, where he stood out for his work in the expansion of facilities and his contribution to music education in Ibiza and Formentera.
A life dedicated to music in the Pitiusas islands
Mérgola, who developed his career between Ibiza and Formentera, was responsible for the creation of the Municipal School of Music and Dance in Formentera in 1999 and the extension of the Catalina Bufí Conservatory in 2002.
His commitment allowed many students to develop their musical careers without having to leave the island, cementing an educational base that endures to this day. During his time as director of the Patronato Municipal de Música de Ibiza, he worked tirelessly to expand the facilities and increase both the number of students and the educational offer, consolidating the institution as a fundamental pillar of musical education in the Pitiusas.
Expressions of condolences and tributes
The Consell de Formentera and the Ibiza Town Council have expressed their sorrow for the loss of Mérgola. In a statement, the Consell expressed its “most sincere condolences” and recognized the “great mark” that Mérgola left on the island, highlighting his role as a promoter of music education. As a sign of mourning, the School of Music and Dance of Formentera suspended all classes on Tuesday. For its part, the Ibiza Town Hall deeply regretted his passing and also suspended classes scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday in the sections of the Patronato. The director of the City of Ibiza Symphonic Band, Miguel Ángel Aguiló, confirmed that the tribute concert to Rocío Jurado, scheduled for this Sunday at Can Ventosa, will include a recognition of the figure of Mérgola as part of the program, in an emotional tribute to her memory.
An irreplaceable void
The loss of Iván Mérgola leaves a void in the cultural sphere of the Pitiusas, where his work and dedication marked a before and after in music education. Both his colleagues and his students and the musical community remember with affection and gratitude to the man who dedicated his life to promote musical talent in the islands.
