The Consell de Formentera has reaffirmed that public transport on the island will remain free in 2025, maintaining the bonuses implemented in 2024. These include free travel for residents, children under 18, people with disabilities or dependents and their companions, in addition to non-resident workers, who must process an identification card through the OAC or OVAC to access the benefit.
Context of public transport in Formentera
The announcement comes at a time when free public transport in the Balearic Islands has been the subject of national debate after the fall of the omnibus decree. However, both the Balearic Government and the Consell de Formentera have guaranteed that this measure will remain in force within their respective competences. In Formentera, this policy is directly linked to the Formentera.eco project, which aims to limit the environmental impact of vehicle circulation and promote sustainable mobility on the island. From the Conselleria de Mobilitat, they have committed to introduce additional improvements in the public transport system this year. Among the measures planned is the optimization of routes and frequencies to ensure a more efficient and attractive service for both residents and tourists.
A notable increase in the use of transportation
Bus service in Formentera experienced a notable increase of 10.9% in 2024, from 283,424 users in 2023 to 314,394 last year. This growth is attributed to the bonuses applied and the improvement of the service during the low season, when the regular service was unified into a single line connecting the main urban centers, offering greater daily frequency. Currently, the service operates with 60-minute frequencies from Monday to Friday and Saturday mornings, while in the afternoons, Sundays and holidays, frequencies are every two hours.
