The man who suffered serious injuries during a building fire this morning in the municipality of Santa Eulària has been transferred to the Burn Unit of the Hospital La Paz in Madrid.
This has been confirmed by the Health Area of the Pitiusas, which also clarified that the victim is 38 years old and not 45 as had been reported at first. “He is in critical condition“, they explained.
The victim was sleeping and alone when the fire broke out in a room next to the balcony of the apartment.
The incident, which occurred around 6:30 a.m., forced the eviction of between 30 and 40 people living in the affected block located at 29 des Riu street.
In addition to the seriously injured, about twenty people, including 18 neighbors and two Guardia Civil officers, were treated by the medical team for smoke inhalation.
The evacuation protocol was quickly activated in the building due to the fire alert. A neighbor reported this morning that “I got up, went out to the first floor, to the garden, looked up and saw fire on the top floor. We could already hear people coming down the stairs. The police were already on the street and the fire department arrived immediately”.
For his part, the Chief of the Firefighter Insular Park, Miguel Sevilla, explained that “there was a lot of fire and heat load in the house. Some areas of the house have been more affected and others less. But the room has been completely destroyed”.
Extinguishing the flames, according to Sevilla, “has been complicated”. In addition, the water used to extinguish the flames “leaked downwards. Pipes have been broken and the house below has been flooded“.
