The zoo Can Dog, located in the municipality of Sant Joan de Labritja, is no longer authorized to operate as a kennel or as a regulated center for animals. This was confirmed by the Consell Insular de Ibiza after several months of inspections that began in June and resulted in the opening of a file for alleged violations of animal welfare and health.
During October and November, the veterinary services made several follow-up visits. In the first of these, on October 15, 41 dogs were counted on the premises: 30 were not registered in the name of the owner of the center or of personnel linked to the facility. The report concluded that the non-compliances persisted, which prevented the continuity of the activity as a kennel.
Following this inspection, on October 17, Can Dog was notified that it had been removed from the register of zoos, in addition to precautionary measures prohibiting the entry of new animals on a boarding regime. Can Dog was given seven days to present a plan to return the dogs to their owners.
On October 28, during a new check, 38 dogs were found , 28 of them still in boarding. Those responsible for the establishment assured that they would continue to return them over the next 20 days. However, four dogs were detected whose owners had refused to pick them up, implying a possible situation of abandonment.
Inspections on November 21 and 26 confirmed the presence of 21 dogs, 11 of them owned by people outside the center. On the same day, November 21, the information was transferred to the City Council of Sant Joan so that they could act against the cases of abandonment. The Local Police removed the four affected dogs and relocated them to the municipal animal protection center, subsequently managing to locate three of their owners.
On November 28, it was verified that seven dogs belonging to one person were still in the enclosure. Since the deadline for their removal had expired, their situation was also reported for the pertinent actions to be taken.
According to the Consell, once these last animals are relocated -something that the property has guaranteed to the Local Police-, in Can Dog there will be no more dogs linked to the residence activity or to a zoological nucleus. Only ten animals will remain: six belonging to the owner of the old establishment and four belonging to a worker who resides in the plot.
