The Emergency Service 112 of the Balearic Islands has launched an appeal to citizens to exercise extreme caution during the Christmas celebrations, due to the risk of drowning in children and the elderly, especially related to food intake and the use of small toys.
In a message posted on its official account on the social network X, the 112 has warned that during these dates choking episodes increase, mainly during family meals. For this reason, they recommend eating always seated, slowly and with special care when consuming nuts, olives and hard candies.
In the case of children, the emergency service insists that New Year’s grapes should be peeled and cut, in order to reduce the risk of choking. They also remind that these incidents can also occur when children handle toys with small parts, so they ask adults to be constantly vigilant.
Emergencies 112 has also taken advantage of the message to remind other usual recommendations in these dates, such as the prohibition of driving under the influence of alcohol. In this sense, they advise to plan the trips in advance or to designate a responsible driver.
In addition, the service has urged to properly ventilate indoor rooms where stoves or braziers are used and has warned that they should never be left on without supervision, to avoid domestic accidents.
